Autocross in the late 80s at the Oakland Colesium and the De Anza autocross with my brother. The Scott Performance L28 when new. On the first picture you can see where I hit a cone and knocked half the Datsun emblem off and the magnetic F in FP askew.

My first 240Z in 1979, an 8/1971. Had it about 3 years at this point. Already had painted it back to the original orange with imron. Still remember where the rust was that I fixed with the first body work I attempted, used rad iator hose with sandpaper wrapped around it for the wheel arches. Good running car. Dyno'd at some point at 121 HP (all stock). I'd take this one back in a minute.

I've owned my 240Z for 23yrs (it was my first car). Here's the Auto Trader ad from 1991 that led me to my 240Z:

    Default 1973 Picture of my 1972 Z

This picture was taken on my 20th birthday at my brothers house in Boston, IN. We had owned the Z for less than a year at that time.

    Default My first 240Z

I got my first 240Z in 1980. It was a very rusty '73. I replaced the entire front end, all of both sides , except for the last 12"s, the driver floor board and the passenger side frame rail. It had triple Webers, heasders, Koni's and a show quality paint job. Had it till 1987, when the Webers malfunctioned, threw gas on the header and burned it to a crisp!

It was a seriously quick, fun car. Enough to give me Z fever for life. I have owned four 240Z's.

There are a couple more pictures of it in my gallery.

Bought this right out of high school - so this is sometime in 1978. It was my first Z. 1973 White exterior / Red interior. Removable baskets on the wheels - depending on my mood for the day baskets in or baskets out.

Naturally she ended up with rust problems so I figured I would take it to a body shop and have fiberglass replacement parts installed. Ended up I wanted it black so I told the body shop to give it a paint job and put on the fiberglass replacement parts (rockers - front fenders). Got a price quote (I was only 18 or 19) paid 1/2 up front and started getting excited about getting her fixed up. After a couple of months he wanted more money and more money.....we all know the story but this one went to the extreme. He put a mechanics lien on the car and locked it up. Summer turned to fall and me and one of my buddies (his dad owned a wrecker company) went and hooked it up and towed it to my grandparents garage. Yep - you guessed it the next week the sheriff's department came and visited me at my grandparents and impounded the car at the police department. Ended up I got the car back unfinished - sold it - and the new owner totaled it the first week that they owned it...................

    The 70's were a great time to own a Z - without a doubt!

I'm not sure if this picture upload worked - thanks for the guidance Blue. This is my skinny, mullet - head self in 1978 with my 73 240Z. I loved that car - would have never met any women without it. The poor girl rusted out from under me. I learned my lesson - my current 71 Zs are both southern rust free beauties.

Bought my first 240Z in March of 1970. Drive it for about 20 months, put 68K miles on it - sold it for $4500.00 in Dec. of 1971. {more than I paid for it}. Then bought the 72 240Z that I've always kept. Thus started my love for the Datsun 240Z, and my friendship with Paul Jaremko.!

Not mine, but from my dad. There's more ( better ) pictures in his photo album, will need to look it up. He also lost track of it. I'm still trying to figure out the build date... and if it was a Dutch one or imported. It had the entire front end replaced en new paint job.

This should be late 70's/ early 80's somewhere..

    Default circa 1982

I was into rebuilding wrecked cars
back in the early 80's. This is my first
    z. It was a 260z from sacramento.
The kid that owned it before had a sticker in the rear window that said
"im a rocker" He had run it into a telephone pole. I replaced the whole
left front side including frame rail and core support. Good new looking parts were so easy to find back then. I painted it with flashy red metallic centari. Too bad I have no before's because it was toast and should have been scrapped.

After I graduated grade 12 in 1982 I bought my first car for $700 which is a 240Z that I've always wanted, even though she was beat up and rusted I still have her

The blue one was taken from 1977 to 1979, can't remember. If the other side was shown I could tell as the wheel covers came off when jumping Rail Road tracks at a high speed, never did find them. The other one is what it looked like 26 years later. Two years after getting out of the back of the garage it looked like the finished product.

I agree. This is a cool thread. I'm not sure if I've got any pics of my first Z either, but I'm going to look. If anything, I might have some from after "The Accident".

    Default Love this thread

    Hi,
I love this thread,I always enjoy seeing old pictures and stories , they simply are fun to see and very helpful to confirm
what is original and are popular add on items.

Here is mine, in 1995 I got my first car was a 1972 240Z(originaly 112 yellow) for my 26th birthday from a gentleman in California. He bought this car at Wally Tucker DATSUN ,700 Baker Street, Bakersfield CA.
    The car is HLS30-67518, 02/72.

When I saw this car, it was light blue metallic already, I fell in love instantly.
Spent only 5months with this car,I returned him the car the day just before my returning flight to Japan .I could not afford to own the car in Japan at that time.

Not a Z, but still a nice Datsun. These shots of my 1972 510 were taken in 1988. That's Five and Dime on the front porch in the 2nd shot. He's 9 years old.

My first classic Z, a '77 280z 5spd. Found it in the Austin newspaper, paid $2500 for in 2003 I think. Still had the FI on it and ran good. The wheels on it are 15x6 or 15x7 Shelby's that I bought on Ebay. If I had known how rare they were I would have kept them and put something different on it. The car went to Dallas and I believe was eventually impounded due to the buyer racking up parking tickets with it.

OK, I finally dug out my old photo album and scanned a few pics.

Here is my first Z taken in 1984. I bought a pair of Z's for $600 that had been sitting in a field with the hopes of making one good car. They were an orange '72 and a brown '76, but both were way too rotten to save. I learned a ton stripping them and working on them and I still use the carbs and wheels on my 260Z race car. I took this pic on the day I brought them home, but I had already swapped a few body panels between them as you can see.

After I gave up on the two rusty cars, I drove to Atlanta from Ohio in the spring of 1986 and bought a rust-free auto trans '76 280. Here I am washing it the day I bought it before I drove it 750 miles home on expired GA plates. As soon as I got it back to Ohio, I swapped the auto trans for the 4 speed I took out of the '72 and I removed the headlight covers and Libre copy wheels. I still have both the headlight covers and wheels in storage. I plan on painting the headlight covers and putting them on my BRE tribute race car and if anybody wants the wheels they are for sale. Otherwise, they will probably stay in storage for another 27 years.

Wow, I was about 100 lbs lighter back then.

    Jeff,

Who owned the 280ZX in the background? The Libre style wheels are my favorite and maybe someday I'll get a set for my '71 project, but right now the rust repairs and body work are more important. Plus, I plan to refurbish the original hubcaps to keep the car as original as possible.

Hey Robert, Catching the ZX in the background was just a coincidence and there were likely lots of them around as it was only a few year old car at the time. The photo was taken at my sister's apartment complex, so I had no idea who owned that car.

I was trying to post old photos of a few more old Z's I had, but the forum crashed last night as I was uploading them. I'll try again tonight.

    Default 1970 VIN 3435 Build date 4/40

Bought the 240Z 15 Aug 1970. Traded it for a station wagon it in 1972 with second child on the way. Contacted by second owner 9/89 with offer to give me first choice to buy the car before he put it on the market. He contacted me thru the Air Force personnel system. I was in Shreveport , LA and he was in Dallas, TX. We went to Dallas the next weekend and paid him $3000 the same as I paid in 1970. Currently being restored.

I am enjoying these 70s pics. I didn't have the financial ability to buy a Z in the early 70s but almost! I have an original one now I am keeping as a survivor!

    Default Bought new July 1971

Bought my Z from Jaremko Motors in Spokane, Wa., July 1971. First photo was on her maiden voyage to California from Spokane. The photos of it within the roped off area are in 1984 when I sold her at Tri Cities Nissan, Pasco, WA. The last photo is when I got her back in 2008. She is within about a month of being back on the road. See my garage for some photos after her new paint.
