Does this mean no one knows what this sensor is? I am not talking about the sending unit for the temp. guage.
On a '73 240Z, what is the water sensor on the thermosat housing for? The sensor with 2 wires coming out of it. I assume the one with a single wire is for the water temp guage.
One of the wires has broken off really close to the sensor. To close to be able to fix.
Thanks.

Hey Garry, is your car an automatic? My 73 manual tranny car only has the one wire sensor. I'll look at my wiring diagram and see if I can help you. I thought auto tranny cars had some kind of thermo switch to advance/retard the timing on dual point distributors. But my car has been converted back to a 1971 induction system. So most of the 73 parts have been removed. I'll check it when I get home later and let you know tomorrow morning.

I have the manual tranny in it. I also have a set of 4 screw SUs installed.
I am also in the process of removing parts from my 73 that are not either working or not needed.
Thanks in advance.

The water temp sensor was part of the emmision control system fitted on car with flat top carbie's. It main purpose was to control the electric fuel pump, in this case to dis-able it when the water temp was above a certain temp and revs below 300rpm [from memory].
If you have round top SU's and no electric fule pump then I can see no useful purpose for the sensor.

Bogged but not beaten
Hey Garry, Mike's right as far as I can tell. My 73 had it but not now. Found the connections under the hood taped off. My car doesnt have the electric pump anymore either and again the connections are taped off and tucked in with the rear main harness. Looks like a factory job as the tape is blue like the tape I've found in the dash wiring.Originally posted by Zedrally

Thank you guys.
I won't bother to fix or replace it then. I will actually pull it out and plug the hole.
