Default How stuffed is too stuffed?

I am looking at rescuing a c110 240k sedan from a bloke I know. Has been sitting in his yard for a long time. Think it will not cost much to get it off him. Looks like there is plenty of rust low in many of the panels, roof down to below windows seems ok. Chrome strips have almost rusted off bonnet and boot. I am not afraid of rust repair and have a good mate to paint. Are there any things or places I should look for that would make a car like this unrestorable? Would prefer to find something better condition but my options seem to be very limited. Thanks

Well hang on Panels can easily be replaced (provided you dont want to replace them with steel) if you want steel panels you will have to wait. if the floor is holy < (Easter reference) i just dont think it will be worth it!

Depends how cheap you can get it. If you find body's a bit far gone, start looking at interior (crack free dash, seats, instruments etc), motor, any chrome because it could all be worth more than what you pay

I started restoring a really rusty 4 door until when I started removing previous bog found sill panels, all 4 wheel wells, around windows, boot, under the car all had serious rust. So I pulled the pin

Pretty sure it is complete, interior ok and was driven to current resting place. Guess I should at least get it home and worst case use it for spares if I was to find a better body. Are floor pans replaceable or is it a massive job? What are your thoughts on fibreglass panels, boot, bonnets etc? I am not looking to make a show stopper just want a nice clean, useable car to bring back some memories. Thanks for your advice.

Look for rust in the wheel arches, roof, floor, boot and sills. Also check under the chrome work where the front and rear windows sit. Material collects under the trim and rusts out around the windows. Another bad place is where the door meets the guards. You can only see there with the guards off though.

Replacement sections can be made up for the floor depending on how bad it is. Guards, doors etc can be patched or replaced.

Picked it up today. Sure does need some work, the interior seems to be pretty good except for drivers seat which has cracked cover where you sit and cracked dash of course. Cracked red lens on lh taillight. Body needs major work, probably ditch everything I can get in f/glass. 5 speed manual was a surprise and came with set of twin carbs, manifold and set of trx wire mesh wheels. Couldn't leave it there for $250. Let the work begin.

I am going to try to fix guards but think bonnet and boot are beyond help. Where is best place to get glass bonnet and boot, are you not interested in going that way?

Getting a mate to come and check it out, make sure I'm not wasting my time first. If it is a goer I would be keen on the boot and seat for sure. What are you chasing for them. Thanks

With a good clean, all seats except drivers should come up pretty good. It was stacked with rubbish and old jumpers etc.

Not too worried about most of it but around the bottom of the rear window is almost gone. Looks like it would be a pretty tricky area to fix?

    Kinda what I was thinking.

I suppose if you've got the skills and time anything is possible....but even though it looks bad you might be able to copy that lower section

With my first project that was rusted out we managed to cut and shut a tricky part of the wheel well but at the end of the day even if you do a good job it prob needs panel beating and a lot of work to get it great. So with mine I opted to find a better shell. All depends how much time you have.
Shells that far gone can even get hard welding in new bits when the steels so thin

Pretty nasty stuff... hmm, strip it, start work on it, fabricate some bits that need replacing. In the meantime you may come across a better shell, if not, at least you'd have made a start on this one. Lot's of work though...good luck.

strip it and give it a blast with a degreaser and a hose, will reveal the worst areas and sort out good parts and not so good parts and go from there

Sounds like a plan, strip clean and stack parts so I can get a better look at bare shell. Hopefully a minter will turn up like that blue one jmkgtr found. So jealous.

Unfortunately not my shed, pic shows about 1/4 of mums smaller shed. Lots of room for projects. Stripped out heaps more today, windscreens, dash, hoodlining, trims, seatbelts. Lots of rust. Going back Thursday with degreaser and compressor. Will be good to get rid of all the rats nests, leaves etc.

Would for sure if it was a c110(probably along with most here) but a 210 would have to be for cheap for me. Testing the wife enough with one car. This rats nest enitrely filled behind the dash, filled about 3 plastic bags with crap and as for the snake skin, lets just say I kept my legs high when I was steering as it was draggged out of the paddock.

Anyone who deals with Ramjet be careful..

My mates have had dealings with him in the past and not saying they've gone bad, but stuff didn't turn out to what it was or wasn't.

Dude who owns the C210 is (I quote) "sh**est c*** ever"

He's been owing someone money for the front wheels for at least a year.

Has very small bits of rust none of which are on external painted surfaces, just need to get my 5spd in it. Been out of back garage 2 times in 20 years, offered money from arabs both times but not sold thank god.

Hmmm...seems the market's on the move lately! If I had a job, I would have parked a hardtop in my garage last week...alas, it's on its way to Saudi Arabia now. Surely have to land one soon.

Have been busy trying to get my sedan on the road. Had to d head gasket, repair head and #6 bore. Water pump and rad hoses but overall has gone pretty smoothly. Was given some old mags off a trx I think. Painted and polished the edges today, think they look ok for no cost. Am looking like I will have to join the Z club soon so I can get it registered, can't wait to get it out on the road.Click image for larger version.
