    Default Police Version

    Hey guys,

Has anyone ever seen a police version of a 240/260/280Z?

wondering if anyone has any pictures. I have a few light bars from cop cars and wondering what it would look like. Since my car is a B&W...

Here are a couple of early photographs I have from the archives. The early poilce cars were indeed 432s. Hope this helps. Why deosn't someone build a replica?

Better than pretty cool. I think it would be absolutely brilliant! Is it just me or is the paintwork at the front of the two cars on thefirst picture Chris posted slightly different? Note also the different mirrors, siren and headlight covers. Is the one on the right a 2+2? It looks like it has the Japanese 2/2 badge on the front grille.

Plus, look at all the awesome cars in the background!!

^^ya, i see what you mean. and the front paint goes up about 2 inches higher on the 432 (i think that's what it is)... also, that has to be a 2/2....

Locally, we have Jaguars, Corvettes, Mustangs, and Camaros that will chase you down, pull you over, slap the hand cuffs on, then wait for a regular cop car to show up, then go do it again.

I know this thread is old, but here's something on Yahoo Auctions Japan that could be of interest to some: http://page6.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/f29909590

AV Translator gave me a few interesting snippets:

"It is low travelling of miracle! Performance vehicle of S30Z western police! Real thing! The capital city high, the patrol car uniting the formation, will white パト of S30Z one probably know the fact that it is running with that famous ending scene which travels?"

"1978 type travelling 8832 km 1 owner, it is genuine actual travelling!"

"About 1 year half the genuine color (it is the feeling where just a little cream color enters into white) all it painted before, but as to before the that is picture 1, it was white パト specification. Picture 2 is the present form." (I'm guessing it no longer has all the police decals?)

    Hmmm?

I saw that awhile ago, I never really gave it a second thought. It would be cool to drive around.

I'm guessing that the decals were tossed.

I was talking with a friend of mine who grew up in Japan in the 70's and he said that he saw Fairlady ZG cop cars a lot, but he never remembers seeing a Z432 patrol car. I found a picture of a 240ZG patrol car in the recent issue of Old Timer. I will make a scan and post it this weekend. Does anyone have pictures of more police Z's? Lachlan, I was not able to look at the auction link that you posted. If it is not too much trouble, could you post the pictures that were from the auction? Thanks in advance.

Jason, it would be awesome to make a replica of one of the Fairlady Z patrol cars, but It would have to be close or identicle to the original to pull it off. The steel wheels and all. This is just my opinion.

    Regards,
    Ben

I agree with that last part Ben. Lots and lots of original details and nitpicky things. That would be one hell of a challenge to try to find what these details actually were though...

I'm sorry Ben but I did not save those images to my hard drive, and now they have been removed from the auction site (it was a fair while ago!). The car was a 2/2 ex-police car I believe, but looked like it had been resprayed in plain white at some stage. There was a photograph of what the car looked like when it still was in service, and another of what it looked like now.

Looking closely at the pictures I posted, there are some things to notice. There is a Z car in the garage with the hood up. The number plates from one picture do not match the number plates from the other picture, ie. 4 distinct cars. Not only is there one gumball in the middle of the roof, but smaller lights to either side. The 432 car seems to have a radar pod mounted to the roof as well.

To make a 432 replica patrol car would be a little expensive to begin with. Don't you think? A 280Z-L 2+2 might be a little more reasonable. Your model looks excellent, Guus.

i see what you'r saying, jason.... like an actual US style black & white.... might be interesting... the best way to see what it looks like would be taking a couple models and hybriding them. might be pretty interesting, but i don't know that the modern light bar would look appropriate on the classic lines of a z.....

Well it took a while to find what I was looking for. I knew I saw those pictures before, somewhere! Fairlady volume II, that’s the book!!!

I also had a look at the picture, a better one because I have the book in front of me…
The right car is indeed a 2+2, it also has different wing mirrors, a slightly bigger gumball, different (flashing) roof lights (also different mounted) placed just behind the door and headlight covers

The left is a Z432 with sportive wing mirrors, nice round roof lights (backwards), no headlight covers,
Looking at the inside picture I find the car reasonably simple… it could be done!!!

Could not find a radar pod what you looking at it the second lamp..

Oh yes they would. You can't trust plastic model construction kits or their box art to be 100% historically accurate ( although some are more accurate than others ). Guus, that model based loosely on the '76 Le Mans entry Z is a good example - isn't it?

The article in Neko's 'Fairlady II' book states that a total of only FIVE Fairlady Z432 cars were used as fast pursuit cars. The 2/2 was more common and - as Ben has spotted - some Fairlady 240ZGs were also utilised.

    almost...
432 designation comes from 4 valves per cylinder, 3 carburettors and 2 camshafts. al that in a 2 litr engine

Thankyou all for the pics, I'll save these for later!

(Jason, it's more like your police force picking out the latest and greatest Corvette for service. The Z432 wasn't made for the police as far as I know. Do a search on this site for "Z432" and you'll find heaps of info about it if you're interested!)

So, anyone got a picture of a 240ZG police car?

    Hi Ben,
I think this is the article that you were referring to?

In 1972, Nissan donated a new Fairlady 240ZG to the Kanagawa Prefectural Police Department.

Kanagawa prefecture's most famous city is probably Yokohama, and the ZG patrol car would most likely have spent some time prowling the fastest sections of the Tomei Expressway. Nissan's backyard, if you like.

Kanagawa police seem to have kept the car in storage after it was retired from duty. Recently it was cleaned up and returned to Nissan, and it will be kept in the 'Nissan Memorial Sports Hall' at Zama. It will probably make guest appearances at Nissan shows and exhibitions in the future, and should be a good candidate for showing in the planned museum section at Nissan's new Yokohama HQ building.

Here are the pics from the 'handover' as published by OLD TIMER magazine:

Wow, if you could drive such a car as police man you would give your salary back to the commissioner

Wow, I love those pics Alan. I'm glad to know the car is still alive. The pictures are from when the car was handed back to Nissan, yes? I notice that the steel wheels are not painted black as usual, I guess they were just replaced at some stage.. The car looks pristine.

    Default hood emblem

Anyone have a close-up of the hood emblem on the 432s or seen one up close? It looks larger than a regular Z emblem and not round. More like a cop badge. Thanks for the pics everyone - great stuff.

    Hi Michael,
Yes, they are not 'Z' emblems - they are all wearing the Chrysanthemum ( Kiku ) emblem of the Japanese police force.

In fact, the Kiku emblem has something of a nationalistic meaning in Japan. Your wife - being Japanese - will be able to explain its significance far better than I can.

I tried to scan a close-up as best I could:

    Question

    G'day everyone
Ever seen evidence of a KPGC10 or KGC10,(old Skyline two doors) in a Police Car? These kits are the closest I've come to anything in an old Skyline...
    Cheers,
    Jim.

Thanks for the additional pics and info Alan. That reminds me - last time I was there we went to a "kiku" festival of some sort. Next time I'm there I'll take a closer look at a police car if I can find one - or if I'm lucky the Nissan museum will be open and will have the ZG cop car you mentioned!!

    Default Can't find one....

Well I looked and looked, and didn't find a single pic of a Hakosuka Skyline in Police guise.......

Seems to be possible to find just about any other model in Police colours, except the C10. Strange.

I don't think we can trust the plastic kit versions to be 100% proof that they existed. The manufacturers would often re-pop an old kit in new colours / box art, with a few extra parts, just to get more use out of an old mould.

    I'll keep looking, though.......

In Florida, it is quite common to see a drug-bust confiscated sports car or boat in police colors. The sight always brings a smile to my face. This thread has done the same and I want to thank everyone for a very interesting off-topic discussion and the photographs. Thanks for the smiles

I am with you Chris. This is a great thread. The Cosmo cop car is very cool.

I remember seeing pictures of an early Silvia in police form. Thank you Alan for the information on the Fairlady 240ZG. Those are the pictures, and it was out of the February, 2005 'Old Timer' magazine if anyone is interested.

Like 26th Z said, here in Oakwood, Georgia (Hall County), they have some nice cars. The Hall County police have a 300ZX twin turbo car in their motor pool. It's painted all black though, nice and stealthy. I don't recall a light bar on top though.

Be careful with modifying your car to look like a police cruiser. In Georgia, a few months back, some guy did just that with a Crown Vic. Needless to say, he was soon busted.
