Default 1977 console with slot for a choke lever?

    Guys,

I just received a new console from Courtesy Nissan (part number 96911-N4725) for my '77 280Z and noticed it has a slot in the top of the console, right where a choke lever would attach. But since 280Z's are fuel injected there is no choke lever....

The console came with a plug in this slot, but it's still pretty obvious it's there. Courtesy advertised it on their web site as fitting 1977 & 1978 280Z's--no other years listed. I'm trying to keep the car as original as possible so I don't want to put in a part that's obviously not correct.

Any ideas about why the console has this slot? Was this used on early '75's?

    Thanks,

    Bob

It is posible that they have sold you a euro console. The 260 was sold in europe (and Aus I think) with carbs well into the late 70's....just a posibility, or it is an aftermarket console designed to cover the range from 260-280

My 78 has that slot with the plug and it was purchased from the original owner. The part number you list if for 8/76-up. For whatever reason, Nissan kept the choke slot that was present in the earlier versions even though the 77-78 were the only ones that has the console lid and box.

Also they used the same one for 2 seaters as well as 2+2s and the two seaters have a blanking plate where the 2+2 would have a rear ashtray. Also they had blanking plates in them for the parking switch, fuel warning lignt, as well as the choke lever so this was just a multi use, multi market console.

yep ..and I am glad about that cause I put my choke lever in there on my 77 when I took out the FI and put in SU-s. I had to drill a hole in the lever bracket to mount it ..but it works well.

Thanks for the feedback. It threw me because the console I'm replacing doesn't have this slot.

This information is good to know since I tried to sell the console I have for a late model 280, the potential buyer got all butt-hurt when he saw the choke lever slot. Haven't heard from him after I sent him pics.

I have had a hard time getting the cables set up properly though. O think my return springs on the crarb is to blame. It seems to me the cable does not pull the cable far enough.

Question for you 240 owners... do you need to operate the choke when starting your car when cold in the summertime?

If I am going for an original look I would turn down the slot edition. I would only use the counsole with the slot if there were no other options. To each his own. Out for the weekend.....have a sunny one

it seems to me that sblake01, and gator are saying that the console with a choke lever slot covered by a blanking plate IS the "original look" part since that p/n is listed for production beginning 8/76, thus for 77 and 78 model s30's in the USA.

am i understanding you guys right?

I have never seen a factory Z (S30) console that did not come with a choke slot-even the manuals show it in every picture and drawing I have found.

That's what I'm saying. I bought the car from the guy that originally bought it from Ontario Datsun in 1977 and neither he nor I have changed the console.

    Bruce,
I usually have to use the choke in the morning. Only not if it is hot outside. 90+ degrees. Doesn't stay on for very long. As soon as it revs up to about 2000 RPM, off it goes. Car runs very well. Hope this is helpful.

    Bruce;
The other thing to check on your carbs for your choke set up not operating smoothly is the fuel lines from the float bowl to the bottom of the carbs. If they are to stiff you get what you are describing. Replace them with hoses from either Nissan or Z therapy and this stiffness will go away the springs can not over come the drag of the stiff hoses.

Well I think both are the correct answers. Yes some came from the factory with the slot capped off and some came solid without it too because my 1977 280Z is Stock & original and mine does NOT have this slot your talking about. Mine is all solid and smooth there. No slot with a plastis cap. Apparently Datsun must have used both

There is a 77 all original interior with a shot of the console on ebay - can't get the link to work.

My '75 has the slot for the choke lever; the '77 I used to own was made without the choke slot.

Fun_in_my_Z, I'd trade you, but the console "box" had fingernail polish spilt all over the place by the P.O.
