Default I need everyones input on this one (Combo and T/S switches)

I hope to make this a Sticky (Mike!!) I want to Document every S30 style combo and Turn Signal Switch. I need every one to see what is already posted and add to this Thread if you don't see your style of switches. With any luck, anyone can pick up a switch out of a box of parts and be able to cross reference it here and know exactly what they have.

I am now in possesion of over 80+ switches that I would like to start rebuilding for people and customers. Only problem is that there are so many styles that I am not totally sure of what is what. So PLEASE remove 4 screws from the steering column cover, take off the top and bottom covers and.........

    Take a picture of....
1 of the top (looking from the roof down at the switches)
2 of the bottom (show the length of the T/S switch pigtail and the wires going into the T/S switch and the wiper switch.

Try to show as much detail as possible that makes your switch different from the others listed.

Make sure to STATE YOUR BUILD DATE!!! So everything can be properly documented.

    Thanks to all who participate.
    Dave.

The pictures below are of my 8/70 and the combo switch and T/S switch wires are clearly visable as are the connectors. large 6-pin on the combo and small 6-pin connector on a short pigtail of the T/S. and a 6 wire T/S box.

That's perfect Mat, is there a double black wire (1 small and 1 large) on the top of the headlight switch? And does the small black wire from the wiper switch go to the top of the headlight switch?

Thanks and keep 'em coming guys, the more, the marrier.

    Here's another ....

    2/73 240Z

3 position wiper and usual everything else, long pigtail on Turn signal switch.
Also, I believe the combo switch sits on an upper angle (due to the 3 position wiper switch) as compared to the earlier 240Z switches that sit in the center of the metal chassis.

Come on people. Take 5 minutes to go take a picture of your switches. I really need a picture of an 8/71 and a top view of the 1/71, MATT. But I still need some more input from every one who can add to this.

Let's fill this thing up. If you don't see your switches on here, ADD them.

    Thanks,
    Dave

Dave - Between the ones I sent you and the refurbished one you sent back, I can't be for sure on the build date(s) of any specific car(s) they came out of. However, they were all from 280Z's. Sorry I couldn't be more help. Taking a picture of what I (re)installed in the car is pointless, as I'm not sure the date of the original donor.

But from the picture, it doesn't look like I was the only one who donated to your "illness"......

    Wayne,
What is the build date of the Z that the refurbished switches work on. It almost doesn't matter what the donors came from but what the switches work on. So the build date and the needed pictures are NOT pointless, at this point. Everything will help get a clue on this thread.

So Pics and build date Please.

What is the build date of your switches pictured above me? I know you have or have owned a 71' and 72' and a 73'. But which ones which.

Thanks again to all who participate, The end result should be something that everyone will benefit from, at one time or another.

Dave: I named the photos with their build date. First two are 6-71, next two are 7-71 and last two are 5-73. I have one for a 4-72 but it is still on the column under a tarp and in the car full to the top with parts. Let me know if you need that one I can possibly crawl into the car and pull it out.

That's awesome Dan, I see it now, I just had to hold my curser over the picture for a second to see the date title. Thanks again, And I like I said, IF you're able to get that picture without too much hassle, then by all means, do. If not, don't sweat it, someone has to have a 4/72' they're willing to share with us.

Have you tried them on your Z yet? If they fit and everything works as it's supposed to and your Z is a 72' then that's what I need. What's the build date if they do fit and work?

    Thanks man,
    Dave.

    Default 72 switch

Dave: I had to get something out of the car, so I grabbed to switch. Here are a few photos of the 71,72 & 73 next to each other. The 71 & 72 look very much the same as far as the wiring and switches, you can see the different switch on the 73 as well as the connector. I did notice that the white icons and lettering on the controls is different for each year. Hope this helps.

I still need top and bottom views of an 8/71 set. Does the T/S switch have the long or short connector? The early models have the short wires and the laters have the long lead.

But I don't know what the cut-off date is yet. So I'm calling all mid 71' owners for pics of there 8 or 7 of 71' swithes. Or even a detailed list of what goes where.

Thanks again guys, this will help all who need this info in the future, especially when you buy switches from Ebay or Craigslist and you want to double check what it is.

    Any help is appreciated,
    Dave.

That'd be me. I'm going to be in the garage tonight cleaning a bit more prior to Canby, will try to remember to pull the cover and take a couple pics. If I forget, you can prod me in person on Sunday.

Dave: The switch that I posted that came out of a 6-71 has the long TS lead.

Did you ever test it on the car? I ask cause it has a short lead on the T/S switch and so far, everyone else's late 71's have long tails on the TS. So it's throwing me off a little. I'm trying to make this thread as accurate as possible so any help is great.

By the way, if you don't mind me asking, What did you pay for the pair, on Ebay?

Hope you can see what you need here, and also sort out your parking light harness wires from the normal stuff. I found it's hard to frame the picture from the floor using an SLR. Can't get my head down there.

OMG Matt!! Your switches look like ass warmed over......

You are gonna be SOOOOOO HAPPY with the rebuilt set I'm making for you. Your current set looks like it was just pulled from the bottom of Lake Iwannagopoopoo.

I'm gonna get on your set as soon as possible. Thanks for the pictures guys.

    Hey ARNE,
Now you see what I mean about the change over date? Yours is 1 month older than Matts and he has a double Black on the headlight switch where as yours is on the wiper side. Matts has a black in and black out on the HL switch and yours has the red and white (typical of the early models.)

    Thanks again guys
    Dave.

280Z guys, I still need all years and dates of the 280Z's

That's just my way of giving you that needed friendly "Nudge". My 260Z needs that kinda nudge as well. I need a center console, a dash or dash cap, All 5 carpets, door and hatch seals and a drivers side door.

But hopefully, I can light a fire under my butt and start rebuilding some of these switches and get some cash flow to get the 260Z on the road. It's already been tabbed and licensed and title is in hand so the rest is merely cosmetic.

I'm on my way to the garage to see what I can do for you before We head to Canby this week-end.

That's awesome Mike. So far, it looks like all early 240Z's up to 1/71'. even though Matt has an 8/71' with the double black wires on the headlight switch. Not to be confused with the double black on the wiper switch.

Thanks again Mike, I've been waiting for pics of an early 240Z set-up.

Thanks you again to all who have added pics and info. I'm almost at a point where I can start making switch sets apon requests. I'll be throwing sets into the Classified section Whenever possible. They are completely rebuilt and the best damn deal you're gonna find for the money. Besides, I Warrantee my work, try and find that on Ebay.

There is currently a set of EARLY switches in the Classifieds. (late 69 to early or mid 71')

Let me know what you think and if you have any special requests.
    Thanks again guys,

it's great what you're doing here but have you guys considered a real fix for the turn signal problem? A rewire diagram was made by someone on some forum a while back but it was not super clear how to fix it since he used a 78 switch on his 240z. Anyways sounds like using a relay is the ultimate fix, just wish i could get my hands the parts.

    here's the rewire instructions:

Have at it. And report your findings/results when your done. We like pictures of the process and final results.

BUT..... While you're at it. Look into the Tridon or Triton EP 35? Electronic Flashers.
They are Electronic and don't require the Heavy load of resistance that the Stock OEM Thermal Flashers require to operate. All you need to do is hook up a ground wire to the third terminal on the EP35 and connect the white and green wires as usual. The thermal load is what causes the Arcing in the first place.

Not only will you have a better easy solution to the over amperage issue, but your blinkers will be brighter and have a more consistant flash, Even with the car at an idle or with the engine Not running. They run between $12 and $18.

And until everyone does this, their switches will need the service, whether it's by me or the owners of the switch. Even if they instal an electronic flasher, they'll want the switch rebuilt first, so there is a good clean connection. But great idea though.

    Dave
That sounds like a winner Dave. Where do you get those Electronic flashers? I think my blinker problem is my flasher.....as I cleaned the switch and put it together correctly and still no blinkie.

    Greg,
You don't HAVE to get the Tridon or Triton Brand name, I just personally prefer those. You can purchase Electronic Flashers at almost ANY Auto Parts Store. Blazer also makes them. Electronic Flashers are the "Norm" in most newer cars, as Manufacturers slowly convert to LED taillights. Those LED taillights don't have the resistance that regular Incandescent bulbs do. When you go to buy 1, just read the package and get the one that covers a 2 to 4 bulb system. As your Z has 1 front and typically 2 rears, per side. Only one side flashes when using the blinkers so a 2 to 4 bulb Flasher should be fine.

    Dave,
I can build you a set for your 77' 280Z but I will need detailed pictures of the ones that Should be in there. Including the Connectors on the combo and Turn Signal switches, the writing on the Combo switch and other points of interest that make your switch's a 77'. I Charge $100 each and completely Build/Rebuild a set using the best parts that I have in stock. I warrenty them for 1 year. Warrenty includes 1 free repair-rebuild-or-replacement of the faulty switch. If I have to rebuild it more than once, then I require the owner to have his lighting circuits diagnosed thru a Certified Automotive Electrical repair shop, because the problem is obviously further than the switch itself.

You can email me at wolfin32z@yahoo.com for more info on payment and purchases. I don't have an Ebay ID or store as I concentrate most of my efforts and business here at ClassicZcars.com because I LOVE YOU GUYS!!! Wink Wink. I'm also a monthly Donator because this site has made my business what it is today. I keep the customer base low which helps me take my time and do a better job than most other business's of this type.

I'll do some research on the 77's and hopefully have some good news for you when you write me at the email address above.

One other thing, go to post #19. Those are from an 11/76' 280Z. Which is a 77' 280Z. Do a double check and see if those are the ones you need. If so, let me know and I can start building you a set very soon.

And read the post above this one as well,

Zs-ondabrain: What is really needed are schematics of the Turn Signal Left hand stalk and the Right Hand Stalk combination of switches for those completely rewiring a 240Z. With your knowledge and ability to rebuild these switch assemblies it should not be too difficult to come up with schematics of same. Would like to hear feedback from you regarding this matter. Please advise. Thanks.

Yup, you definately got a short in the left turn signal. Concentrate on the left turn lights.
They are green/red in the front and rear, at the hazard switch and at the light in the tach. You should be able to trace it easily that way. It's ground out somewhere.

By the way, The average price of a 240Z Starter is $40. Just go buy one. Even a Pull-A-Part starter out of a 280ZX (gear reduction) is about $10. Mine was $10 and that was over 3 years ago.

do you buy chance have any pics of a 260z headlight switch and connector? ive had the car for a few years and its time to start fixing it up. the problem im having is the P.O. or someone before him cut the plugs off both switches, i got the turn switch figured out since the wires all matched in color, but none of the three headlight switches i have match the car side wires, well, most, the dash lights is about it. i have a FSM but it seems all my switches are for a different car. my build date is 7/74. thanks

    Sam,
Dave will probably come through with pictures before I can. I have a 260Z combo switch sitting in my garage. Unfortunately, I'll be a few hundred miles from my garage for the next couple of weeks. (Does anybody know when it's supposed to get warm in Canada?)

One bit of good news is that RockAuto has a replacement switch that looks like NOS for only $200. I put one in my 260Z. Also, VintageConnections has 9 wire connectors that will work with the headlight switch in case you want to replace the connectors.

Damnit Sam, I was JUST in Auburn Yesterday. Had to go to "Carbs Unlimited" off 22nd and Auburn way? I could have brought you a switch. I have a couple (dozen? maybe?)

I'll try and take a picture for you tomorrow. But check this thread for and late 73' switches, they are the SAME.

My 1971 240Z 6/71 manufacture required the longer leads. I purchased a replacement turn switch from BD but the leads were too short and they replaced it with one with longer leads. Even with the longer leads I was barely able to make the connection.

I have a 12/72 built 73 240z. It was a recent purchase in great shape, but am sorting through a few electrical problems. This thread has been interesting. The right signal is partly intermittent causing me to discover the rather interesting arrangement inside that switch. The high beam was also intermittent, but that cleaned up pretty easy with some contact cleaner and resolding.

I am a lil afraid to take the turn signal switch apart as the double rocker inside looks hard to get put back together.

This is my first foray into old z cars, but I am quite experienced in lbc's (lil british cars) so the Prince of Darkness (lucas) has me well used to taking apart things not really intended to be taken apart.

The prices I have found for replacement turn switches are rather shocking. Any advice on obtaining a long pig tail for my 73, or the ease of reassembly of that switches internals would be appreciated.

Off topic to the thread, but nearby electrically, my horn switch has nothing to pressure the switch to be normally open and I find the horn spontaneously sounding going around corners. Shouldn't there be some springs or something to pressure the switch open unless you press on the horn pad? None of the sellers out there seem to have anything on the horn switch and both Haynes and the factory manual I have downloaded are unenlightening.

    Any advice would be welcome.

Over time, the horn tab will become missaligned with the steering wheels horn plate. Remove the columns cover and use a mirror or try and look behind the steering wheel and try and bend the tab back onto the center of the plate. You may also have to remove the turn signal switch. basically make sure that the horn tab is bend so that it has contact pressure against the plate but not so much that it will tear at or deteriate the plate and tab over time.

Yo may just have a loose screw on the tabs plastic holder.

Email me at wolfin32z@yahoo.com if you'd like me to rebuild your switches. It's a service I offer to the Z community and my prices are very reasonable. I have all the spare parts needed to rebuild everything back to where it Should be.

Yeah! There ya go! I need spring #21. It looks suspiciously like the spring for a weed-eater, I bet i can find something appropriate at the Home Depot.

Thank you and I apologize for hijacking the thread briefly, we now return you to turn signal and combo switches.

Zs-ondabrain, thanks, I will email you.

Thank you and I apologize for hijacking the thread briefly, we now return you to turn signal and combo switches.

Zs-ondabrain, thanks, I will email you.
I think Ace Hardware carries a better selection of springs. If you can't find something there, you could look at Grainger (though it's more expensive).

Ace is definitly the place! However I was highly dismayed, after shopping at a neighborhood Ace for 25 years, to find them gone on my last trip. The not too far away HD and Loews must have finally done them in. The spring dept at Loews did not have anything nearly appropriate, but as expected, a weedeater spring, a pliers and some spreading of the coils produced an ugly but sufficent spring load on the nylon thingee.

    Thanks all.

Zs-ondabrain, for what it's worth, my 03/70 240Z T/S switch and combination switch are identical to your 08/70.

    Default 12/71 Build Date

    Dave,

Hope these help. The build date is 12/71 and I am pretty sure they have not been tampered with.
