Sound deadening and heat shielding materials

I'd like to know what everyone that has removed the original materials off the floor and deck areas are using. I'm aware of several products:

Dynamat
LizardSkin (spray on)
SecondSkin
Hushmat
Ensolite
BXT II RAAMmat
Eastwood Thermo-coustic (poorly rated)
Noxudol 3101
B-Quiet

I'm sure there are many more. There are few things I'd like to know about your experience and knowledge of these products. Cost, performance, application issues, flammability are among the most important to me. Please slay me with your knowledge, recommendations and evaluations.

We use Lizard Skin; great product. We got 5 quarts of both heat shield and sound; for $360 with the paint gun kit. Easy to apply and paintable. The only down side is that it will not stick to bare metal. I bought it from Tony Corriera of Barry White's Hot Rod Shop. Tony is a southern Cal distributor of Lizard Skin.

I used a product called Prodex from Insulation4less ( http://www.insulation4less.com/ ). It is a closed-cell polyethylene foam core with reflective aluminum foil coverings. it has a R16 rating and noise reduction of 19dB. Unlike bubble insulation, this stuff does not collapse under pressure or aging. Installation was pretty easy with 3M spray adhesive. I used about 60% of a 100' roll of 72" wide product.

I used megamat made by fatmat. Its butyl which is an adhesive rubber commonly found on butyl tape used in the HVAC industry. Advantages are that it has zero odor, sticks really well, has thermal insulation properties (no official R rating) and is affordable. Disadvantages are that its a bit heavy

I think there are plenty of good options on the market. The real key is to avoid anything made out of tar or roofing material like regular dynamat. Those products have issues with not sticking and terrible smell's when they get hot. Spray on material generally isnt thick enough to be effective in my opinion

Murdermat looks like super Megamat. Its essentially the same thing with thicker butyl core and high quality aluminum. Im sure its great but its pretty expensive. When I measured the car i figured about 60 sqft to cover the entire vehicle interior. If you use a real firewall insulator and use strips in the doors you can probably make 40ft cover the car. Using strips on large panels is important because the goal is to reduce panel vibration and not blanket the vehicle. Using two 6"x12" strips on the inner rear quarter panels as well as two 4"x12" strips inside the door gave me that new car door closing sound instead of "clang/rattle/rattle"

I have used truck bed liner on metal panels before. The concept works and lowers vibration, just not as well as an actual mat. The heat resistance is also minimal

Something in me just leans toward the mat rather than the spray on, stuff. Mainly because it is thicker and can be used to stiffen up panels where they might rub and squeak.

That PDF on aircraft soundproofing shows a product called Super SoundProofing Matt. Has anyone used that? Soundproofing Foams

George, I just got my MurderMax the other day, the reviews are good and I thought the price was fantastic.
It will be a few months before I install it.

I purchased Murdermat after a lot of study. The order arrived in great shape and shipping was pleasingly fast via UPS. However, the order arrived without an instructions (helpful hints) but I found cutting and fitting the material was straight forward using a sharp utility knife. How well it actually works only time will tell. The day I installed it the outside temperature was -15F and the Z was in full hibernation.

The company requested a product review and, as such, I wrote it up; both the good and the not so good. It was the first product review placed on the company web site and if you read it you will note the company published the whole review which I think was pretty straight up of them.

I also used Quiet Car on my ride. It's hard to give an accurate rating without driving before and after in a short period of time.
Folks have said my car has a refined ride- that's partially because of the noise reduction I bet.
I bought someones leftovers so I got off cheap- 40$

Bryan P. I have purchased the murdermax panels and am just about to install it over my own version of Lizard skin that I made up from the same components,
paint and micro balloons(micro spheres by 3M) I used Tremclad metal rust paint as the medium, it was applied at about 60*F and the metal of the body has been with in 30* - 70*F since then. That was a month ago and I can still push a fingernail into it if I push hard. As the temps increase I think it will harden up more but what I think is really 'giving' is the micro spheres, they are popping as I push. Tomorrow I'll be heating the inside firewall before applying the murdermax to the cab then spray adheseve on that to attach the firewall insulation. A bit of over kill I know but there is nothing like hearing a good song in a quiet car. I'll let you know how it goes.

I purchased the MDK Trunk Kit (20 sq ft.) and it turned out to be enough. In fact, just the right amount for the job.

It was easy to work with be using a sharp utility knife.

As to how well it works, please ask me again in a month - snowing here this AM!!

Marc, all but the doors to date. That said, I have two sheets remaining, and I'm undecided as to where they go until I road test it. Certainly, the doors are a possibility - if needed.

Okay, so I thought I would have the Murder Mat in a week ago but just finished it today and couldn't be happier. It adhered to my version of Lizard Skin very well and once it is rolled down is very difficult to remove. Although the surface facing inside the car is slick after it is cleaned with an alcohol wipe, it takes spray on 3M adhesive very well. I'm a long way from getting the sound system going but the echoee sound inside the cab is gone. I'm sure most of the stick on sound deadeners would do the same thing.
I bought 40sq. ft. and was able to cover everything I thought needed it.

Here are a few photos of the hush mat in my 260Z.. Try not to laugh.. I know it looks like a first grader did most of the application, I was trying to get maximum coverage while minimizing waste.. The roof was completely covered as well as the insides of the doors. This is great stuff, I highly recommend it.

I've ordered 80 sq ft (2 40' packs) of the BL version of Murdermat for about $225 with free shipping. The sales rep said that it would probably take 60 sq ft to do the whole car. I'm talking floorboards, tranny tunnel, firewall, doors, roof and trunk area.

He also said that there isn't a reason to buy their thicker stuff, as I'll probably have some left over and can easily double up on concerned areas.

My problem was getting all that nasty, hairy jute off the bare metal. Check out the green monster!

I used the lizzard skin just make sure you put it on heavy. not sure i put enough on and was to late to spray more. so i got some pad with the foil on it from my upholstery guy looks to be good stuff and was cheep. ready for carpet now.

Here's my progress. I've used all 80 sq ft of murdermat already, and still nothing on doors. Already has a much more soild sound inside. Got it in and laid out some carpet and vinyl for estimated future look.

I used a product from ProForm Products, (Welcome to Pro Form Products). Is is available in a box with (2) 29"x32" sheets which is large enough to do the rear deck area (I traced the original pattern before removing the old). This bitumen material is a touch thinner than the original stock material but is quite close. It also has a very sticky adhesive which keeps it down firmly whatwith all the ridges in the rear cargo area and is paintable as well. This material is black in color and would be ideal for the stock restoration. Just another option...

Thanks Jim D. for the PM, here are some pics as promised. I think you should be able to distinguish the pattern for the early Series I car with these pics but I would be happy to trace out a pattern for you and send it to you. The sheets are black but were sprayed with a grey primer in preparation for paint. I hope this helps for now...

It might be noted that someone has welded the steel tool box doors from a later car, that is why they are in the pics, so as not to confuse you, this is a 12/70 car. The original sound deadening went pretty close to the front luggage riser trim from other stock pics I have seen. I believe the bitumen went up to about 1/2" or so with cut-outs for the the luggage strap screws. I obviously went as far as the tool box doors only. These bitumen sheets are long enough for a Series II 240z but not long enough for a Series I as they would need to be about 38.75" long and the sheets are only 32" long. If you have the tool box doors in the back then these sheets are plenty long enough.

Perhaps another member might be able to supply some original pics of the rear cargo area to determine the correct position for your 7/70car. Rob

That helps me get a visual on it. I know there are several other members (Mike B and Chuck R) that are quite interested in maintaining the originality of materials used to restore their cars.
Chuck R. made a pattern for me of his floorboards and behind the seats and sent it. It is a big help as well.
Once I get all the patterns together I will reproduce them on a 1" square grid and scan them on a large scanner I have access to at the office and I will save it as a .pdf file as a reference for everyone.

Well, I started spraying in the Lizardskin this past Saturday. It goes on pretty well. I had treated rust with converter and rust-inhibiting primer before putting in the Lizardskin. I've used up a gallon of the sound control so far with about 75% complete. I have the door interiors left, and some touchup in areas where I think it needs to be a bit thicker. I've been taking photos, will post some time. I need to order more, and the ceramic insulation. The optional sprayer works well, and is well made. You have to take the time to clean it well though. The cup that came with my sprayer has a tiny crack in it, so I've requested a replacement. Not sure how it got there but I think during its manufacture, because it was there when I pulled it from the box.

I went with Dynamat lining directly to the inner plastic side panels, and the entire wheel well. I have the horizontal rear panel speaker box that MSA sells, duel side speakers in stock brackets (Passanger side one created and rebent to install on that side) and a Subwoofer installed in a PyleDriver box (sub box made to look like a tire generally installed inside rear of SUV's) cut to sit shallower in wheel well. No rattle so far.

Yes very happy with Dynamat. I was going with the approach of ensuring that there would not be any rattle noises from the amp powered four speakers plus subwoofer that I installed. I didn't use it on anything up front only the insides of the rear panels and throughout the wheelwell. I have not experienced any rattle at all with the system cranked up (for testing purposes only, ). I didn't want to eliminate road/engine noise because that's half the fun of the 240Z with my MSA performance exhaust setup. I would use Dynamat again on my other projects.
