I think this is '50's or '60's and not Datsun but it serves as a reminder to keep your safety equipment serviceable... YIKES!!!

That picture is from the Goodwood Revival in England from a few years ago. The guy was OK but beat up a bit. I was at Goodwood for this year's Revival and it was amazing. Those guys drive 100% in multi-million dollar equipment.

In one race the drivers included Bobby Rahal, Derick Bell, Jackie Oliver, Richard Attwood(I think) amongst other greats.

Whilst you were at the 2010 Goodwood Revival Meeting, did you venture into the 'Earls Court Motor Show' building?

Kevin Bristow's works 1971 RAC Rally 240Z was on display, and my KPGC10 Skyline GT-R was next to it. Our cars were guests on the Nissan show stand:

Alan, a little dry English wit! I like it!!

Good to see a Nissan presence at Goodwood, Amelia Island and Monterey in 2010.

Could Nissan be embracing their past??

Here is a map of the original Watkins Glen Course. Just for giggles I embedded a YouTube video of a guy I know driving it in a rental car. He buries the needle at least three times. He is a decendent of Colin Chapman and has been a pro driver so 'don't try this at home - yada yada yada'

    Default Old Course

I was at the Townsend road corner this September during the vintage race week (we were late coming down from The Glen on our way to the Seneca Lodge). My vids won't upload for some reason but they still run the old course each year with selected cars, including the winner of the first race in 1948, a pre-war Alfa.

No Zs ran the old course but 2 were racing at the track and looked very good out there.

I've attached a pic one of the 240s and two pics of the Repco Brabham BT30 I had the pleasure to move around in the pits and garage area. That car is over in Australia right now being prepped for the Tasman Revival. Sir Brabham will be attending.

    Gnosez,
That's my Z. Nice meeting you at the races. I've driven the old course a couple of times with the race car. It's a bit hard on the car because I have no fan, racing clutch/tranny etc. I needed to save my clutch for the weekend this year so I skipped it. This is a great vintage race event that the town embraces and I highly recommend it for drivers or spectators. Datsun is the featured marque for 2011 so put it on your calendars. There should be some special Datsun race cars showing up for the event.

    Default Newman/BSR??

Does anyone know the history behind this particular 300ZX race car?

UPDATE: Found history in SCCA archives. Ran well in qualifying, not so in the actual races itself (gearbox, engine, etc.). Only ran in 1988 and no mention in any races in '89. Interesting NA induction however.

Car seems to be up for sale.

I wanted to add a few of the pics from my collection and hopefully clear up a few of the statements and issues that were debated in this thread earlier...

I own the HLS30-00008 car that has been a race car nearly all its life after being one of the three original factory show cars.

A very early pic of the car...

and a few more early pics....

I purchased the car in 1991 after it had recently run in the 1990 24 hours of Daytona (similar to previously posted pics but in very sad shape).

In contrast to previously stated in this thread it was not cut up into a tube frame car and was still very much a tub based car...

The restoration was extensive and the car was taken back to C-production specs as seen here....

And a finally a very proud moment for me and the car....

If you are talking about the 70's photos of the C production version of the car I beleive they were from Lime Rock and Watkins Glen but not 100% sure. They are copies of photos I received from the original owner's wife.

Vintageracer, Have you remaind in touch with the PO's (Racers Cafe crew), I have been trying to get in touch with one of the drivers of the car from the 1990 race, David Duda. We were "drinking buddies" back then, and I was trying to find out if he still was lugging around parts for the old Z's. I know he left Parkville years ago, but I've had no luck trying to contact him.

No, unfortunately I haven't been in touch with Dave in quite a while. I did hear he moved out of the area and since that time haven't heard from him. I know he was friends with Mike Speakman, is he still around in the Balt. area? He might know the whereabouts of Dave....

BTW, if you do find him let me know....have a few questions too!

Vintagezracer - the '87 300ZX NA race car is a stand-alone car for sale and was not part of the Bob Sharp collection sold in the late '90s. This car was a Newman-Sharp car instead.

Sorta vintage - me at an autocross with my brother in the 90s before the flares. Those are 15x8 Wheel Specialties 7 spoke wheels like on the 27 CP car of vintagezracer. At least I think that was the company name. They are 2 piece glued together with "space glue" is how it was explained to me. The centers are thick and require long studs.

    www.symbolicinternational.com and for better pictures:

    http://www.autoblog.com/photos/paul-...cecar/#3157147

Should, might, could be the last Nissan Newman drove. There is another 300ZX NA car, an '88 that I believe Scott Sharp drove with more with luck and that is for sale as well.

Look up the '88 SCCA archives and you can see the places the '87 raced and the results.

Paul kept this car and had it for more than a decade after it stopped racing is my understanding based on a conversation I had with Bob Sharp last night.

Found both the '87 and the '88 cars. Can't remember where but I thought I saw somewhere the asking price was around $325,000 for PLN's '87 car??
If I'm not mistaken this car was sold back to PLN by the owner of SVRA (P.Mc.) after he purchased a group of cars from Bob Sharp? Might be confusing it with another car though??
BTW, how is Bob doing these days? Haven't seen him since around 2000/2001 when we last ran our Z in SVRA....

Default SVRA Z & BSR pics

Here are a few more pics of DatsunDocs nice 240 at vintage week held at The Glen and a few of the 240 tribute car Bob Sharp bought last year.

Trivia question: Who replaced Tom Cruise in the 300ZX showroom stock car?

Here are some of Jim Fitzgerald 240z Serial #6 but was campaigned later as a 280 due to engine changes. Also the Bob Sharp 280zx turbo. Jim was Paul Newman's team mate and good friend. Newman was number 33, Jim was 38.
robbed these off the internet hope they don't mind.

Vintage racing from Japan. No Zs but some nice Skyline action and the music can't be beat.

    Default BSR Update

Update: 300ZXT sold to a buyer in CA, 280ZXTT will be at vintage race week at The Glen in September. Some pics of the spare parts.

Bob Sharp is doing well (as of a few months ago when I had dinner with him). He bought a nice replica of his 240/260/280 race car and should be out with it this season at vintage events in the New England area.

I expect both the Tom Cruise 300ZX SSA car and the 280ZXTT to be offered up for sale after the Glen event this fall (Datsun/Nissan to be featured cars).

Both of these cars were at ZCON 2010 and I hope to get Peter's permission to make them available for the 2011 event.

    Scott Sharp’s Paul Newman Memories

Scott Sharp has fond memories of Lime Rock Park, and rightfully so, as the Norwalk, Conn.-native literally grew up at the historic Northeast circuit. Watching his Dad’s Bob Sharp Racing team compete in SCCA national events as a youngster, Sharp got the racing bug early in life.

    Paul Newman's 1979 Datsun 280ZX. (LAT)
At 17, Sharp began taking part in Tuesday test sessions at Lime Rock in his Dad’s SCCA national championship-winning Datsun 240Z. And once Scott began competing in races the following year, it didn’t take long for him to reach success.

“It actually sat in our basement for years,” Sharp said of the 240Z, which at the time was 17 years old. “I used to hang around it all the time, opening the doors, and showing it off to my friends. Then, my Dad’s team did a little bit of an update to it, and I started driving it. The first year driving it, I won my first SCCA national championship.”

Sharp’s maiden title in 1986 was his first of three consecutive national championships, in the midst of the glory years of SCCA GT1 and GT2 competition. While Scott was working up the ladder, he not only looked up to his Dad, but also to a Hollywood legend who also was a quick shoe on the track.

Paul Newman began racing for BSR in the late ‘70s and was a fixture with the team for over a decade. In fact, Bob Sharp Racing became known as Newman Sharp Racing in the ‘80s, when the young Sharp was racking up the wins and national championships.

“I still have a lot of great memories of Paul,” Scott said. “The guy was so personable and a lot of fun to be with. He always had a fun time no matter what he did. If you were with him you of course had a good time as well.”

Sharp and Newman drove together as teammates in Trans-Am in 1989 and 1990 and also raced a handful of times in GT1 and GT2 competition. But most of Sharp’s memories of Newman came right at their home track at Lime Rock, putting around during open test sessions.

“I remember one time we were up there in a regular production Nissan with a roll-cage in it with thin little shaved tires,” Scott explained. “We were out, and it was raining! We were trying to get tuned up for the end-of-year Runoffs at Road Atlanta. Paul said, ‘Hey let’s go take this car out.’ It then started pouring.

“I went out and came down the hill and did three 360’ spins. I ran off into the mud, luckily didn’t hit the wall and had enough of it. I pulled into the pits and Paul decided to take it out.

Paul Newman competed in a variety of different racing series, but enjoyed most of his success in SCCA with Bob Sharp Racing. (LAT)
“So he gets in and I’m in the passenger seat, and he’s just hauling. I’m like, ‘wow!’ We went down the back straightaway and he just blows by the braking point that I had. All of a sudden, the car doesn’t turn, then boom! He pancakes the thing.

“Laughing our butts off, we drive back to the pits with a totaled car. He was just laughing as he gave the key back to my Dad. We were all standing there stunned, but Paul was just having a good time. That was a great memory.”

Newman, who earned four national titles over the span of a decade, helped mentor drivers like Scott, who were at the time just getting into the sport. He provided a lot of advice, mainly since he had raced many of the cars before, such as the 240Z and 280Z.

“One thing about Paul is that he was a very smooth driver,” Scott said. “To think that he didn’t start racing until he was 42 or 43 years old is amazing. As quick as he got, particularly when he was in his 60’s, was pretty amazing. If he could have backed that up 20 years, he could have gone very, very far in racing.”

Like the Sharp family, Lime Rock Park was Newman’s home track, and his memories will live on for generations to come.

This is pretty cool... Lots of Datsuns and even a 914 or two. Anyone recognize the track or care to venture a guess as to the race?

Look again. It's the esses at Road Atlanta, the Runoffs around 1977. But yes, definitely a classic.

My guess is Sharp and Fitzgerald on the front row, the yellow z, third row, is Logan Blackburn - there's been some discussion this is the blue BRE Z which the Mason's now own. The Silver/red #17 Z driver has a last name of Carpenter IIRC, he's been in some Blackhawk Farms pictures which I posted towards the beginning of this thread.

And agreed Larry, definitely Road Atlanta, runoffs.

Hi Phil, your assumption is not quite correct. The Blue and white car in front of Logan is Dan Parkinson's 280Z #5 which is not a BRE car. The Logan blackburn car shown might be the BRE 3 car, but I am not sure. Dan had the #46 car but wrecked it prior to this photo, this shows Dan's later car that he built out of the salvagable pieces of the 46 car.

Actually you've confirmed what I said, they Yellow (now returned to blue trim) is the Blackburn/ex-BRE car, and thanks, I had a brain fart, couldn't remember Parkinson was in the blue one behind sharp

Oh, okay...The Blackburn car would have been the former Jim Gammon car which was the #3 BRE 240Z.

Barely poking into the picture on the right in the third row is the white 280 of Frank Leary. He is running the mags that I occasionally will run on my car for vintage events. He went on to win the runoffs in 1978 with that car using bigger and better wheels.

Nice job identifying the track and suspects on that last pic... This one might be a bit more difficult. At least on the track. The car and driver should be obvious.

The Z on Ebay is not the Electramotive car. It belongs to Mike Murphy and it was at the SVRA Vintage races at the Glen Sept 11. He won the All Datsun race. In the Runoffs picture above the Z on the 5th row (white and red hood) is Bob Leitzinger in his 1975 280Z. Bob was also at the Glen Sept 11th racing his Datsun 510 and Lotus Elan.

Very cool car, I saw it in person at Road America back in the late 90's when Dave Dutko owned it. Had the pleasure watching him battle it out with an uber-expensive rear/mid engined Jaguar prototype car. They swapped the lead every lap, in the end the Jaguar came out on top but not by much. It's also THE car the molds were taken off which John Washington sells at reactionresearch.com

    E-Jag magazine reported.....

"The powerful Jaguar leads the dash for the first corner, a sweeping right turn leading uphill. The Datsuns are able to brake a bit later so it's a dead heat into the turn, Freddy surrounded by Z's"....."The Jaguar thunders down the pit straight, the leader after the first lap."

In pole position, the XK-E won the race against all odds, even after being deliberately battered by Jim Fitzgeralds Datsun at the very beginning of the race! The Road Atlanta SCCA Road Racing National Championship win on 26th October 1980 ended 9 years of Datsun domination of the title!

Not a vintage photograph, but a photo showing some of the great vintage Zs that showed up at the Glen in September can be seen here:

Here is a shot that hasn't seen the light of day in years. Bay area friend got his neighbor who was a race fan and amateur photographer in the '70s to scan this and put it on a disc for me... It's either the old Riverside or Laguna Seca.

We talked about that here a few years ago:

A bit biased like most of the stuff out there, "against all odds" is a stretch. It was actually the '80 runoffs, but no biggie. An entertaining read nonetheless.

I did find the entire race posted online but am having difficulty locating it at the moment. My favorite quote by the late Mr. Newman on his finish "second overall, first in class"

    Hi Rob:
Yes - that was at the Lake Mirror Classic Concours - in Lakeland, Florida a couple months ago. It is a wonderful event, it was a perfect day and lots of really neat Classic / Collectible and Special Interest Cars there. There were about 125 Cars invited to the Concours Event which is held around Lake Mirror; and several hundred Classic/Collectible and Special Interest cars on display throughout the downtown area.

Perhaps one of the best organized and operated events I've been to in recent years. Seems that everyone in town was involved and volunteering to help. Even the Police Department.

Yes - looks like someone put the Display Sign on the car while I was out looking at the rest of the field - the signs kept blowing over... Someone else must have moved it back to the ground before I returned.

    FWIW,
    Carl B.

This is probably another from the same event. The guy I got the picture from is a nephew of Colin Chapman and a major Porsche 914 guy. I believe he is restoring a factory GT 914 of which there were 49 documented and owns another 914 6 as well... I will ask him to introduce himself next time he sees your car. His name is TC Carr and he lives in Florida too...

I'm puzzled by the statement that the Jag's 4.2L E-type beat out the Datsun 400+ HP turbo'd 280ZXs?? Those weren't turbo cars as far I know. So the 4.2L Jag beat a 2.8L Datsun, hmmm.

Try: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6CIJ-6pPmpY for a look at the 1980 runoff itself which includes the TR8 crash (ugly but no one was hurt).

been wanting to post some comments and photos for this thread and I finally have something to add. 2 famous Z cars that have not been out for close to 10 years just came out of hiding and were at an event at Laguna Seca last thur and fri being invited to a private event. Both cars showed up and both did well and it was great to see the Brad Friselle IMSA GTU car and Fitzy's 280ZX C-prod and IMSA GTU car(see above posts) and even thought the Fitzy car is now in the same paint job as the Electramotive and Logan Blackburn cars in the photo above it is the Designated Hitter car as I am now prone to calling it. Both car are on track to race 3-4 races this year including Monterey and possibly Sonoma. If I can figure out how to add some photos I will.

    LOGAN BLACKBURN Indianapolis, IN

Logan won the 1971 SCCA E-Production National Championship driving an MG-B...and followed that up with C-Production Championship in 1977, driving a Nissan Z-Car.

This is the guy that let the JAG 4.2L on the track with the 2.8L DATSUN.

Worked as a designer for Martin Aircraft. Hired by SCCA in 1956 to run its Contest Board and conceived and implemented classifying race cars by their potential, not just by their displacement. Became Executive Director of SCCA in 1962 and focused on burgeoning professional racing interest. First created the U. S. Road Racing Championship series, followed by Can-Am, Trans-Am and Formula 5000 series. Meanwhile, revamped SCCA’s Club Racing program to determine a National Champion in every class, an effort which resulted in the existence of the Runoffs. Created the International Motor Sports Association, drew up rules for a GT category and signed R. J. Reynolds as the sponsor for the new Camel GT. Sold IMSA in 1989, retiring to an aviation ranch community where he has built an aerobatic biplane which he flies regularly, plus flying two other planes. Remains active in road racing as a director of ACCUS FIA, a commissioner of NASCAR, and a commissioner of the Grand-American Road Racing Association. Also a founder and chairman of the

International Motor Racing Research Center at Watkins Glen.

Yes, that's true, but there's something more significant (other then Uncle Rico's van parked on the access road left of center). You would have to be a west coast racer to notice the significance.
