    Default Paul Newman

    Sad news, indeed.

According to John Morton, Paul is not expected to last more than a week or 2.

Picked up on the Healey list from the Vintage Race Group List ...

"8/13/2008 ... Lime Rock Park was closed down for an hour & a half today to honor Paul Newman. He was attended by his family, close friends, Skip Barber, mechanics on his race team, & those who happened to be at the track. PLN toured the track in his Corvette race car w/his Buick V8 powered Volvo station wagon following. He had come to say goodbye. Diagnosed w/terminal cancer, he is not expected to live beyond September. Race driver, actor, humanitarian, family man & friend - they did not come any better."
    Enjoy the Ride

Sad to know that a real class act is about to leave us.

Such an unfortunate conclusion for such a remarkable man. Over $250 million raised for charity, a successful racing/acting/business career, all done with a "one of the guys" attitude that seems to be in short supply these days.

Cheers, PLN, and thank you. Best to you and your family.

Paul Newman is a real humanitarian.

Did you know that all profits from Newman's Own go to charity? He also did much to push the organic foods movement with Newman's Organic.

    He will be missed.

Sad indeed - as a true fan of CART and Champ Car, he was loyal to the end.

Prayers for Paul and his wife Joanne.

While I've never seen him in person he actually owns a house less than a mile from mine. Even though he's always been a very private person he has been spotted shopping like the rest of as at the Home Depot and SuperTarget.

    Unhappy

Sad news indeed. I remember watching him race at Lime Rock years back, (early '70's) and absolutely killing the rest of the field. Took the att. pic of Paul buying tires at the Goodyear trailer, and then walked back to his pit with him, talking racing. Great guy. Will be sorely missed in his many endeavors.

Great actor, sportsman, humanitarian and that's just his public persona. He has set the standard as a role model very high. I've never met him but did see him walking past the grandstands at MIS during a CART race years ago. When recognized and his name was called out, he would briefly stop, look over the top of his sunglasses, smile and raise his hand slightly above waist level, to acknowledge the crowd but try to not get too much attention. His passing will leave an empty spot in our hearts

Man, just two weeks ago I was in the pits at the Nationwide race here in Montreal getting some awesome back in the day type stories from Stan Barrett (if you don't know who he is, google him, probably the coolest guy I've ever met). Paul featured prominently in a few of those stories (he's the godfather of Stan's son Stanton).

Only ever heard good things about the man from everyone who met him...

BTW...Sailor...what kind of Canadian are you...Paul's best movie was clearly...SLAPSHOT!!!

    Best wishes to the family.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid was one of my favorites. He was a definute hero up there with Jonh Wayne and Steve McQueen. It will be a sad day. Best wishes to the family.

    really sad news.
had to happen sometime, but another who i hoped was timeless.
set the bar very high for class acts.
always seemed like a guy you could have a beer with and engage about everyday stuff.
too many great roles to list.
    best wishes

    Default Timeless

    He IS timeless.
I met him twice. Although I'm sure he wouldn't remember, I will. The first time was a quirk. I was living in Gleneden Beach, Ore. when he was making "Sometimes A Great Notion" released also as "Never Give An Inch". Around 1970 I think. I had crashed my Bugeye into an earth bank near where he was living while doing the film. I was by myself standing next to the crumpled Frogeye. He drove by on his way to the filming location, and stopped. He got out of his Corvette, and came up and asked if I was ok. I just complained as how much it was going to cost to fix. He said something like "take care, and you'll be ok". I felt stupid after I thought about what I had said. It was weird to be able to see him up close like a normal guy. A few years later at Road Atlanta, I was at the Datsun sponsered test day prior to the SCCA runoffs. I was sitting on a guardrail in the old pits during practice, and he just walked up and sat down. We shared a few sentence's about who was going fast and who wasn't. I didn't mention our meeting a few years earlier. Around racer's, when there wasn't any spectators around, he was just another guy. When all the spectators showed up on race day he pretty much just stayed in the motorhome. Great memories. I'll always remember him as he was. Very special.

What a class act. He and my aunt were neighbors in CT- they had starred in several movies together in the 50's and 60's and were still great friends. When my aunt passed away he and Joanne both came to her funeral and took the time to speak to us- just as human beings, not as a Hollywood megastar. Then later, a few years ago when my Mom passed away (from cancer caused by 40 years of smoking too ) he wrote us a wonderful note with remembrances of the short conversation he and my Mom had at the funeral- 12 years earlier!

It's bringing back memories of my Mom's passing, so I hope that he has an easy passing, surrounded by his family, and no pain. What a wonderful man.

Please don't smoke people. The outcome is almost always the same. And it ain't pretty. TETS. (thus endeth the sermon)
