The only Z produced by Datsun/Nissan as far as I know is the 240, 260 and 280. That car looks like a B210 with a Z emblem on it. Nice car but I think it's a fake, but you never know.

    Did the fact it has;

    Kemono - The Beast

    Also known as 120 Y or B 210

Staring you in the face when you load the page give that away? do you think?

Of course if you run a resolution lower than 1280x1024 it might not be there automatically and you may have had to scroll to read the above mentioned.

It would seem like an awfully large length to goto to make something up, if you're still skeptical try the "others" link, I'm not denying it could be bollocks but it's pretty cool either way... and I thought decent C110 pictures were hard enough to get... screw trying to find those.

IF that car is a legitimate Nissan model, I don't believe it was ever offered in the US.

Maybe there was a 140Z, but I don't think it used the same classic 'Z' emblem as our cars. I think he's made his own version of the emblem.

Reminds me of a story. My friend was looking for a 280ZX ( I know ) and he found a "ZX" in the local paper. We zoomed round to see it, only to find that it was a little white saloon with funny details. Turns out it was a "Sunny ZX"

Did you know that the 432 nearly became the "160"? They were going to name it after its horsepower ( PferdeStarcke ) rating, until they decided to call the HLS30 and HS30 the "240", and then realised that it would make the "160" sound as though it was actually LESS powerful than the 240..........

Here's a pic of the prototype emblem:

Looks like a Mustang blended with a B210 and B510 to make a wannbe Z.

I may get some flack for this but... I always loved the 120Y/B210

Having said that... Is this 140Z varient legit?
an L-14 instead of the pushrod A-14?
That "140Z" rear trim emblem looks real.

I don't really doubt it, as Nissan has a long history of special, low production models.

Definate 120Y with a front spoiler.

140Z, I seriously have my doubts. Nissan would have been advertising this in a big way otherwise.

120Y's were an in-expensive coupe for people to buy over here, not many exist now.

Another interesting model is the Datsun Sunny 1000.
Several are still being rallied succesfully in their class!

Variants were otherwise known as the 140J or Datsun Cherry.

The PB210 cas powered with the L14, and also the L16 (160J). It's models like these that make it easy to fit a L20B into a B210 shell, using P610 componentry.

    Yes it's a B210 coupe.

    Question

    Ben,
Do you think this "140Z" name is for a locally-made special?

I would have thought it was more likely to be either a local-territory dealer special or a porting / cam / carbs / paintjob 'special' like the "Samuri" was in the UK?

If its a genuine Factory-built derivative then its one I've never heard of.

Certainly never heard of any Factory-built cars with Dell'Orto carbs!

    Cheers,
    Alan T.

    Local where Alan?

I'm not aware of a 140Z ever being released in Aus, seems your not convinced either?

I would suspect you are on the right track with a locally spec'd up varient of the 120Y, however 'not in Australia!

I searched on google to find that apparently these sporty L series 1.4 litres were sold as a 140Z in South Africa.......... but that doesn't mean it's true.

Ah, that explains a lot! Its one of those strange South African local-market specials. It was like the Galapagos Islands over there in the Seventies and Eighties...........

Not a proper 'Factory' edition then.

It doesnt look bad for what it is . I wonder what the handling was like, they seem to havea bit of a cult following looking at the other pictures on the web page.

As for Christmas, mine is as good as over, got a lovely present from the police yesterday in the form of not one, but two speeding fines. The bastards got me going in both dircections down the same piece of road, 7 minutes apart (recently rezoned from 60 to 50 (by removing the 60 sign, not signing it as 50)). The Z just got pushed 400 bucks further down the list of important things to do. Man I hate speed cameras.
    Merry Christmas All

    Christmas what?
Oh, Shopping! Yes, I suppose I should....

I agree that it was a Sth African special edition, perhaps even a tuning-house effort. They are certainly PB210 coupe shells.

Top effort on the speeding fines Chris! Remember Adelaideians - red-light cameras will get you for speeding now too....

Yeah that sucks too, I know that I will get a few of them, its a perfect scheme, speed up to clear the intersection, and get a speeding fine.

Man, that's an evil trick! Getting a ticket for trying to get out of an intersection rather than ending up skidding to a stop right in the middle. Someone needs to invent a jammer for those sensors or cover the license plates and go on late night hunting trips to see how many lights you can shoot out. There is a limit to how safe the government needs to make the world for us. Talk about "Big Brother". Wouldn't mind them in school zones though to maybe keep the kiddies a bit safer.

    Hi All,

WOW... I am amazed on the amount of response that this thread has got!

From the few different cars I've seen on the net (google search) it looks like quite a few of them have the same 140Z badge. It may not be a Nissan world-wide car but it seems like it may be a car for a one off market?

Just received email from Eddie (the webmaster at ratdat.com) concerning the Datsun 140Z/160Z. Thought some of you might appreciate it!

The 140Z is a South Africa only model. It is based on the KPB210 which is sold in Japan as the Nissan Sunny Excellent. The difference between this and the normal KB210 (or Datsun 120Y as it's known in most export markets) is the engine. The Excellent was available with the L series overhead cam engine in 1.4 or 1.6 wheras the normal model only came with an A series overhead valve engine. The Excellent features revised front suspension and has a slightly longer nose to accomodate this engine. The 140Z is almost the same as the Japanese Sunny Excellent with the exception of the carburation. The 140Z features dual webers rather than a single Hitachi or Su's like the japanese model.

The 140Z| (and 160Z) were both locally produced in South Africa, possibly at Rosslyn and I would think will have some other differences from Japanese models in order to comply with local content rules. Other SA built Datsuns I have seen have things like Girling brakes or Borg-Warner rear axles.

When I first saw it i thought... "thats a 120Y coupe!" coz I recon thats what it is. The 120Y could have been "discontinued" in S.Africa so Nissan had to make a new model with the problems fixed, and as a popularity thing they called it a Z. Or it could of all been a populaarity thing... I donno.

The web site even says "Also known as 120Y or B210" so...
And the guy's e-mail is South African

And to all Americans... Not every car in the world was brung out in America!

    and Mike Novak,
120Y's arn't rare in Aust. Their everywhere!

    [QUOTE][i]
And to all Americans... Not every car in the world was brung out in America!

Based on your age, when these cars were 'brung out', you weren't even born. So your knowledge of them would be based on what you've read and what you've heard. This is not a 120Y but rather a 140Z. It's kind of like a 180B/200B vs an 810. (Read Alfadog's post). I was in SA in 1977 and actually saw a few of these cars, both 140Z and 160Z. There were cars in America that weren't sold in other parts of the world. There were cars in other parts of the world that weren't sold in America. So . . . . . . . ?

    Stephen,
I think all Chris was saying was that a lot of people discarded this car as just a backyard mockup by a lonely 120Y owner who really wanted a Z! I think he was just saying that just because you havent seen it, doesn't mean it doesnt exist.

'Tis all! Would have loved to be back in the day where Datsun brung out some real rippers!

The only doubts I have come from all of the records that indicate all z cars manufactured between 1969 and 1978 were made with the S30 body, and that there are no shared styling cues, between it and a 240, all of the changes to the 240 that we know about (260Z, 280Z, share distinct styling cues, (front, rear, side, and post badges, Headlight buckets, Side marker light shape) other than the rear trim that looks mysteriously like a sillplate that has been lengthened and had a plate worked into it, there are none. Only the Vin knows for sure!) Still, it is an interesting car...

I think we all realize that this car is not an S30/HS30/HLS30, etc

140Z is just a badge, used as a marketing ploy to capitalize on the "Z" name.

    Quoting from a prior post:

Good Shot! I thought so. Modified (like the Scarab) by an aftermarket company!

Still haven't heard from the owner with his VIN...

Well, we have an answer, Member 140Z emailed me a photo of his data plate, what he has is a beautifully modified B210(what it would have been called here in the states), that in the USA had an A14 engine-but his came from the factory with and L14( a 4cyl version of the 6cyl L20A). This was a hot car before the engine was swapped to the current engine, an L20b. The car is still a very interesting relative of the S30, regardless. His car is an early grafting of Nissan machinery!-what was done to this car is exactly what so many of us have done and are doing, substituting better (spelled higher output)Nissan parts into our cars.
What ever it may lack interms of actual "Z" lineage, it more than makes up for in its' modification within the Nissan parts bins, and I would be pleased to own one.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad the owner is now part of the forum.

But no further information has been gained at all, as (thanks to Alfadog) we already knew the story behind it.

No. Build by Nissan in the South African Factory and sold through Datsun Nissan Dealers in South Africa.

    Not an after market company.

They still make the Dasun 1200 ute in South Africa, It's updated a bit, and has a bigger engine (http://www.nissan.co.za/vehicles_bak...terior.asp?n=1) but its still the same chassis.

    Post Sunny Excellent?

Around 1974 there was a JDM Datsun Sunny Coupe 1400 GX , badged "Excellent GX". 1.4 litres twin SU type carbies, 95bhp and 875 kilos .
Aimed at those that could not afford a 240Z but still wanted the features.
Very similar to these South African coupes.
    Jim.

Because it has a 13B? Remember, because of the principle of the rotary engine, technically speaking you'd have to double the displacement making your car a 260Z. Oh, wait, you might run into copyright problems there.

uh, i didn't see the thread until 7 months afterwards. just like i didn't see the new responses until now

i know your retort got "chris" rolling on the floor, but it really doesn't answer my comment.

i was referring to the fact that there were a bunch of doubters during the period of discussion.

just because the doubters had not commented in 7 months does not mean they are "satisfied." they are still haters

anyways, you are not one of the doubters, so i have no idea why you need to water them down into the "everyone" category

Oh, I don't know. This all occurred a couple of years ago. Who knows what my mindset was then. It looks like the thread got a bit off kilter and I was probably just reacting to that. Is that your 521 in your avitar?

    Talking 120y

Nice car. For me this is the common 120Y there are tons here in Panama.
Was use to race long time ago with good results back in the 70´s and 80´s.
    Very lightweight.

I would not doubt it at all, if any one knows turbofords knows about the Ford Seirra XR8 from South Africa.....They always had some small market one offs etc....As for the carbs again a European thing I have heard about dell'orto carbs on other cars....in Europe..As why Datsun did not advertise them well where taking about SOUTH AFRICA in the 1970's....Think about it..

In 1978 140Z won the Wynns' 1000km race at Kyalami. The second came 140Y... What a way to upset machines like BMW 535 and others.

The badge was rather different than 'proper' Z car
