    Default Graphics Designer Wanted

    Hi all,

I'm posting an official request for a new site logo and mascot. If you have graphic talent and would like to help out the site, we could use your abilities! The artist whos logo we choose will receive $50, a club Tshirt, and microfiche CD.

The new logo will be placed in the upper left of all web pages and also part of our main theme. I am currently working on a new look for the site and would like to make the new logo part of it.

The old logo (oval Z) will not go away and we would like to fit it into the new logo/mascot. Anything will do, but, the design shouldn't be too complex. It needs to be fun.... We will also use it on our new club Tshirt.

Here are some neat designs I've seen:

Mike, Not to be a troglodyte about it, but do we really need a change? I like the red car(and I'll bet Arne does, too). I really like the layout as it is...IMHO. Also, I think you do a hell of a job with this site...the friendliest and the most helpfull to new guys...with the least amount of flaming. So, you see, I am a happy camper. My Dad always told me "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" Peace, Mike G.

Hi Mike, thanks for the reply. I like the existing theme as well, but, it's just too easy to copy. There are other forums using the same stuff I've put together here and we all start to look the same after awhile. I want to put something together that makes us stand out from everybody else. While I also believe that I shouldn't fix something that isn't broken, I also like to remember that change is inevitable. If we became too stagnant, this place would be a bore.

I agree, although of course I would prefer a yellow car versus the red one

Glad to see someone is answering the call..

It seems to me that we should have the talent base to do just about anything if we wanted.

ClassicZcar.com satelite?, Moonbase? Deep sea habitat? If we built the space shuttle like a Datsun would it be tough, small, fast and cheap to fly?

Haha... color doesn't really matter all that much, but, it would be nice to follow a theme. I am working on a new layout that has yellows and blues in it. A red car wouldn't look bad either.

Maybe this would be a little over the top but should the picture incorporate some ancient Japanese heritage? (Building, block print, warrior, kanji, etc...
Something done in flash would be cool to but might not be friendly to all viewers.

Just trying to get a feel for what direction you would like to take it.

    Jim

This attachment is not the type of ancient heritage I was thinking of but it would be cool to see the original parked next to a 240 then a 350.

    Hi Mike:
Looking at the first three examples you provided - are you really looking more for a "Banner Graphic" - that would go with or compliment a "Logo"?

The reason I ask is because a "Logo" is supposed to make a Brand Name clear, distinguished from others, by the use of a distinct but easily recognizable "icon" or "graphic symbol"... (granted many Logos do include some stylized text)

Having two symbols for the same organization, would seem to be counterproductive.

    just a thought
    Carl B.

I have to agree with Carl on that.

Keep the Oval Z logo as it is, but incorporate it into a new Banner graphic.

I'm looking for a new graphic logo, mascot, or simply fun graphic for the website. It will be placed in the upper left of the pages and will be used on our next Tshirt.

The LOGO itself is complete and I don't want to change that. I'm thinking it would be fun to generate some kind of mascot in the form of a car, a person, animal, cute cartoon girl, or whatever... I am really into the anime thing and that might be fun to do as well. Hell, a 3D character would be the ultimate solution.

What about the ZI Joe theme? Hell, we should find the doll that was used in that barbie commercial a few years ago. That's the fun stuff I'm talking about.... Or, even Speed Racer....

How about an anime girl with an anime styled Z? I'm no artist, so I won't attempt it, but there are surely some artistically inclined members here.
Another route regarding the anime-Does anyone have in thier collection any films that have a Z-type car?

Since everyone was saying they don't like yellow zeds, heres something I whipped up........with yellow zeds.

It's an animated gif, because thats easy to do, but a final version should be in flash with proper fade transitions.

You have to click the picture to see it work, and its only set to loop once, so as not to be annoying.

One thing to consider before you go designing any Flash or animated logos and the like...

Personally, I have one of my older PC's stationed out in the garage - a perfect spot to have one when you find yourself in a technical bind. This old PC is just that - OLD. But it works just fine with "ordinary" websites. In fact, it works just fine with this one. Frankly, I'd like to keep it that way. Any money I have to spend on getting a new Garage PC in order to surf here just means LESS money available to spend on the Z. :/

Animated gifs have are almost as old as the internet, and flash isn't that much younger. They worked on my pentium 166mhz that has been retired to the garage, when it was my only computer many years ago, so they should still work now.

I'm not too fond of animated GIF images. Flash is okay as long as it's done correctly and in small quantities (ie: a flash or a movement during a mouse-over event).

Anyway, the Japanese Anime (not animated), would fit pretty well because this is a Japanese car.

What about something like 26ths graphical representation of Her majesty-only a little more modern "hotty" than the classic Geisha?

Does anyone out there have links to some good siloute photos or graphics of Z's?

Basically I am looking to find some graphics that would be helpful to those of us who want to submit a design for the website. Currently I am at my grandparents house for Christmas and all he has is dial-up ... so searching for these things has been VERY slow going ...

Can't wait to see what people come up with!

Japanese comic art, Wangan Midnight in particular would be a good source for the art work your looking for!

Slightly off topic but a similar discussion regarding Z comics. Some early progress artwork here for ideas:

Toecutter, nice link. Those graphics are an excellent example of a character to give this place a little more human feel. Do you think Van would be interested in this contest?

I'll ask, he does some great artwork as you saw. He's planning to complete a whole comic as a sort of WANGAN MIDNIGHT spin off with a plot that revolves around some locals in Melbourne and a car imported from Japan!

*EDIT: Just PM'd Van with a link to this thread!

Mike, can you give some more info on what you're after? I'm interested in putting something together, but - and the others would probably agree - some more info would be great. $50 and a tee and a CD is a nice prize, but it's also not enough to get a bunch of different sketch ideas from an artist, and then another 3 to 5 hours polishing it. Most illustrators would very quickly balk at $50, including most amateurs with more than a few years of experience. Dentists and mechanics charge nearly a hundred an hour, and a lot of them are nothing more than trained. Nobody's a natural born dentist. Illustrators often have to unfairly argue their right to a similar rate of pay, despite the same years devoted to learning their craft, and - something a dentist can rarely claim - the natural talent that goes with it.

That said, I know this is a contest that would be viewed as a "labour of love" by any Z enthusiast, so it's all good on that front.

So if you can be as painfully precise as possible in what you want, I know I'd be more inclined to put in a few sketches and see what you think. The more I know, the less hours I have to give to coming up with ideas. But I don't have the hours available to devote to something like this for $50. My hat is off to those who do.

No doubt this post sounds a bit arrogant, my apologies for that. It's always a case of what you know, and what you don't. You guys know that if you put up $50 and said "I have a contest going to respray my hood". That would probably take the same amount of hours, but would anyone do it for $50? Illustrators - and designers in general - are no less qualified in their unique craft than any auto professional, but too often are they expected to work for a 10th of the price.

    Hi Van,

I completely understand about the fee. Most freelance designers ask anywhere from $30 to $50 per hour. The initial contest is to vote for the best design or concept. The final design can be polished by either myself or done by a professional artist. I think an hour of time should be plenty for a good artist to come up with a bunch of ideas.

As far as specifics, I like the ideas you came up with for the comic. A character like that would be a lot of fun for the club. After doing a bit more research on the subject, I want to follow a raster-illustration technique much like you see in mini flash movies on the web.

I am also not opposed to a long-term relationship with an artist who can create some killer movies and sketches for the club a few times a year.

, I love that graphic. Those are VERY good reasons to put it back. But, I was receiving complaints because people didn't want to browse at work due to the near-nakedness of the ladies.

I could put that in the upper left logo area... hmm...

After reading through everyones ideas - I came up with this quick. We can't use this particular anime chick because I borrowed her from an existing image. But I figured we can use a lady tastefully as a mascot whether she be anime or cartoony.

We should probably keep them separate just so we can use them on different areas of the site. But, perhaps join them together in the future? Here are some picts of Mr K...

The last image (yellow) is actually an actor that portrayed Mr K in the "Dogs Love Trucks" commercials.... (graham has the actor (with small glasses) shown behind the logo in a few posts above this one).

There are also other photos of Mr K in our gallery. Here's a link:
    http://www.classiczcars.com/photopos...x=0&y=0&limit=

The "theme" behind a Mr. K character should show have a cane, cool round glasses, and dressed classy. I like the one of him leaning on the cane. Playful and sophisticated....

    Mike (et all),

I have a quick question .... are we wanting a detailed, photo graphic logo? or are we wanting more simplistic Z logo (like the one in the background of the current club logo in the upper left) which is more effective to be recognized as a logo? Or are we going for a combination of both, similar to what we have.. I've seen suggestions for both styles ...

It would help to figure out what directions we want to go ... it's pissing rain, gusting wind to 50mph and the first weekend of 'official' bicycle racing here in Belgium and I'm glad I wasn't selected for the races this weekend ... so with this rest day from the bike I can do a little graphic work ...

PS: My wife and I's apartment sold and that means the Z is coming soon (and the wife hehe) Should be here middle of April. Yeay ....

I haven't frequented this site much... been busy with other things. I just ran across this thread tonight. So...

    1. You want to keep your present logo
    2. You want to integrate a fun cartoon-style mascot (maybe a Zcar)
    3. You want the site name included (same font?)

What about adding three Z-cars looking as though they've gotten together for a discussion "Classic Zcar Cub" style... one old (510), middle-aged (280ZX), and a young (350ZX). These could be personified similarly as in the movie "Cars". The old 510 could be smoking a stinking stogy and yapping incessantly while the young 350Z might be completely pre-occupied with a hand-held game and the 280Z could be stuck in the center, eyes rolled up in well-humored frustration.

Granted, the size will need to be increased a bit to accomodate the additional graphics. It's just a thought... I'm trying to get a feel for the place here.

EDIT: Just read the sexy anime chick post and saw your reaction.

Another idea... an old 510 (male), middle-aged 280Z (male) and a sexy young 350ZX (female). The female is swishing by the two male Z's... both their eyes are popping and the old 510's cigar is nearly falling from his mouth (jaw dropped).

This isn't a website for 510's, 350Z's and not many 280ZX's here either, so if you went down that path, I think you''d be wasting your time.

    Hi guys,

We are looking for a mascot or some kind of character that will be featured in many different areas of the site. The main logo (oval Z) will not be changed, however, I would like to take our new mascot and combine that with the logo in the upper left.

We aren't planning to host the 350z or the 510, but, we are considering the ZX (as it approaches 30) and possibly the Roadster (because it was the original Fairlady and basis for the Z). The graphic of all the car/characters sounds pretty funny and I'd love to see a compilation like that!!

I'm up for all sorts of ideas as we look into a redesign of the site.

I saved the image of DatMan when the actual figure was auctioned on Ebay. It was on display at a California Datsun dealership. If my memory is right, it was in the early 70's. I think it was about 2' tall or so. I think it was mentioned somewhere in our archives, so someone else must remember or know more than I do.

Here are some graphics of various things I've received over the years. The cartoon Zcar is something I thought we could use again. Let me know what you guys think.
