some quick advice on if I can fire up this motor...

Hey guys,
Long story short i couldnt get the starter (right amount of teeth and all) to fit into the nub in the bell housing. So i trimmed a fair amount of the nose cone and now it fits, but im afraid it may snap. What do you think?

I am assuming you have a Silver 240 based on the name. Looks a bit scarey to me. Reason being, I dont see how that bolts to the transmission housing. If you can secure it firmly to the transmission housing with two nice sized, torqued bolts, you might give it a shot. Hopefully you dont grind off any teeth. But realize, those things put out MAJOR torque.

How much torque? I was once stuck on the 5 in stop and go rush hour traffic going up a hill when my clutch went out, then I stalled the motor when traffic stopped. Only way to get the car going and off the freeway was to start the car from dead stop, uphill in first gear. The starter was strong enough to get the car going....that is a Major amount of torque. Careful what you mess with.

I'd take the time to get the right starter.

"I'd take the time to get the right starter" as was so eloquently said by MOTORMAN7..........REVLIS some things you just don't modify a starter motor being one of them. Ask yourself this...SELF is it smart to spend more money after my modification goes bad and causes more damage or is it smart to (read the first line of this paragraph). NUFF SAID!

hey guys,
thanks for the input.
Its a SBC 350 going into a 71 240z.

It bolts up 100% factory. I only modified the nose so it will slip into the bellhousing.
I bit the bullet and fired it up, works perfect! We'll see how long she lasts.

What you can be looking at is pulling the tranny and replacing the flywheel. If you don't get the correct specs. for the teeth to properly mesh it will eat it's self.
