    Default 240K coupe on ebay

    heads up guys,

there is a very clean coupe on ebay at the moment. It was up for sale on ebay a few months ago in Bris. wonder what the go is? (from memory of the earlier sale, the engine bay hadn't been resprayed - the new owner has only posted 1 picture)

Thought you all might like to know.

Heres the original discussion about the car:
    http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/s...ad.php?t=20405

and heres the car the first time it went on ebay:
    http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI....MEWA%3AIT&rd=1

Its got to be at least a 2 or 3 owner car now as its changes hands 1 or 2 times.

I would be very interested to find out how much he paid for the car from the QLD owner. There is no mention of a reserve. Damn profiteers! I hope he is in for a shock.
The car now seems to be a GT and not a GL, oh, Leather! That would be a first. I have asked for proof.
Still it is a very nice example and would look good in anyone's Garage. ;-)

It's the other way around. You people don't know much about cars. That is genuine Naugahyde on those seats. Geez, must have had to kill at least 6 Naugas to do up that interior. lol

Yeah I felt the same way. I was very keen on it the first time, even with the cost of transporting it across the country, but now... I bought another 240Z in the mean time.

Still on the lookout for a coupe body locally though.

Exclamation Should bidders be extra cautious?

Far too many negative feedbacks to sales ratio for me.
Have a read of these, something just doesn't sit right
    http://www.toolhaus.org/cgi-bin/negs...rn=Received+by
They are either incompetent or shonky....maybe both! The picture they are using is from the previous owners eBay auction, they've pinched pictures from Alfadogs brochure and book eBay auctions, the description is certainly not precise, but that's not unusual I guess
Their main gig is very average radio controlled toy cars, and their problems seem to revolve around A: Quality, B: Communication, and C: Post & packaging. If the car can be viewed before bidding, a lot of the doubts can be erased. If we can find out just where they are in Sydney, I may be able to check it out for any remotely placed interested parties (Brian?).
A few niggling doubts though, (when considered together)
    • The auction is a no reserve
    • in answer to a question about a CASH price, they answered $7000.

Do they really expect the bidding to reach/pass $7000?? Say it stops at ~$3500, classic situation for a shill bid!
I may be being unfair and uncharitable to the seller, but with all things considered.....
Maybe someone here can give their own take on it all? I would really like to be way off here, and see this get a good home to one of our forum members.
    Regards,
    Jim.

if it is the car that was up in QLD, i have no doubt that it is a tidy specimen, i can't imagine them removing parts or anything.

The car is apparently in minchinbery (out towards mt druitt), they obviously have no idea what the car is and are incapible of doing a search to see what a reasonable price is for it ($7000... that is the biggest joke!, you may get that for a car with <10,000KM!).

i would be interested to know how they even came across the car, and what made them think it is worth so much. it certainly isn't a cult car (yet ) like the 1600

i wouldn't be surprised if they are jacking the price too, they certainly don't seem to be on the straight and narrow.

I have been watching that auction. I am now a bit concerned though based upon your observations. I asked if they were willing to ship to the U.S. and they seemed to have no problem. I am very interested in getting a 240K as soon as possible. I am in a bit of a spot as I will be dealing with someone halfway around the world. Reputation is obviously important, and I would much rather deal with someone I have actually spoken to or previously dealt with. I'm open to any suggestions you guys may have. Thanks

honestly i wouldn't be trying to rely on them for anything.. given the feedback from the other website.

if you won the auction, and then got somebody here to pick it up, and take it to whatever shipping you arrange then it should be okay. if it isn't registered (either in NSW or QLD) then it would need to go onto a trailer to get driven to the shipping company, so you would be up for trailer costs and petrol i would guess (around $200-$400 for a weekend)

none of us (i assume) have had any experience in shipping a car out of australia, so i have no idea what proof you would need for the shipping company etc. for them to accept it

Doesn't look good. swa7123 and 2-spautomatic have ZERO feedback. gt_pulsar seems to have a thing for bondage and goth. andrew8717 is a Rolling Stones fan. themercyseat is a record collector. Only centralise has some credability of being interested in cars, having recently bought a car and car related items, but he doesn't look like a Datsun man. The reputation of the potential buyers seem to match that of the seller.

My first rule of e-Bay: know your competition as well as your seller.

The problem with ebay noobies, is that they tend to pay alot more than a seasoned ebayer would, and they bid really early, so they drive the price up.

Would be funny if it sells for less than the original owner was asking for it.

so what your saying miles is that the seller is a stones wannabe (and collector) who wishes to drive around in a 240k dressed in a leather police womans outfit whilst tying himself/herself to the nice leather seats...

but surely that describes most of us here

Hahahahaha! You know what i mean. I'm just agreeing with Jim. Looks fishy to have non-car guys bidding on this one. And I'm kinda the Gothic Lolita type myself. lol

Hum, I had a couple of days email dialogue with the seller. The car is located 30 minutes from me, but he still will not give me the address to com and see it. Maybe it had something to do with me asking him:
    (1) What the reserve is?
    (2) GL or GT - It's a GL
    (3) Pictures of the Leather please . . .
    (4) Did he buy it from the original Queensland Seller, or is he selling it for them.
Once I asked the last question, I have had no response since.

Kent, are you interrested to have a look at it Saturday? If so, I would not mind coming along. Maybe the two of us there could help removing this ill feeling my "spider senses" get from this guy.

    Jim & Kent,
The seller (Alex) has just contacted me back and we can go and see the car tomorrow morning around 9:00am. I have a contact number and the Address.

The story is that he bought the car a month ago from the original owner for $4500. That is his reserve. He says he has a freind that has offered to ship it to Japan for him and give him $10000 for it there. What did I say about profiteers in my earlier post !

Anyway, it's too rich for my wallet, but I thought it mightbe a good idea to look over the car for over club members that still may be interrested.

Give me a call today if you can make it tomorrow morning.

Guys, I am still following this auction as well. At $4500aus, it will be a bit more than I had hoped to spend. Especially when you take into account the fact that I will be shipping it to the States. But, I would be very interested in what you find out and what your personal impressions of the car are. I do not know what the status of these cars are now and am only going off of what I have seen others advertised for. I very much want to get as clean an example as possible, hence my interest in this particular car. It looks to be as clean as they come. Thanks

Are they shipping it to Japan and trying to sell it? Or do they have a buyer in Japan? The car's not going to be worth all that much here except maybe for novelty or museum.

That type of car here, C110, is currently going anywhere from 300,000 to 1,600,000. The 300,000 car is advertised as a PC110 4-door with 48,000km bone stock. The 1,600,000 car is a modified GTX with all the GT-R trimmings.

That being said, a 240K GL automatic coupe probably won't bring much in Japan. Just for the shipping, customs duty, and Japanese conformance makes it unfeasible.

$4500!? he as absolutely dreaming... if you look hard enough, you could find a descent example here for around $2500! it is just a matter of time.

and as for selling it to japan, as Miles said, i think he is going to get a pretty rude shock after it gets shipped there... there is a reason cars sell cheaply as exports..

9am is a bit too early for me,

    Default Car Inspection

Guys I went over to see the car and met Alex. I spent an hour or so there and went over the car with a fine comb. Alex is quite a nice feller and the car is even better.

He actually bought the car for $3000, but has spent money moving it and cleaning it up. There are now standard height King springs in it with new shockers all round. The tyres are roadworthy, but retreads. It now owes him around the $4000 mark. And he will not be selling it for any less, regardless of want the bid finishes at. ( You work that out! )

But the car itself is a pearl, I would go as far as to say that it's as good as my yellow coupe, if not possibly better, with the exception of the intior.

    Default Car Inspection Continued

For those that are interested, it's an original paint colour that has had a respay about a year or two ago by the looks of things. The body is in excellant condition, even for a 30 plus year old car.

The Window rubbers are great, they are the best you will ever get.

The engine has a couple of oil leaks in the usual places, but compression is even and high. There is a new fuel pump fitted, but it still has the original Dizzy. However, this thing starts from cold like a new car. I mean, it's better than most carby cars I have seen in a long while. And yes Jim, the air cleaner was still on backwards - it's now fixed ;-)

    Default Car Inspection Continued

The body has had a rust repair in the lower sill behind the drivers door. There is about a millimeters worth of filler cleaning up the sill. It looks like a good repair that will last. On the inside of the boot panels, the edges have been sprayed with a light tar compound which has protected tha car.

There are the usual marks on the drivers door, but these are all. I could not find any others over the whole car.

In the window seal around the boot, in the top left corner there is a little start to rust bubbling through the paint. By the looks of things, it is only just starting and would not take much to get it under control.

The crome work is excellant, all bumpers are straight and the only marks on the crome are at the front. Across the top ove the bonnet there are three small, small, small dents. Oh, and one on the LHS elbow.

    This car is straight !

    Default Car Inspection Continued

The interior is good but a little shabby around the edges. Don't forget this thing is over 30 and don't we all ;-)

It still has the original carpets with the plastic locking mounts. The dash has the signiture crack through the speaker, but otherwise unmarked. I didn't test the Air Conditioning, but Alex says it works.

The Drivers seat is the only one with visable damage on the upper section. This would need repair for an Australian Roadworthy, unless you placed seat covers over it.

The rear seat top has been repaired with ather nicely stitched covers. I guess the usual cracking has occurred.

The only real problem I can see in the interior is the lack of a clutch pedal ;-)

    Default Car Inspection Conclusion

On the whole Guys, It's a great example of a coupe. It will last the tests of further time. The only concern I would have if it was mine is that it is too good to mess with. But I guess it's up to the beholder.

As Kent says there are more good ones out there and the price is very expensive. Personally, I would drop $3000 to pick this up. But I know Alex would not take it.

So I guess it comes down to how much you want it.

    Hope this helps Guys.

PS: I have more pictures that could be posted, but 14 was enough for now. I also have Alex's telephone number if anyone would like to chat to him directly. PM me if you want it.

PPS: I wish I had bags of money to throw around and store cars like this one. ;-(

PPPS: I do like the colour.

I want this car more than ever now. I can't tell you how much I appreciate the in depth pictures. Do you think he would take $4000aud if it were offered right now? You said you have his number, would you mind asking him? Also, please tell him this is for the American that contacted him about it. He told me he had no problem with shipping the car. Any help I can get is much appreciated. I can be contacted directly at b.dooley1@cox.net or, my phone number is 619-807-1590. Thanks

He has to sell it for what the auction finishes at. That ebay policy. If he doesnt, he should be banned from ebay, and the winning bidder should take legal action to enfors the sale at the finishing bid.

I think it will sell for more thatn $4000 though.

Why is he selling it? He only bought it a couple of months ago? Did he buy it to resell it to make a profit?

It's a reall pity the original seller never let the auction finish.

I am still concerned about the bidding on this car. All the bidders seem to be non-car people. The high bidder now has a 50% ratio of good-bad. Brian, if you want it, I'd offer up $4000 AU$ and ask one of the guys here to help you out.

Allright guys. How do you suggest I proceed? Should I let him arrange the shipping as he said? Or is someone here able to help me with shipping? I will be asking for some help with a few parts as well. Namely the correct pedal to convert it to manual. Is it safe to assume that the pedal box is the same?

Even though Bruce says he's a nice guy, I'd rather trust Jim, Bruce or Kent (or the lot of them) to ship rather than the seller. And don't forget the other parts, Brian.

If you need any advice on importing a car to the USA, head on over to
www.nicoclub.com and find out the name of the company that imported
Dr. Rex Birkmire's (aka speedoctor ) csp311 Silvia form Japan to the USA.

I found thier website once, and they have imported lots of cars to the USA for people, mostly from Japan, but they might be able to help you, or give you some usefull advice.

Brian, I will have a chat to Alex tomorrow for you. Personally I don't think he would settle outside of and before the Auction ended. I think he wants as much as he can get.

He runs an import business though E-Bay and has a container full of stock coming into Australia. The money is needed for this. He was planning to keep the 240K and store it for some years as he is a Datsun/Nissan fan. But needs the money now. He is also selling his 33 GTR for the cause.

As for helping with storage and shipping, I'm sure us Sydney siders could arrange something. I now somewhere I could possible place the car and im might have some room at his place. I'm sure something could be done.

Thanks guys. I won't have any problems on this end. I have imported 3 cars already from Japan. I have just not had to set up shipping before though. And I'm sure that Australia is a bit different too. I can understand him wanting to get what he can for it. I will bid near the end and hope that it does not get out of hand. I will definately be looking for a bit of help if I get the car.

Well, the guy pulled the auction. I'm interested to find out what happens from here. I was perfectly willing to pay the $4k aud. I wonder if he thinks he can get more. I'm not too happy about following the auction this long just to have it pulled though. Kind of a waste of time. I guess we'll see what happens.

Bloody Hell, The auction has been pulled and there is a "buy now" price of $12000 for the next 12 hours. WTF. Alex (the seller, who is reading this forum) What are you doing? That is twice this car has never completed an ebay auction.

just report him to ebay.. that is BS.

he should look at putting it on a ship and sending it to antarctica... i heard from a very reliable source that the penguins there will pay more than AU$200,000 for a good condition 240K!

He's got a perfectly defendable reason (excuse) for pulling the auction.

"The seller ended this listing early because of an error in the minimum bid or reserve amount."

Well, I hope he enjoys the car, because I don't think there will be any more interest from the folks here.

Hmm nice sales tactic. Piss off the people that actuall want to buy the car.

Did anyone contact the guy selling the Blue 240K coupe on ozdat? At $4000 or near offer it sounds like a better buy, especially if you plan to do an engine conversion.

Since I'm new here, I'll bite: What's special about a manual car? Can't you just convert it over? Or does that not sit well with you knowing the car was once an automatic?

I don't think they sold a lot of manual 240Ks down in OZ.

Nothing wrong with an auto, except that most owners want a bit of performance, and the old autos are pretty average in that department (and the driver enjoyment department).

I think the manuals were far more common, in fact, in the good ol days, we all used to upgrade our 1600's and 180B's to a 240k 5 speed because they were plentiful and cheap.

Converting a car is possible, but it's a bit more involved than just sourcing a manual box. Read Lachlan's guide to a 5 speed conversion, which we did a few months back. Nothing too difficult in there, but just need to make sure you've got everything covered.

i think trying to find a 240K in a wreckers (let alone a manual pedal box) is pretty rare.. so you may have a little trouble finding one, plus all the centre dash bits you may need

Yeah I don't think it was because less manuals were sold, just that the cars that tend to survive this long are automatics. I for one am glad my car was auto. It had a very easy life! Well until I got my dirty mitts on it anyway.

No idea what this guy is trying to do. Not sure if he does either.

OK. I thought you Aussies were like us lazy Americans who just didn't like to shift gears. In America, during this period (and today, as well) there were far more automatics sold than manuals. The Japanese of the same period mostly bought manuals. It's pretty rare to find an automatic Hakosuka. Heck, even the top-line Crowns have more manuals than autos.

    Default No Bids

No bids, no sale at AU$6900 (approx US$5200). I thought that it might have gone at that price. There was one offer at AU$6000 (Approx US$4500) but the seller declined.
Hope it eventually finds an appreciative buyer.

I think the car is now unregistered too. The guy bought the car to make a profit. I think he is learning the hard way that he may have to keep the car for another decade to achieve this.

I guess he should do his research. Someone told him that these car were worth heaps in Japan, and he believed them. Probably referring to GTR C110's not your garden variety 240K. 240K's are worth very little in Australia.
