Wolf Creek Racing - Mikuni 40's

Just arrived from Wolf Creek Racing

Todd has done a fantastic job with this new addition to my car. I'm really stoked about getting these on and the car fired up. All soda blasted and ready to set the idle and sync. Pretty close to a plug and play install.

I'll be removing the current mechanical fuel pump and adding an electric one along with a pressure regulator to maintain fuel pressure at 3 +/- .5 PSI along with a heat shield and triple fuel rail.

The jetting setup is:
40mm Mikuni Carbs
32mm Venturis
40 Pump Jets
57.7 Pilot Jets
150 Main Fuel Jets
190 Air Connector Jets

Hometown elevation is 3200 feet

Very nice setup indeed. Is the heat shield and triple fuel rail also sourced from Wolf Creek ? What is the pricing level on the shield/rail if i may impolitely ask ?

Todd at Wolf Creek Racing could not get the heat shield or the fuel rail. I had to hook up with a guy from Japan to buy and ship it to me. There is a source for the heat shield but I could not find the 3 barb fuel rail anywhere in the states at all.

Heat Shield was a breeze to attach - very supportive and raised edge all the way around to add support to the vibration and heat. I am adding a heat barrier to the underside that reflects heat up to 2000 degree at 90% - gotta keep the fuel cool!

Those are sweet! Any guess on what kind of horsepower increase they will add?

From my understanding talking to Todd at Wolf Racing and Dave at Rebello's they should generate around 40 additional horsepower - my engine output should be close to 270 horsepower with the engine rebuild from last year and the head work from Rebello's. I could have pulled some more horsepower out of it but really no need since my intentions are not to track this car. A different intake manifold would have gotten my closer to 300hp. At some point I will dyno it but just so my plugs are looking good once I get the install done I'm really happy where I am currently. Next years project will be a 5 speed / r200 / upgraded half shafts.

Hopefully to have this finished up over the weekend - it should just take a couple of hours to get everything hooked up and sync'd.

Hopefully install will be finalized tomorrow evening - stay tuned for pictures............... Ended up using a Lokar Throttle Kit that is really much superior to the current linkage. The intake manifold ended up being pretty short and does not give much room to complete the install due to barely having enough room to bolt the intake on. Removed the current bolts and replace with shortened studs. Fuel pump mounted good - inertia switch with relay - fuel pressure regulator. Pressurized the system this evening and fuel lines leaked using the original Datsun fuel clamps. Moving to EFI clamps and may have to change to standard fuel lines instead of the braided fuel line from Canada.

Are those meshy covers on the air horns just protective covers, or are they actually filters?

So, what was done to the motor to get it up to 270HP? Which block did you start with?

Wow!! I've heard my SU's for the past several years - I heard the sound of Mikuni's tonight!!

FANTASTIC is all I can say!!

If you have thought about it.......do it!! Finalizing timing - idle and air tomorrow...........I'm really fired up!! I had to go back to regular fuel line instead of the black braided - a lot of fuel line leaks - correct pressure at 3psi.

Marty - Yes - the air horns do have actual filters on them - I would not want to drive on a dirt or gravel road - nor do I plan on it. Check out my garage - the engine is detailed there........N42 Block

Just wanted to catch everybody up on this install

Power band and torque is fantastic - no real heavy fuel smell as I have heard in the past with triples - sound is excellent - fairly quiet until you get on it and then that beautiful sound of air and exhaust. Highly recommended for anybody that is looking to grab some more HP and Torque out of their engine. Much more power than the SU's had but this is a step up from SU's and should have more power IMO.

I'll have to get in touch with my guy in Japan and see if I can get him to order any more - Let me check with him and I'll let you know. If he doesn't want to mess with it again the price really doesn't matter.

These carbs bring the entire rebuilt engine to life. The sound of the climbing RPM's and the de-acceleration is fantastic!!........head and cam work makeup part of all that along with the headers and exhaust system.

3 of my plugs were a little on the phat side so I backed off the setting just a little - I'll run 100 miles or so and then re-read all 6. I guess on the initial set up some of my setting were off a 1/4 turn or so.

Fuel consumption is all based on your right foot......;)

Very, nice and well spent I am sure, cant wait to upgrade my crappy carb set up.

Every 100 miles I roll I am pulling plugs and reading - tweaking each cylinder fuel setting to get the nice light tan/grayish top of the plug. The beautiful thing about these is there is a setting for each plug - they are dead on or not - once your plug is reading correctly you are done.

She is a absolute thrill to drive every time I start the ignition!! She gets a lot of nods and grins at car shows as well. I've had several people ask me to fire her up just so they can hear the Mikuni triples and the air flow...........you gotta love it!

Thanks for posting all the details regarding jet and air corrector sizes Mitchell! I've got a Rebello 3.1 Stroker that was tuned for autocross so it appears the mixture is set for the top end. As a result, the plugs are very black and sooty. I am going to adjust the jets and air corrector jets once my car is off the rotisserie, so your post is a good starting point.

Beautiful set-up and congrats. I have set of 40's sitting on a shelf waiting to go on!! I am trying to be patient and doing all my tuning with my SU's, but I truly believe the SU's in stock form do not breathe enough air for a modified air-simple in air-out air physics. Yes SU's can supply plenty of fuel(based on my wideband), but not enough CFM.
I would strongly recommend a wideband for realtime readings instead of reading plugs. It will be much easier for you to tune and you might be suprised how rich or lean you really are.
I am waiting to finish my cold air box before installing mine. I am trying to concentrate on eliminating the fuel rail next to the valve cover and having cold air into these carbs.
Now we need a good in-car video of your car so we can hear them babies sucking air!!

I used a currency converter to get an idea of what a heat shield would cost. I have a set of OER 47MM that will eventually be installed on Project 3/72. The heat shield cost 5500 yen, approx $70.00. The shipping cost to North America ranges between 9600 yen and 25800 yen. 25800 yen is roughly $331.00. If you use a median shipping price you can expect to pay approx $205.00 for shipping to North America for a heat shield. F#%@&^K

Not sure how you came up with your shipping cost, but when I made my purchase of the heat shield along with the fuel rail shipping was $35.00.

have you noticed any difference in your power braking? I am considering a vacuum log for my Mikunis to connect all the ports to increase vacuum for my booster.
Also, I have been making my heat sheild myself and noticed the accelerator pump linkage has a long throw and I actually had to punch holes in my sheild to allow for travel. Looking at your sheild i am suprised you have enough clearance for full travel of the pump linkages.

No problems on either end - my angle is great with no interference at all.

I designed a balance or vaccuum tube for my Mikuni manifold. It was fabricated by a machine shop that specialize in race car parts.

Hi, I would love to come and see your set up, I use to live in Johnson city, Tn and now live in Nasville, Tn I am in Johnson city a lot and could come up to see your 240Z. I have a 71 240z I have been working on with a Rebello engine installed with SU CARBS I have been thinking about the Mikuni or webers.
