    Default Quick photoshoot (240z & 510)

Here are a few pix my dad and I took downtown yesterday. It's a blast driving these two complimentary color 72's around. Lot's of double takes.

    Wait....... Is it 1972 again???

And you've got an L motor! Good for you. I'm so tired of looking under the hood of a 510 and seeing a KA24 or SR20 etc.

These pics bring two questions to mind:

    1) What's your address?

    2) What time of day are you busy at work???

....Ahhh. Shockoe Slip and Shockoe Bottom. Great place to hang out, eat and have fun--and snap pics of classic cars!

The Slip was a nice study break when I was in school right up the street...

I like to dream yes, yes, right between my sound machine
On a cloud of sound I drift in the night
Any place it goes is right
Goes far, flies near, to the stars away from here

Well, you don't know what we can find
Why don't you come with me little girl
    On a magic carpet ride
You don't know what we can see
Why don't you tell your dreams to me
    Fantasy will set you free
    Close your eyes girl
    Look inside girl
Let the sound take you away...

    Beautiful, man. Just groovy.

    Is that Z 112 Yellow?

Lemon Green......or perhaps another name I just came up with-

    Mountain, Do!

It's actually very close to a color used on fire engines or offshore boating gear, called "Saturn Yellow".

You mean in my signature? If so that is my 92 BMW E34 525 with an M52 swap (97-00 528 engine with Variable valve timing)

My dad and I built that engine too. M3 cams, M3 flywheel and clutch. It's like new. I have been building that car for two years.

Looks great. I'm trying to convince my own father to get his '70 510 in running order so we can do the same thing. We've already got a '70 Blazer and Suburban each, so we could have an early 70's parade.

Beautiful looking Z and 510. I am contemplating a 510 build, either a sedan or wagon though (may be easier for the wife to accept a 4 door). Like my Z, it would not be stock though.

My best buddy likes the Station Wagon the best. Lots of cargo area, and you can camp out with it at Sebring. The 510's are just "fun" to drive..

Cheap, interesting 510 wagon for sale on ebay in California.

    Item # 200241646574

Looks like it might be a fun project car. It's cheap enough I guess. I've caught the Datsun disease bad and now I really want a 510 wagon too! This $4/gal gas thing is just never going away. I just hope they had A/C. Anyone?

Would using an RB26DETT mill be going to far?

Looks sweet! Do these have A/C I wonder?

Looks like I better start cleaning out the other bay in my garage. I think I found the direction I want to take for my winter project- after I finish my Z. And the 89 Maxima. And the 1987 Albin 27 Trawler, with a Nissan 6 diesel engine. Sheesh.

Better yet...upgrade the garage...I moved from the 3 car garage in my sig to an 8 car garage(that would be pretty tight though)...

Plenty of room for wayward Datsun's...

Sounds like a good idea. I'm actually designing a new house with a huge stand-alone garage with a hydraulic lift, tons of skylights, drive-in and out doors, walk-in cigar humidor and dining area...

Mine has the dealer installed A/C - and it actually works pretty well. Nothing like any modern car with A/C - but for its time, it wasn't too bad. Most likely passible for NJ.

I've seen L28's installed... so with enough time and money... yes, an RB26DETT could fit. A friend of mine is just finishing up a V8 conversion in a 2dr.

I've kept mine "stock" so far - but I wonder what type of mileage I could get with a modern engine and matching gearing. The wagon is less than 2,000lbs... A KA24DE would most likely give 175HP and 28+ mpg in town if tuned for mileage... It would be an interesting project for Nissan Sport...

Garages - Always make sure that the people that work in your local Zoning Dept. read and understand the Zoning Requlations in the same way you do.. before you start the design process...

    Carl B.

Usually I'd agree with NJ being temperate, but last week was 95 every day. Pretty unusual. Since my DD, GG, the golden girl, hasn't had her r-12 fix lately I just put on a headband and sweat it out. Once you're moving it's fine though. So any reasonable attempt at removing the moisture in the air would help.

And I was joking about the RB26DETT in a 510. I would much rather build up another stripped 240 to put that monster into. Then I'd take THAT L-24 and put it into the 510!

Thanks for the reminder to check with local building department. Even though I'm a builder, I totally forgot that they might frown on an 8,000 pound hydraulic lift system or a drive-over working pit. Or a 5,000 gallon diesel reserve tank...with an attached emergency generator. So much fuel for thought. (sorry, couldn't resist that one. )

That has a tinge of "speaking from experience" to it...Is there a good story?

Actually, I have just under 50 acres of land zoned agricultural. As long as I leave room for a tractor (or even a ride-on lawn mower...), I can pretty much build as I see fit.

    Hi bigoak:
Very long story made as short as possible

I had purchased the lot behind my home, with the intention of building my dream garage. At the time of purchase we were in "the county" with Residential Zoning... By the time I was ready to start building, our neighborhood had been 'annexed" into the City that had grown to surround us....

    The City Zoning Regulations were pretty vague as to the size of one's garage so I thought I had it made - - - but as the people involved at the City Zoning interpreted the Reg.'s - I was out of luck.{They saw it as a possible "commercial" building}

26th Z then sent me a set of plans - - that most likely would have passed muster.. with the entire ground floor as a garage (wash out area for hurricane/floods etc - so it didn't really count as garage space)...

Sure enough - Florida was hit that year, and the entire Gulf Coast the following years, with hurricanes!!! That sucked all available building supplies out of this area - plus it put all builders/contractors into overtime rebuilding or restoring hurricane damage - which in turn sent the price of my "dream garage" skyrocketing from the $150K range to well over $275K.... I'm crazy but I'm not stupid... and I do have a wife... So there went the dream garage....

I still have the lot - - -and prices are starting to come down again in this area.... hope springs eternal!

I designed, redesigned and redesigned my dream garage... now if prices will come down just a little more... I might have a go at it again!!

    FWIW,
    Carl B.

Hmm..with the housing crash, those builders should have plenty of idle time right now. Might be the time to strike.

Carl, have you checked into steel buildings? I'm putting one up next summer for a friend- it's gonna be an indoor equestrian center- 100w X 160d X 14h for under $75k for the shell. I imagine that's somewhat bigger than you plan, but they scale down well. Add a pad, some furring, insulation and sheetrock, etc. and instant building for almost peanuts.

A few pix I took Friday eve. The 510 is a blast to drive. I think we are going to take the Z and the 510 to the drag strip in a few weeks to see what they will run. I want to dyno my car as well.

I love industrial photo-shoot locations!. That downtown pic is great as well.

Awesome cars man, I wish I had another Datsun in my area I could drive around with and be cool too.
