Default Northern California Weber (maybe Mikuni) tuning day anyone?

I have made the acquaintance of a guy who has been mentioned here more than a few times. Keith Franck knows an amazing amount of information about the Weber side-draft DCOE carbs, and has invented and manufactured a number of innovations. Just last weekend, he had a 'tuning day' for Lotus owners who's cars use Weber side-draft carbs. He offered to include us Datsun peeps but it was really too late to set this up.
I am wondering if we have enough people who would attend a Tuning Day for us Datsun guys with Webers?
I have a friend with a restoration shop who would be willing to host in Sonoma CA... (Keith lives in the Martinez area).
We could have a BBQ and maybe even a drive, the roads through Napa and Sonoma are amazing!

    Sound off if you're interested...

I think that is enough interest. I will talk to Keith Franck and see if I can make this happen soon. The shop it will take place at is called Original Customs in Sonoma CA. It is a restoration shop that does a lot of Porsche work but has done some Datsun work. In fact, there is a 280Z in the shop right now. He is a master welder and fabricator and builds cages as well.
Mark, the owner would prefer a Sunday as his shop week starts on Sunday and is closed on Saturday. We can have a BBQ, but we will have to organize that ourselves.
For those of you who are not aware, Keith makes the fuel level tool and hypojets. If he can't help you tune your carbs, your carbs are probably not the problem...

Here is a link to Keith's webstore with a few of his innovations - http://www.webstore.com/82598,owner_id,other_items

You Mikuni guys, Keith when asked if he could speak to tuning these and other types of carbs said that the 'physics' are the same... That said, we now have 4 guys who are for sure showing up...

    Silverstreak
    LeonV
    Spitz17

I will update this list as we go along... We need 10-12. Don't make me invite my Porsche friends with their downdrafts!

Thanks again Rob for signing us up.

On a side note: I saw a video on YouTube of your car with Bill (Silverstreak) on the track! I have been instructed and driven with Bill multiple times at NCRC Events! Class act guy, will you be attending the Laguna Seca days with NCRC coming up in October?

Spitz although I have done probably a 1000 autocrosses, I have only done about 5 track days. For that reason, I will be staying away from Laguna Seca for a while yet...

Ha Bruce! I do have a set of core SU carbs sitting around somewhere with a manifold that I almost rebuilt and put on when I was frustrated with my 'triple-trouble'. But they aren't the flat-tops. Not sure what boat they are preventing from drifting...

Rob, sorry I just got back from Long Beach (drove down to the japanese classic car show!) with the new triples (awesome, but popping on pedal-off-throttle)... so i just read your PM.
October is now looking bad for me I am headed out of country 2nd week of October and won't be back until November. I wish it could be sooner (Sept.), but hopefully you can set up more types of get togethers like this in the future. Thanks again all!

It's going to be pretty intimate... Even Bill may not make it. He blew another head gasket at Thunderhill on Friday... Moral of this story? Don't let Bill drive your car! 8O

I would like to thank Rob (conedodger) for the great day out in Sonoma! It was a great chance to meet a few knowledgeable Z folks, as well as a true side-draft carburetor guru, Keith Franck. Also, special thanks to Original Customs Restoration for hosting. Great group of guys.

I, being the least knowledgeable there, enjoyed learning a whole lot about Webers/Mikunis and the physics behind them! Highlight of the day was definitely Keith supplying the goods to help make Rob and Leon's cars run a whole lot smoother and quicker off the line.

    Will add more photos shortly.

What a great day! Glen, Patricia, Leon, Mark, Bill, Tim, myself and our carb expert Keith. My car ran good but now it is so much more responsive and crisp. The A:F ratio is in the 13:1 range at 70mph cruise. So very much better!

If you have Webers I highly recommend Keith's Hypojets! If you have Mikunis don't fret, Bill offered to drop one of his off so Keith can develop Hypojets for them! And why not? Bill doesn't need his Mikunis! He goes through head gaskets as often as I do oil changes. 8O

Man, what an awesome day! Throttle response has never been so crisp before and the idle is so much cleaner. I love how my mixture got steadier too.

This is just the beginning, I'll be playing with the hypojets to find the optimal ones as well as increasing my pump shot and possibly upsizing the chokes. Achieving Weber nirvana is a (big) step closer! Big thanks to Rob for setting this up, Keith for the time, parts and knowledge, Original Customs for hosting, and Glenn, Patricia and Bill for coming. It was a blast!

Rainman, Keith is already commenting on Sidedraft-Central about getting ahold of some Mikunis from Bill and 3D mapping and designing solutions for them. I have mixed feelings on this as Bill is already too fast to catch. Not sure I want his car running better...

Will do, both Keith and the host location restoration shop Original Customs are onboard. I just need to pick a date and post it...

You'd be 'teaching' Leon. As you recall, Keith gets overwhelmed in groups larger than 6-12. But you would definitely be an asset!

    Not a problem!

Seems like Keith is one-upping himself with the e-tubes. Looks like he's close to developing a newer, better version. The next tuning day could be a great chance to check it out.

    Hi all,

If you guys decide to have another tuning event with Keith Franck I'd like to know about it...
I'm in SoCal but would consider coming up to NorCal...

I actually just posted for the first time on sidedraft central about some mystery 44PHH jet bodies I'm wondering about...

    That's what I'm hoping for!

Is Mark still up for hosting? It would be wise to time it so that we can try out Keith's new innovations once he's got them figured out.

Mark is up for it... I have had perhaps a dozen different events at Mark's shop. We are good friends. Yes, I'm thinking March or April. After the rain but before it's too hot.

I'm getting pretty excited about the new developments Keith Franck has made in redesigning the tubes and jetting for the side-draft. It is apparently so good he is planning on patenting the design. So good, he can no longer publish the White Paper he had been just about to publish... So much progress it outdated everything he had to say!

Carb Clinic will be fun this year!

I will have to ask Keith about Mikuni's... One of our members here and a friend of mine Silver Streak, dropped off a Mikuni carb for Keith to look at and model. I believe that he developed jetting for it and I hooked him up with some Miki guys for beta testing but I have not heard anything from those guys. So, the answer to your question is maybe... Sorry.

I don't know if the Mikunis are as open to Keith's designs as the Webers are. A couple of members from this site did some testing but I'm unsure whether there was a final result?

BTW, I got another Z and another set of Webers, 45s this time (thanks to "theguppies" for the tip)! We'll see if I can get an engine rebuilt before the next tuning day...

    Hello Rob,

I would also like to attend the upcoming Weber carb tuning day. I've got a '74 260Z with the L28 swap and Weber triple carbs. Please add me to the list of attendees.

    Rob -
Let us know what Keith's viewpoint is on the Mikuni's - I have several jets and so forth and have tested last year with my AF gauge - I have been keeping a spreadsheet with the different jets and how they effect my driveability - like to know Keith's results for the engine that he has tested with the different Mikuni's.

Just FYI guys, Keith is doing some R&D. It looked at one point as if he would completely make the previous "Obert" tube obsolete but now it appears he may just be doing a redesign of a portion of it. At any rate, it will be a while before we do a clinic as there might be a change that you would not get to take advantage of.
