With my engine stopped and the starter disengaged (i.e. nothing else running), I can baaaaaaarely hear the fuel pump running when I energize it. It's a very low-pitched vibration. If your pump is "loud," it's probably about to die.
My fuel pump is loud. It can be heard inside or outside, even over the engine at idle. My two questions are:
1. is this the normal volume for the FI fuel pump? Or is the sound an indicator that it is old and dying?
2. If it is normal, has anyone tried insulating or similar to reduce volume?

I too have a loud fuel pump (1981 ZX Turbo). Mine was loud when I bought the car and since it did not run very good, I bought a new fuel pump. New pump is just as loud as the old one. Turned out that the problem was not fuel pump but other items. I am inclined to think my loud fuel pump may be a result of a blockage in fuel line (damper?). My fuel pressure is good but I don't know about the volume. That is my next project with this car. I think the loudness is caused by the pump working very hard to pump fuel thru the blockage. Or it could be your pump is dying.
Same thing here, The fuel pump is loud as hell, and when i put any kind of an intermittent load on the car; wipers, blinkers... The pump noise "goes along with the load" meaning that when the blinkers bling, the fuel pump gets louder (sometimes quieter) during the load part. Basically when the blinker lights up, the fuel pump noise changes.Any help please. Thanks in advance.
Well, since my last post on this subject, my fuel pump died, and I've replaced it. The new (OEM) pump makes a soft whine that you can barely hear. When you start the car, you can no longer hear it over the engine.
I suspect the pump would be a lot louder if it weren't mounted with those HUGE rubber bushings. You might check the bushings to make sure they're still intact. Also there are some metal tabs designed to "catch" the pump if the bushings were to rip/detach/fail. Perhaps you've got some metal-to-metal contact there? They should float inside their respective holes. There should be no metal-to-metal contact at all.

I just replaced the fiel pump on my '83 280ZX-T and its ALOT louder than the previous one that was going bad, especially when idling.
