Unhappy Transmission not Working when I installed Rebuilt motor

When I got my 77 280z it was running great the transmission was shifting fine but I had a motor problem. I got the Motor Rebuilt and now that it's installed the transmission will not shift. The Mechanic installed everything as it once was. There is a vacuum disconnected that goes from the Exhaust header, could that cause the tranny not to work? Please I need help if anyone else has had this problem.

It is an Automatic transmission. I purchased a Monza performance exhaust header. And it looks like it needs a vacuum connections from the exhaust header to the motor I don't know if this could cause the transmission to not work

it will change your shift points but should still go and do something. If you are talking about the vacuum modulator. something else is wrong if the tranny worked and all you did was change the engine out. when you say it doesn't shift what do you mean. Can't get going or goes but won't up shift or?????????. Only two things that I know of are the vacuum modulator and the kick down solenoid. If the kickdown solenoid is out then it will be a dog off the line and won't shift out of second unless you rev it up a lot. Still got fluid in it?????????

Those connections from your exhaust that are missing because you have a header have nothing to do with your transmission. That sounds like your EGR piping. You'll have to come up with a solution to that. The header either has to be modified to allow that piping to be hooked up, or the EGR valve will have to be removed or plugged. Otherwise your car won't run worth a damn when you do get the trans figured out.

Was the fluid drained from the auto or did the Torque Converter get drained when the trans. was separated from the engine?
Assuming the TC is correctly fastened to the flex plate and the selector is correctly connected and adjusted, the trans should do something when the selector is shifted to a driving position be it 1, 2, D or R, unless there is insufficient fluid in the trans.
What is the fluid level on the trans. dip stick?
    Capacity is 5.5L.
Try disconnecting one of the trans. cooler pipes at the radiator and crank the engine.
The fluid should pump out quite well if there is any at all in the trans.
If you suspect it is low, top it up with a litre or so.
You can easily remove any surplus if you overfill it by doing the above into a container.
The fluid level is supposed to be checked with the engine running , warm and in PARK.

was the converter taken out while the motor was out and the front seal replaced, and didnt reinstal the conveter far enough. i have run into that too many times with the backyard garages and the somehow they find a way to bolt the thing back up other than that check the fluid level and condition and the linkage could be messed up so it will shift directly from neutral to 1st and pass drive and 2nd, have seen a couple of those.
Thats about all i can see if no one took the pan off
    Hopes this helps.

    Thumbs up

The transmission has plenty of fluid. I'm not sure how the Mechanic installed the transmission when the motor was done. But it seems like the Shifter works (car starts in Park and Neutral, Wont start in any other gear), we have towed it. When I put the Transmission in R, D, 1 or 2 nothing happens it just sits there and wont move. Guess I'll have to take out the tranny and check all the connections.

    Thanks for the feedback
