    David Martin recently purchased #47. We had a great Z turnout - 5 of us got accepted this year!!!!

    Dave Stone in his original #33 Bob Sharp car leading all of us, David Martin in the #47 Friselle car, Adam Carolla in the #38 Leitzinger 280ZX and Gary Cook in a #49 BRE Z and me with a broken tranny in the Walt Maas / Natural Light Z bringing up the rear....

    THAT IS REALLY GREAT - as we've talked about in another Thread - getting our Z's into Premier Concours and Historic Racing Events that generate a lot of Media Coverage - helps increase the visibility and market values for all Classic, Collectible and Special Interest Z Cars.

    Can't tell you how happy I am that you found "THE GIANT KILLER" - but on the other hand I'm kind of sad that now I can stop look for it -

    4th round of the 1974 IMSA season held at the Ontario Motor Speedway on May 19th. Winning GTU in this four-hour race was Walt Maas and Frank Leary in the F.A.R. Performance car. Also a shot of the OMS pace car already painted to advertise the next California 500 USAC/Indy-car race the following year.

    In that one shot, the Camaro would haul the Z-Car in the straights, then the Z would get it all back in the turns. That dice went on for quite a few laps as I recall. Wish I could remember which car finished ahead in the overall standings.

    Note the empty stands no way an IMSA race was going to fill Ontario. I dont recall the type of ticket that I purchased, but I pretty much had free-run of the facility. I parked out front of the race track at the beginning of the race, then went out, got my Z-car and drove under the tunnel and parked in the infield for part of the race (where I took some of these photos), then parked back out front and watched the finish of the race from near the start/finish line.

    Great pictures! 1974 would have been very, very early in the history of IMSA. Thanks for another shot of the OMS pace car. Wouldn't it be fun to find one of those cars!

    Not the real article, but there was an OMS pace car replica in the showroom at Costa Mesa Datsun where I bought my Z. Every once in a great while, in the mid-70s, I'd see one of those OMS replicas on the street around the Los Angeles/Orange County CA area.

    - most likely all of them! The two found were both repainted after a few years. However sanding down carefully though the re-paints and rere-paints revieled the original OMS Blue.. in both cases their prior owner history was known.

    Bob has a truly amazing piece of DATSUN history there. Not only that - he has done an amazing job of tracking down that history and restoring the car. That 240Z couldn't be in better hands.

    Hey, that's a cool thread, thanks for bringing it up and thanks for the kind words Carl!. Those shots were taken at Coronado Speed Festival last month.... While sitting there, Don Prudholme came by and started looking at the car. I asked him if he remembered driving it at Brainerd in 1978, and he looked puzzled for a second, and then i said i heard you blew the motor in practice and he said "oh yes, i remember that, but i didn't blow the motor, i just missed a shift and bent the valves!"

    Also, i was pitted across from John Morton, and he came over and was looking at the car and said he remembers driving it in 1974 in an SCCA enduro at Laguna Seca with Rob McFarland (the owner of FAR Performance).... Seems like they let just about "anybody" drive this car back in the day!!!!

    That last photo was a PR photo taken in 2001 when we tested the BRE car at Buttonwillow racetrack in central California and John Morton and I flew his plane up to the track and landed on the straightaway and we parked the plane along side the hotpit and we later posed the car next to the plane and his plane is White with red and blue stripes and I remember telling him it needed BRE stripes on the sides. Car was testing for the Monterey historics in 2001 where John was eventually forced to crash Vic Edelbrocks 1968 Smokey Yunick Camaro because he was blocking John every lap and one of the Alfa was fast approaching and John was not going to let him catch up. I will see if I can find some photos of this and some other cool cars we are building or have here at the shop.

    That's the old Fourways Engineering 'Bluezmobile' Modsports racer, here in the UK. Now in new ownership, but Fourways are still involved in prepping / running it.

    Many of the panels are alloy, and it has some interesting mods. Fast car.

    I couldn't really tell you how they get separated from their original source. I am an admin on a board with a thread that is just random (mostly car) pictures. It would have to be the most popular thread on the board as it is over 2000 pages long at 25 posts per page. Every once in a while, someone posts something Datsun. That is where most of these come from. This particular picture was posted by a guy I know personally from the Bay Area in California. He has very eclectic taste in cars but every once in a while, a Datsun pops up. I will have to ask him where they come from...

    That photo was the first taken by a professional photographer right after Shawn at Sharpsite motorsports redid the body and paint back to what it is supposed to look like. Shawn did an amazing job of getting the rear fenders back out to where they should be and the graphics came out amazing. I am hoping that I can get Adam to take it out for some racing although the big groups like Monterey won't allow it since it never raced back in the day. Shawn does some great work and he is branching out in the new York area to help vintage race guys be able to have competent help and track support as well. Well I am off to get another cool car for the collection will post photos when I return.

    This picture was taken in the warehouse section of Bruce Canepa's shop. If you look down in the left corner of the picture you can see part of the Frizelle car. Up above the elevator car parking system and to the right is a warehouse of rare parts that he finds and buys. On the floor just to the right and out of view is a staging area for parts to go on restorations. A great tour if you can talk him into it.

    A friend, Gary Cook who is on this site, was able to run at Monterey with a BRE replica this year. His car was built with input from Pete Brock so that might have been in the cards he played. You should be able to run that...

    Only if you count 1976 as "recent". That's the car that Andre Haller died in whilst competing in the 1976 Le Mans 24hrs race. We've discussed it several times on this forum in the past.



    How come you're 'finding' just so many photos that you don't seem to know anything about? Don't any of your sources list the relevant data? If not, why not? Is it because they are just endlessly right-clicking-and-saving and then re-posting elsewhere without taking any notice of the context? It's as though pages are being torn out of books, thrown on a big pile and then reassembled in random order.

    You make an interesting observation, Alan. Although the title of the thread suggests pictures exclusively, it would be nice to know a little about what we are looking at.
    For instance, "Datsundoc" posted a couple of "early Bob Sharp" photos a few posts up. Early? How 'early'? One of the pictures is of a G-Production SPL311-1600. Does anyone know when the SPL311-1600 raced in class GP? How about the other picture, an SPL311-2000 in C-Production? C-Production? Does anyone know why (and when) that car raced in C-Production? And...is that really Bob Sharp in the GP 1600? Is it not Joe Hauser?

    Since I started the thread, I can speak to this. My intention was in posting pictures to get the collaborative input of the members to fill in the blanks where it can be done. There has never been an intention that this be a picture only thread. I stated above that the pictures I personally have gathered come for the most part from a picture-only thread on another site. I have no idea where the person who posts them gets them, However I can tell you that the guy who has this vast library of pictures is Colin Chapman's nephew. I know him personally but I doubt he has time to discuss them. I do know that he and his friend who also has a very large racing picture library live in the same area of Florida as Carl, and have been to some of the same events because they have taken pictures of Carl's BRE Rally car.

    If you know something about the car or the race, by all means, contribute to the knowledge base.

    My confusion in thinking the recent B&W picture I posted was recent is because along the rocker panel it says something followed by 2001. I took that to be a year.

    Well, many of the images you've been posting have obviously been right-clicked-and-saved from elsewhere. So this guy is simply getting them from the internet ( I can tell you that he most certainly does NOT own the copyright to the many of them ) and is putting them on the picture-only thread that you're sourcing them from, but divorced from their original source and context. What a waste.

    The GP car is Bob Sharp driving and it's a 1964 SPL-310 1500 roadster. He prepared and drove this car in 1964 and set track records for GP at Lime Rock, Watkins Glen, VIR and Bridgehampton in 1964. He won the NE divisional championship and went to the first runoffs at Riverside in 1964 where he DNF'd. The 1600 was run in FP but didn't come out until 1966. Bob won the FP national championship in the 1600 in 1967. The CP car is Bob Sharp driving his 1967 SRL-311 Datsun 2000. The 2000 came out in late 1967. The 2000 was classed in CP with Mikuni carbs and later was run in DP with SU carbs, especially after the 240Z showed up in CP in 1970. Hope this helps.

    Here's a photo of Sam Posey in the Bob Sharp Racing #33 at Mid-Ohio in 1977 chasing down Walt Mass's 914. Posey ultimately won the GTU event. I was 18 when shot this photo, so there can be no copyright issues here. On the right-hand border of the photo is the imprint of "May 77". Wikipedia says that this race was held in June '77. Hmm. I wonder how I got this photo developed a month before the race? Or could Wikipedia be wrong?

    I guess there is a slight possibility that I shot this at the 1976 race, and had this print made in 1977. Oh well, it was a long time ago at a place where I have so many great memories. I never would have thought back in 1977 that 35 years later I would still be going to Mid-Ohio every summer, and still driving a 240z!

    Here is a couple better pictures of that car from the Detroit race one of it on track and one of it up at Adams Shop we are starting restoration on the sister car first. By the way the photo in post 376 of the Posey car chasing the 914-6 the BMW 2002 in the foreground is the Nick Craw car and if you notice the #46 on the door his co-driver was John Morton and of course Nick went on to be president of SCCA.

    Not quite - that is a picture from the 73 500. The photo was taken by the guys at TRACKSIDE Photo, and they loaned Peter their 5 gallon water jug, to help replace the coolant lost though a leak in the radiator. Later the hood was modified with stops repositioned - so it stops about 10 degrees sooner now. If it is in the way, the hood can be removed when you pull two quick release pins at the hinge.

    Funny that you sent that picture as that is the new car we just got and I am heading up this morning to put in a new windshield and do oil changes on everything. Yes we did the resto on the roadster and it won the rolex trophy at Monterey the year we took it up there. Currently starting on the sister car to the roadster which was John Mortons car. I hope everyone has a great holiday season this year all things considered.

    It's an R90CK ( Lola chassis ) with the VRH35Z V8 turbo engine from the 1990 Le Mans 24hrs. Specifically, the JECS 'sponsored' #25 car of Donnelly / Brancatelli / Acheson. It had qualified 5th, but DNF'd due to terminal transmission trouble.

    don kearny's old z (the one on page 12 with the large white backround and number 1) it was yellow and burgandy 8-4-12 by conedodger......and by the way..,i still have some original parts that the new owner of the frissell #47 car should have....see i was the one who bought the car from carson hurley then raced it myself for 2 years then sold it back to brad...delivered car to restoration shop in thousand oaks,ca.(can't think of name????but he was the x california lt.gov under jerry brown's first go round....in the 60-70's and was in the music biz too.)at the time i forgot to load these parts...called when i returned home but they just ignored me..guess i wasn't classy enough....!!!!!

    It is now owned by a restoration shop in Scott's Valley California. I am quite certain they would want the parts. They maintain a warehouse of rare and historic parts. Bruce Canepa is the name of the owner and I think you can just search Canepa Restoration.

    oh...i though canepa sold the #47 car?????i'm confused....when i go to canepa design,it comes up sold....u can contact me @ BERACEZ@FRONTIER.COM anyways the car when i seen it at the mitty in 06...,it was not original....dry sump system was gone....trans and rear coolers were gone....and if i look at the photo's there is some other things missing too.

    i don't want to insult anyone but that's the fact's on the #47......dry sump was a aviaid pump (black/gold)...oil tank was on pass side floor between stock front seat mount and dash...trans and rear coolers were mounted on the upwards floor behind rear stock seat mount...they cut the openings in that area of floor and they both had pumps to transfer the lube....

    Adam Carrolla tried to buy it. They were a ways apart as I recall. It could well be sold. What I am saying is that Bruce Canepa or Les Canaday might be interested in the parts from a vintage race car. Bruce might also be able to put you in touch with the new owner.
