Default Terry's Project 240K

hey guys

Last weekend i bought a 76' 240k, (posted it in my ride section)

Just got a few questions about some things i will get started on, as im new to the datto scene!

now i know parts are going to be hard to come by, but so far from what i can see..

-2 front doors would be good to get hold of as these are rusted out. no big deal as im replacing other rusted out areas with new metal
-the rear seat is badly torn at the top as well as front seats are ripped. (reupholstered?)
-rear garnish left hand side chrome strip is needing to be replaced
-i have got a set of twin SU's off what i beleive a 240z. are these worthy of putting on as the motor will be coming out and freshened up
-grille is a bit rusted.. maybe a replacement
-Both front and rear bumpers are dented
-Dash is cracked, but the dash mat has been completly glued on!
-drivers door panel has been cracked- but both have GT badges, as well as grille

Good points on the car is:
-All wood around guages and center console is perfect
-All guages and dash lights work
-fan works
-all lights work
-has a/c
-5 speed
-car is drivable and drives not too bad
-has original steering wheel, radio and tape player

The story goes i was told it was a gt. but compliance plates do not have gt stamped on it. so im unsure. doesnt bother me too much. and information on these cars is so hard to come by. Doesnt seem to be definitive answers.
but im going to drive it around for a couple more weeks, then its coming home to be stripped apart, full panel work, spray job, engine bay, motor freshened, interior, etc etc..

what are your experiences and suggestions with the fun i have to come??

Cheers!
terry

welcome Terry,

You've found the home of the 240K!
In regards to your enquiry about yours being a GT, the story goes something like this:
when the Datsun 240K was imported to Australia in early 1973 ( in coupe form only ), the first batch was badged as "240K GT", this would of only been a couple of hundred at most, which would of been stamped on their compliance plates. Because of "pressure" from insurance companies and the Government? at the time
also because of the fuel crisis, " GT " cars were frowned upon, so Nissan (Datsun here) decided to change the badge of subsequent batches to " GL ". The sedan
wasn't sold here till a few years later, so yours is definately a GL. A nice car all the same.

a 240K GT has a ID of KPGC110

It's stamped into the firewall

Nigel
You forgot the " R " on the KPGC110, as this was the code for the Nissan Skyline 2000 GT-R model, of which only 197 officially were made.

aggh.. wrote a whole long post and just crashed

Basically, 240KtoGTR is correct The 240K GT has been researched a bit on here, and there was 2 of us that had genuine Australian GT's (Art and Myself).

The Australian 240K GT's were the very first to arrive in Australia in the beginning of 73 (mine was complied 01/73). There is rumours that the GT's were actually the first non-develepment cars out of nissan/datsun and this is supported by the low VIN's (mine was #280). we have very early 240Z's too (again mine is #212), so maybe it was practice at the time.

I am not sure how many cars were Australian complied as "Coupe GT", but it seems to have quickly changed over to GL at some time in 73.. my guess is there are probably only around 200 or so, for historical sake it would be nice to know.. but records from the time are hard to come by.

Nissan 2000GT-R's coupes had the vin KPGC110
Datsun 240K GT's coupes, 240K GL's and Nissan 2000GT-? coupes had the vin KHGC110
Datsun 240K GL 4 doors in Australia and Japan had HGC110 (there was never a GT 4 door in australia)

the 2.4L engine was export only, and most japanese cars had 2L motors (?).. The sedan's came in a shortnose and longnose (like the coupe) versions from memory. Export countries included Australia, South Africa and Europe.

I presume the previous owner confused the GT with the japanese models GTX etc..

Yeah ok sweet. I'm prob not the first that has bought it believing it's a gt in it's lifetime. It came with gt badges and a gt handbook. Oh well I've got a good example of a gt mock up haha.

How do you go as far as getting parts for these? I notice rare spares make stuff all for them. I'm gathering when I come across any just thank myself lucky?

Forgot to mention that the gt was available in Europe. Probably where the manual came from.

Not sure if the gt over there was sedan too, possible

As for parts, 4 or so years ago, new old stock use to be quite frequent on eBay. Things have really dried up since. It really depends on what your trying to find. Mechanicals are not so bad.. other than that either a post here or possibly a wrecker

Yeah the Europe got both coupe and sedans badged as GT.

We originally got GT's then later GL's. For all intents and purposes they is practically no difference between GT's and GL's of the same years.

Somebody probably just bought some GT badges and whacked them on the doors and exterior. My Coupe also has GT badges, and the GT gear knob (4 speed).

took it for a short drive the other night, and just as i was parking it, cops defected me for 1 tail light!! lucky it wasnt rust because i got it cleared straight away! but $52 all just to change one stinkin globe!!

ah well on a good note, i got it home, and cleared all the crap out of it, and went over it a bit better. and its actually better than i thought! All the chrome on the car will clean up good. Its only one tail light surround and one side of the rear garnish that has to be replaced! so im cheering about that! even the grille should clean up like new!

the boot had a big rug covering everything, so i pulled that out and............. no rust! yay!

Pushing it into the garage tmrw, and the paint stripper and sandpaper will be in full force!

Nah Definatly not wasting time! Focusing on getting the body and engine done so it can be put back together and seeing as the little things are so hard to find I will put them on as I find them

A question also.. What's with my tail light garnish? The 240s ive seen have the small Datsun strip with room for the 240k badge next to it.
Mine has a long strip as you can see. What's with that?

I imagine it was an attempt by the previous owner to cover the holes of the missing expensive badges. Most wouldn't know any better.

Love the 240K's.

It's got a long slot in the garnish and it says Datsun on that strip. Can't see what it would be off. And can't see holes as if the 240 badge used to be there. Weird hey. One of a kind haha

Started sanding the guards down..

And Found this...

Bodge jobs. Bog straight over big rust holes. Found them in both front guards, the doors, sill panels and rear quarters. So pretty much everywhere.

From what i thought was going to be a quick job, sure as hell isnt now... *sigh*

Tmrw im cleaning front wheel wells, spraying them black and possibly getting the engine bay in undercoat..

ok. after having a dummy spit, i went out this morning and got stuck in. Cleaned up the inner guard and sprayed it in killrust enamel. theres a rust hole in bottom right, which i will cut out and weld up tonight hopefully.
Seeing this definatly bumps moral up after staring at rust all the time

yeah i noticed few of my mates using that method. might do it for the next mask cheers.

Little update: Got my service manual in the post today which should be a little help when im putting it back together.

ANd this weekend, im picking up a whole 240k for free thats been sitting in a paddock for parts. The bloke is a champ for letting us take it will get a few panels i can cut out to replace my rusty ones, will take the whole tail light assembly along with another one the bloke gave me so i will have 3 to fix up. its also got a good passanger seat and few interior bits.
Theres another one sitting there that was used as a rally car! even got a roll cage in it. But wait till you see the pics. the rustiest thing ive ever seen! yet its got mint chrome mirrors on it that i will take.
Im also starting to strip the motor down ready for rebuild. Im thinking: valve seat grind, stem seals, all new gaskets, rings, bearings, hone the bores, maybe port the head a bit. And get the twin carbs reconditioned.

all coming along slowly

havent done a whole lot. Stripped a tail light garnish and started sanding it down ready to paint

But my mind is set on some widened steelies for the 240K. theres a place here in sa that widens them but its quite pricey. I wanna go for jdm look with as wide as i can go with stretched tyres.

Anyone had experience with widening steelies or know of any rims that will suit or the best offsets?

rather than go the typical 'chaser' rims like off a R31, thought the crappy ones on it would look cooler if they were widened

fake wheels suck.

in adelaide you can go to extensive wheel repair or across the road there's adelaide wheel repair, both on south road (all of this is from memory)

so at the moment, my old man is helping me by cutting the rust out. once we have that completed i can get it to my house, and i can start the rest of the body work.
All the doors can be repaired except for the drivers rear. Its had the style line pushed in and cant repair it. So in need of another door!

My latest ideas after doing some research is to maybe try and sell the flat top carbs, and buy a set of Ztherapy round top su's. sounds like it will be better off in the long run. It will complete the setup when i rebuild the motor shortly.

Im also thinking i will prob get the bumpers straightened and re chromed.

next big job is cutting the rust out the wheel well, and replacing the whole section. i will put up pics

agreed, anything forward of windscreen will fit. This means guards and front bumper will fit.

Nothing from rear is the same.

Rear tail light panel from sedan/coupe is not interchangeable, KID-K's is a sedan cut and shut job sedan is wider...

qwik now has the gtr rings on it, but still no centre badge....no cut and shut required, you do need re-drill some of the mounting holes, but no cutting or shutting...it isn't wider, the bumper bars are also interchangeable....

nice!

Another question for people. With import monster, how are alot of people are getting numbers of items from japan, are you getting them combined shipping? from differnt sellers? how?

because say for a badge i want, its going to cost me $80 to ship and its not worth it for one item

Ah yes, my apologies, if I recall correctly it's the mounting holes on the sedan which are wider, correct?

I use importmonster alot, with 4 K's I have no choice. As far as the combined shipping goes, your purchases are stored in japan and when you have bought a few things you can release them altogether and save on postage..

if your referring to the 10mm nuts that bolt to the rear beaver yes, the boot on a sedan is wider but the chrome corner trims are narrower...

Importmonster has a warehouse in Japan that your items are stored at until you release them..

oh really. thats good. nothing has to be organised to release them? as in, its a simple enough process to let them know NOT to ship when ive bought an item. Better start bidding then!

forget that link you just posted blk180, i seen this car yesterday, looks as though it sat in the ocean for a fair while, never seen so much rust on a car, my dad and i both surprised it hadn't just folded in on itself. actually all panels were like paper mache`! i salvaged the grille, struts and some interior bits but the rest is not worth anything, don't even know how it'll get onto a truck without collapsing, even the chassis is crumbling!
forget that link you just posted blk180, i seen this car yesterday, looks as though it sat in the ocean for a fair while, never seen so much rust on a car, my dad and i both surprised it hadn't just folded in on itself. actually all panels were like paper mache`! i salvaged the grille, struts and some interior bits but the rest is not worth anything, don't even know how it'll get onto a truck without collapsing, even the chassis is crumbling![/QUOT

Mr jmt240kgtr, this wouldn't happen to be the K you went and looked at?

No it wasn't. Gerry popped in there whilst i was getting some stuff from the car. This one is two tone brown; brown paint accentuated with more than a slight hue of copper coloured RUST!

Going to be a big change in this project. I won the 4 door that was on eBay! In primer, body work done, disk brake rear etc. can't wait to get stuck in
