Default Mylar logo'd sunshades - Completed

Who would be interested in a Bolder Tint?

If you are older than 40, you remember them. Mirrored mylar with block-letter logos that stuck to the inside of your windshield, like so:

After several years of looking, I have made a breakthrough. I have located and contacted the original manufacturer of the Bolder Tint brand. While the company no longer does automotive products, he does still have the original dies for the S30 windshield, and is willing to do a batch for us. These would be the real thing - true Bolder Tints by the original maker, not replicas.

Here's the ground rules, and where we stand on this:

1.) This would be an exclusive to CZCC. The manufacturer wants it to be a club-related project. No direct offers would be posted on other Z sites.

2.) Minimum order is 100 units.

3.) The 100 units do not all have to be the same logo, but there would be a minimum of 20 units per logo. Logos available would probably include "240-Z" (as pictured above) and "280-Z". If we can get 20 or more commitments on either of "260-Z" and/or "DATSUN" those may be possible as well.

4.) Estimated price per unit would be $30-35 each, including shipping within the USA. Perhaps a small break for multiples to the same address, although any break may not be much, as each unit will come pre-packaged with instructions in its own mailing tube. So multiple shipping savings may be small.

5.) At prices in that range, I should be able to break even, or perhaps there may be a buck or two "profit" over my costs. If so, any amount over and above true cost and shipping will be donated to CZCC. There will not be any personal profit for the facilitator (me).

The plan is this - We'll start with this poll, to try to determine demand. Don't send money yet. If the demand is such that we feel comfortable with the possibility of selling at least 100, the next step would be to accept pre-paid pre-orders. Once enough pre-orders come in that I am certain that costs would be covered, I will order the units, and then shortly begin shipping them out. If it breaks down before the parts are ordered, refunds for pre-paid orders will be given.

So here's step 1 - the poll. I've set this up to allow people to vote for more than one choice, so vote for as many as apply. This poll is not a firm committment to buy. But please don't vote if you aren't fairly certain, as we need a pretty accurate count to proceed to the next step.

Too big. Not even certain about the "DATSUN" choice, as we can't remember if he ever did a plain DATSUN for S30s. Trucks, yes, but can't remember about S30s.

No surprise, it looks like "240-Z" will be the most popular. Remember that in addition to the 100+ total, we will need a minimum of 20 for any one logo. Currently only "240-Z" shows that kind of life.

And remember that "DATSUN" might not be available at all, even if we can get to the 20 minimum.

For $3000-$3500 someone could buy 100 and sell them for more on eBay.

Possibly, except the manufacturer is not interested is making any for a profit-oriented venture. He says the original idea was a car club project, and that's all he's interested in doing now.

Plus I'm not sure that they'd sell for enough more than $35 to make it worth the effort. In fact, I'm not certain we can find buyers for 100 even at this price. We'll see.

Perhaps but I know it's one of those items that people have been looking for over the years. I remember adding one to my car back when I bought it in the mid 80's. Clearly you want one enough to go to the trouble that you've gone through and I thank you for that. My point was that if for some reason we couldn't get enough to do the full 100 it might make sense for someone to go ahead and buy enough to ensure the 100 and sell the extras on eBay.

Well, the original deal was that they all had to be sold through the club. What a club member does with any he/she has purchased after that is beyond my control.

It looks like it would obscure vision for a tall guy (I'm 6'2.5"). My head almost touches the headliner in the 280 - not so bad in the 240 (lowered the seat).

They are transparent, but reduce the amount of light. If you want to see how much, go to a local window tint place and look through the silvered mylar tint.

I've been looking for one of these since the first day I bought my current Z. If it helps, get us to the 100 unit minimum order, I'll buy three.

Jim, please vote in the poll at the top of this thread. Or let me know which logo you are interested in.

We've passed the first milestone - we have the minimum number required for the "240-Z" logo. I'm a bit surprised that there haven't been more 280-Z votes.

I have to admit, it's not looking especially good for the 100 at this point. I was afraid this might be the case...

Still a few votes being added now and then, so I'm going to bump this to make certain that most people have seen it and had a chance.

Does your guy only do the block print style? I had one on my 7 that looked just like the fender emblem badge - more of a script style. I purchased that one at the dealer in the early 80's.

Well, if the supplier can make 'DATSUN' we are about half-way there. We're going to need a higher percentage of '280-Z' votes in the second half, but both '240-Z' and 'DATSUN' will make the 20 piece minimum. Not looking good for '260-Z' though.

Well, interest seems to have topped out at this point, at about half of what I was told we need. I'll leave this poll open through the holiday weekend (here in the USA), and then contact the manufacturer to see what options we might have at this level (if any).

I've closed the poll, and sent the following message to the manufacturer:

After polling the interest, the best I can come up with is around 60 or so, split thusly:

    240-Z approx. 35
    280-Z approx. 7
    DATSUN about 20

So that's well short of the 100 total, especially so since the 280-Z doesn't meet the 20-per-logo minimum. I'd guess that some of the 280-Z people might go with a DATSUN logo if that was the only appropriate choice, but that still isn't even close to the 100 minimum.

I guess I should at least ask if there might be a possibility of a lower minimum at a higher per unit cost. But if not, I understand. Thank you for being open to this proposal, even if I couldn't make it work.

All strips would be pre-cut to the S30 windshield shape in this order. The 710 windshield would be very different and one-offs will not be available.

If I can pull this off, the final order won't be placed until people have sent money enough to ensure that I can cover. So you don't need to have been in the poll to get one.

I've been in touch with the manufacturer, and it looks like we'll still be OK with the smaller quantity! Still limited to a minimum of 20 for any given logo, so 260-Z is definitely a no-go, and 280-Z is iffy at this point.

As I see it now, there are two options for the 280-Z units. We have votes for 7 units now, but need 20. So we either need to find more buyers, or perhaps the 280-Z votes could move to DATSUN?

Because of the lower quantity, price will probably be $35 or $36 each, shipped. Still firming that up now. Will be three weeks manufacturing time from when I place the master order until they are shipped to me, then more time on my end while I sort and ship.

So all you who want them, get prepared to send money, it looks like it will happen!

Time to discuss payment options. I would really rather not have to upgrade my PayPal account to accept plastic or to have this kind of dollar amount (60 x $35 = $2100) moving around. PayPal's cut is significant as well, so I'd need to build that into the pricing. I guess I will do all that if I have to, but would it be a big problem for any of you if we do this by checks and money orders instead of PayPal?

Arne: check or money order instead of PayPal works for me. Just let me know which works better for you.

I can send a check if that works best, I will change to Datsun from 280-Z, I would rather have 280-Z, I stated I would take 2 if that helped.

I'm still holding out for 280-Z for those that want it, Michael. I have noted your offer to get two if needed. I'll factor that in.

    Things are firming up.

Prices including postage in the USA - $36 for the first one, $33 each for the next two. For more than 3, or shipping outside the USA I'll try to figure it based on the number and/or destination desired. In other words:

    One - $36
    Two - $36 + $33 = $69
    Three - $36 + $33 +$33 = $102
    Four or more - ??

I'll be sending a PM shortly to all who voted in the poll or posted here in this thread with a number of questions prior to asking for the money. Things like Real name, shipping address, etc.

For anyone reading this who has not posted or voted, no problem. Just send me a PM and I'll add you to the list.

As of now, we are still looking for more orders for "280-Z", the current count is at 10, so we are half way to the minimum. If we can get a bit closer than that, I think I can figure a way to swing it.

Well, the whole thing appears to be unraveling. Now that I am asking for a firmer commitment prior to the money being sent, the interested parties are far fewer. Apparently its pretty easy to vote in a poll and say, "yeah, I'd like some of that." But as we approach the money part, it appears that a number of the previous voters are unwilling to commit. No, I don't plan to name names, but I am disappointed in how this is unfolding.

Here's where we stand at this point.

First, unless some miracle happens, there won't be any 280-Z tints as I've only got commitments for a total of 3, and need 20.

Without including the 280-Z, we're still at least 15 units shy of the reduced overall minimum (60 pieces), and even the DATSUN tints are only up to 10 confirmed. So we still need an additional 15, and at least 8-10 of those need to be for DATSUN. Looks like quite a stretch, at this point.

I'm sorry, and very disappointed, people. I really wanted to make this work. But I honestly don't think it's likely to happen.

Of course, it's not to late to get in, even if you didn't vote in the original poll. Just send me a PM and we can put your request in my spreadsheet.

We've been in touch with Hybridz on this, and the way we have to do it (pre-ordering a product that doesn't actually yet exist) doesn't meet Hybridz Group Buy requirements. So we can't post there.

I'm still crunching numbers, trying to figure out a way to make it happen. I'm almost certain that we're going to have to write off the 280-Z possibility, so I'll be contacting the few 280-Z requesters to see whether they want to move to DATSUN or opt out. If we can get close I might be able to cover a few of the unsold ones myself (most likely DATSUN) to continue to sell off over time. Another option to help with that effort would be to add a buck or two to the unit price to help cover the excess. So I haven't quite given up yet, and am still scheming...

At the risk of doing something I will soon regret, I'm going to proceed with the Bolder Tint project. Here are the final details.

Minimum order is 60 tints. We currently have about 40 spoken for. Based on that, plus the hope that I will be able to sell off the excess in a reasonable time, I'm willing to put up the rest of the money to get the order built. I hope I'm not making a several hundred dollar mistake...

In an effort to simplify bookkeeping, I have decided to average out the freight costs and do all orders to the USA at a fixed price of $35 each. (You Canadian buyers, I will be contacting you shortly with your special details.) No quantity discounts, sorry. My plan is this - now is the time to send your check or money order. But please note!! If you pay by money order, please keep the receipt, as I won't cash any until I get payments for close to 40 units. At that point, I will personally pay the difference to get the order of 60 made. But if we don't get the 40 or so paid for in a reasonable amount of time, I will return all checks and money orders.

I'd really like to have those 40 paid for by Oct. 20 or so to make this happen. I don't want to let this hang out indefinitely. So prompt payment is going to be a key to making it work.

Please print out and include the order form linked here, which also has my address on it. It will help me with keeping track of the whole deal.

I have emailed and PM'd the interested Canadians, also.

Canadian prices will be US$42 each, and the Canadian order form is at:

    http://1971.240z.home.comcast.net/te...-BT-Canada.pdf

I should also note, I don't think I'm going to be able to get away with declaring these as gifts, due to the large number that I will be mailing. I'm afraid I'll need to declare them at a value of $32US per unit. I don't know what that will do to you folks as far as duties and tax. I will attempt to ship multiples in as few packages as possible, on the assumption that any handling fee that they charge you for collecting the duties will only be charged once.

Things are moving slower than I had hoped. Up to an even 50% today.

I'm going to need to cut this stage off at some point, can't let it drag on indefinitely. But far enough along that I don't yet want to write this off and give up. Here's hoping more payments are already in the mail.

Would this item be a candidate for the CZCC store or eBay for the remainder of the items?

I'd rather avoid eBay if I can. I do now have permission from the maker to offer them a bit wider, as long as I still don't personally profit from them, which opens the possibility to offer them on other sites like hybridz.org once I have product in hand.

hybridz is fine. I mentioned eBay as a last-effort thing, so you could have enough of a customer base to sell whatever you'd need to make the idea work out.

"as long as I still don't personally profit from them" indicates to me that you could sell them on eBay provided you just used a "buy it now" price that's the same is what everyone here is paying (possibly plus the cost of doing business on eBay). I realize that eBay can be a hassle but surely that's a wider audience than what you have here. Clearly there are those of us who visit every day but there are others like Jerry who simply wasn't aware of this opportunity. I know you're anxious to make this happen but I'm personally willing to wait as long as it takes rather than have you feel like you have to pull the plug and return payments.

Oh, if I need to go to eBay to sell off the unspoken for units, I will. I would do it much as you noted.

Jerry, I'll send you a PM with the details.

And based on promises of money said to be in the mail, I'm going to extend my deadline to Oct. 31, maybe farther.

If you made a profit and donated it to the club, would that be allowed? Could be quite a bit of money for the site! Just thinking out loud (in an online sort of way).

That was actually the original plan. Will still happen if I can move the leftovers.

Happy to help generate sales of the leftovers if there is a way for me to do that. I can take pictures, write content ect. Just let me know if there is anything I can do.

At this point, just cross your fingers or whatever you do for luck. If we all can be patient, I think we'll get there. I have payment in hand now for 30 of the required 60. I have updates from buyers of another 11 telling me their checks are either in the mail or will be very shortly. If that happens, I think I can cover the remainder and will place the order. I also have inquiries on an additional 8, but no payment or payment status on those yet.

Still at 50%. Third day in a row with no checks in the mail. We're so close, but can't seem to make the final burst. Dang!

Received payment for 5 more today, up to 58%. Probably need another 5 paid in advance to proceed. We're finally getting close.

Well, we're very close, still holding at 37 paid for (61%). No payments since the 27th.

I've got names and reservations for 6 more people, 10 more sunshades. Three of the six have indicated some time back that they would be sending their checks "soon". The other three I have heard only the sound of crickets chirping in the distance.

So I guess I'm saying - if a few of you folks who have expressed an interest in these at some point in the process would break down and send a check, we'd be there. Not naming names, but I got to admit that this lack of follow-through is disappointing.

Well, I/we have been waiting on payments now for a month. While we are very close, I still need 3-4 more pre-paid before the amount left over is low enough that I feel I can pay the difference and have that amount tied up for the 8-12 weeks that I suspect it will take to sell off the unsold items. No new payments have arrived since the middle of last week, despite the fact that several people still have out-standing reservations.

Frankly, I'm more than a little discouraged and irritated, and am THIS close to calling the whole thing off.

I will be contacting (again) the people who have previously expressed an interest but not yet paid. But it all comes down to this—if we can't get payment for AT LEAST 3 more by this time next week, the jig is up.

It's a go! I have contacted the manufacturer to place the order. Will be cashing all the checks shortly. I was told earlier to expect 3-4 weeks from this point. Status updates as they are available.

For those of you who have not yet sent a check, please do so soon, as I will be laying my plans to sell off the unsold ones immediately after I get the pre-paid units shipped.

Also, there are currently eight (8) '240-Z' and two (2) 'DATSUN' sunshades still available. The rest are all pre-paid.

The order and initial deposit have been received and confirmed by the manufacturer. Next milestone will be paper mockups sent to me for test fitting prior to running the real items.

As of today, I have received payment from all people who indicated an interest save two. One of the two is still pending me working out international payment and shipping. The other hasn't replied since late September, so I'm going to consider that sunshade to be available.

That means I will have two DATSUN and six 240-Z still available, so if you haven't gotten in yet, there's still time.

A small delay on the production side. The manufacturer believes that the die he still has marked "240Z" is mis-marked. So I am going to (following his instructions) build a new paper template from my car, and will have to mail that to him before pre-production fitting tests can proceed. I will be creating the new template this evening, but figure this will probably add 7-10 days to the process.

Very true. I strongly suspect that this will probably be the final period-style mod for my car. Not to say there won't be other more modern mods hidden underneath (like the R-T diff mount I plan to install soon), but I've tried to keep all the visible changes period-correct.

Today's trivia. I was conversing with the owner of the company who makes these about the font or typeface used. We have been discussing how closely the original typeface can be duplicated. Here's an interesting tidbit, not just referring to the font used for the 240Z or Datsun sunshades, but all of the originals.

"...were hand cut stencils from fonts used by Pete Brock at the BRE shop."

Now that he brought that to my attention, it's obvious. Compare the '4' in the 240-Z original sunshade to the numbers (46) on Ron Carter's BRE re-creation. I wonder if Pete now has electronic versions of that font, and if so, what it would take to be able to get use of it for these?

Test fitting the pre-production mockups is underway. There will need to be some minor tweaks to the shape of the template, based on my tests. And as mentioned in the previous post, the font/typeface has not been finalized yet.

Yes - looks like they need more curve.. so they don't wrinkle.. The DATSUN needs more of a curve to it..

I thought you said the type face/font would be just like the originals...

    FWIW,

Yes, Carl, I did. That was before we found that some of the original stencils were missing. So we are working on that now. On Friday I sent a message to info@bre2.net to inquire about the use of the original BRE font. No reply yet, but it's the weekend. If you've got any influence with Peter and Gayle, it might help.
