Rear Hatch Louvers

Hey guys. I was wondering if people who have rear louvers can post some info about them, I know there are many different types and I'm interested in getting a set. I just don't know what to look for. Are there kinds that don't need to be bolted on or is that pretty much the only way to do it? Any help is appreciated. Thanks

I have a set where some metal brackets slides under the glass weatherstripping, the louver is made out of aluminum, they show up once in a while, just keep an eye open.

The Interpart Brand are attatched by sliding and glueing tabs between the hatch glass and the weatherstrip. They are locked by a cross shaped key that articulates a slide locking or unlockeing the louver.
Most use a deadbolt type lock, and use sheet metal screws to mount to the hatch.

I have also been thinking about buying a rear window louver. I know MSA sells them (be sure to tell them you are a member of this site and recieve a 10% discount of all your orders - you do need to know your CZCC account number). Does anybody have any pictures they can post. I have searched and did not come up with much info at all. I know there are two different types metal and plastic and my choice would be the metal. The price at MSA is $264.95 and a discount for club members at $238.46 - being a CZCC member does have its rewards, (are you a supporting member - another reason to be one, right?) freight to my area is $28.00 and it is a two piece put together unit. The MSA is attached with metal tabs not screwed into your hatch, and they told me it takes 10 minutes to remove it for cleaning if needed.
That is all I know but would like to see some detailed pictures if anybody has made the purchase recently from MSA.

Now we have two interested in louvers and i had mine up for sale in a longer period of time while the car still was in the US, hmmm.
I bet shipping would be to high to ship it back.

Here in Oregon and Washington, they turn up on craigslist regularly. Often $40-60. But as noted above, shipping them might be expensive due to size and how easy they'd be to damage.

I have had louvers on my car for about 32 years, back in 1977 the only ones I could get were the ones that bolted to the car. They are make of aluminum and were flat black. I painted them about 25 years ago to match the color of the car.

If you plan on leaving them on for ever like I did then the bolt on will work.

Do the interpart louvers have a hinge so they lift up to clean the glass?

I am going to be removing the set that I have on my 240 and selling them this week. This is the metal (aluminum) set that has two bolted hinges on the the top that allow the whole assembly to tilt up for cleaning the glass. The unit is secured by two allen screws at the bottom against rails that run under the weatherstripping of the rear glass. I will try to take some additional pics tomorrow of the setup.

The set Arne posted appear to be Interpart, and they do have a hinge at the top.
I had them for years on my 2+2, they rattled a bit over bumps as they got old, the anodizing faded, and the grip of the rivets loosened. I painted them black, and that took car of the noise, and the fading!
Kept the deck carpet perfect, and the contents of the hatch out of sight!

Has anybody got a picture of the Dzus style fastener that attaches the lower latching point to the louver? I am guessing it is Dzus style as I haven't seen the correct fastener.

I have a set temporarily mounted on my ZX but the PO appears to have lost the proprietary fastener. If I can visualize the fastener then I should be able to fab up a replacement.

Got my dealer after-market style, bolt-on louvers for $20 on Craig's List. Was looking at other options and even bought the MSA ones that mount under the window seal.

Think I like the bolt-on version better, but will "test-fit" without mounting both before making a choice.

I had a set of semi-permanantly installed metal louvers on my Z for decades - secured to the hatch by metal channels that slid under the glass seal on each side and a center strip that attached to the glass with double sided tape. I don't like the bolt on type that requires drilling holes in the Z. As part of my on-goning refurb, they are now off and a new set of the metal MSA louvers await in the garage.

I watched ebay for good deals for a year or more and shipping cost was generally the deal breaker. I stop by MSA several times a year and recently picked up my set, so no shipping cost.

I ran clamp-on type louvers for a few years in the mid-70's. They had two hooks that slid over the top (leading) edge of the hatch, and two clamps on each side that engaged the sides of the hatch. They were painted flat black and I left them that way.

Benefits - much cooler interior, much less sun damage in the luggage area (as previously mentioned), and a much clearer view out the back in the rain.

Negatives - rattled a bit, the type I had were not hinged and you had to remove the entire assembly to do a good job of cleaning the rear window. Also, the side clamps marred the paint on the hatch.

I think the Chastain Shadow louvers were the best that were made 'back in the day'. I have a set of them on my Z and a set of the Intepart LiftLouvers on my 810. They both mount without drilling and hinge for cleaning but the fastener setup that attaches the lower latching point is better made on the Chastain louvers. The Interpart louvers use that flimsy T shaped 'key' that turns the latches into place and they sometimes bind which can cause the key to bend or break while the Chastain louvers use a brass nut over a stud.

OK, I have a set of the hinge style aluminum louvers on my 72.

I have a love hate thing going with mine now. I can live with or without them. But they do give the car a whole new look from the back and side with them on.
Two draw backs with them. #1 your drilling into your hatch and giving water a whole new way inside your hatch for rust later in life. But then again Z cars dont have any rust prob. so....
#2 they make a CLANG!!! sound that you can hear from city blocks away when you close your hatch.
But they look true vintage 70s cool......
If I do keep mine I think I will be looking for a set of rear 1/4 window louvers aswell. When you put them all togather it's a neat look IMO.

FWIW, on my previous Z, I added thin, soft neoprene strip to the outer contact surfaces and center. Was not obvious and completely eliminated the rattle.

Mine has rubber bumpers between the louver slats and the glass. The only time I get any kind of noise is when I turn the amp to full sub and crank the volume. It makes kind of a dull 'buzz' at that point but I don't listen to the radio at that high of a volume.

Here are the rest of the New Old Parts from 1980. Quarter louvers, quick steering knuckles, electric window motors, rear 3 piece spoiler (sold), front spook w/ducts and rear louvers. I haven't made up my mind what parts should go on, if at all.

The rattle was coming from the wallowed rivets(silver visible between the rivet and its hole), I drove that car hard...the repaint filled in the ratteling spaces.
I am working on reproduction locks and keys for the Interpart louvers, two of our local club members need both...

I've got an Interpart rear louver for sale. The part looks brand new, I'd give it a 9/10. This is the kind which lifts up for easy cleaning. Also, its made from aluminum.

I've got the:

-Original Interpart Part (i was told it was a dealer installed option)
-2 keys
- Original installation instruction sheet (looks like
-all mounting hardware and nuts. 3/4 Mounts still have the unpeeled adhesive on them.

HELP! I just scored those exact louvers and am trying to install them. I understand the two top hinges that slide under the weatherstripping, but then what? What holds the rest of this thing onto the car? I see no lower means of mounting!
Does anyone here remember installing this type louver?

There should be one big long piece that slides under the top and 2 small aluminum pieces, one for each lower corner that also slides under the glass weatherstripping. The lower corner of the louvers screw into the pieces that slide under the weatherstripping. Sounds like you did not get those two pieces.

There are two hinges at the top of my unit that slide under the weatherstripping, not one long bar. Maybe I have a different type unit?

I realize this is a really old thread, but I'm hoping you are still involved and have some info for me. I have an Interpart LiftLouvre from 1982 but the locks broke while trying to unlock them, so I've had the louvre off the car for a year and now can't find my key either! Did you ever have success fabricating the locks and keys for the two club members? I'd be very interested in buying a set from you if you did!
