Hi Jim, good buddy! What a nice list of gear you have! Although my Z still holds my rapt attention, to be closely followed by my (newly planned) winter project of transplanting a turbocharged LD28 into another 240Z shell, I'm actually most intrigued by the Corsair. That aircraft, the P-51 and the Supermarine Spitfire all share my appreciation equally! What is it "they" say, "beauty follows function"? Flying has always been one of the loves of my life, which unfortunately I've been unable to pursue due to time constraints. It's not something I want to do without a significant commitment of effort and practice. Flying as well as sailing, which is almost flying rotated by 90 degrees- that I still have enough time for, as I started to accumulate those useful skills at a very early age- unlike flying, welding or using a metal lathe.

Welding and and proper use of the metal lathe are two of the primary mechanical skills that remain on my wish list to be minored (as opposed to being mastered, as I wouldn't be so presumptuous to think that's possible without beginning at a much earlier time in life- not that I'm an old dog. Arf. ) Or is that a demonstration of "rolling over"? I'd like to be much better with the brake, plasma cutter and milling machine too.

Oh golly, where do I begin? Lets start with the "bat cave", the little 12X38 foot addition Grandpa built for his Airstreams. It houses the 68 Roadster, 9 tons of red rock (indiginous to this area and can not get wet without falling apart) quarried in 1890 and used for foundation stone. Someday it will be used in an indoor fireplace. An 8 horse 120 gallon air compressor, some metal shelving and garden tools, weed eater and chain saw, a non working big screen, (big brother's), and a bathroom.

The main part of the garage (26X38) has in it now my 73Z, and #110, a John Deere 111H, 3-3ft by 8 ft work tables, 3 work benches, a huge amount of garage sale stuff that needs to go somewhere, all kinds of spare Z parts including a driver's fender, 2 doors a hood and a hatch, a 4 speed tranny with drive shaft, a spare head with valve cover, chrome headers, a spook, 4 totes full of small Z stuff, more metal shelving racks, a huge assortment of tools, hand and garden, and other things I haven't seen in years. If all is placed just right I can get the 96 Saturn SC2 in there in case of hail. In the yard I have a pear tree without a partrige.

I haven't flown in years. It's just too expensive with the cost of AVgas and rental. That's why I'm building a homebuilt. A half scale F4U...

Looks great! When do you anticipate first flight? I too fell in love with the Corsair from that show, and the hard-living Pappy Boyington was an idol, along with Gen. Chuck Yaeger. When my Dad was 13 during WW2, he worked at the Vought factory at Stratford, Conn. making landing gear parts for the Corsair, another connection with this plane. It's great how people can literally fall for inanimate objects of great beauty. I've seen the scale Spitfire too. Maybe some day I'll build one of those, and we'll fly into Oshkosh together in scale warbirds! I wonder if the L-24 would be too heavy for aviation usage? I also thought I'd take a vocational course in welding and metalwork to learn the basics. Best of luck to you!

Not all of my family or friends understand this. Some even call my Z "that old POS!" Their loss to not appreciate the mixing of such grace with so much power and gorgeous lines. Age has nothing to do with it.

Way off topic - but what the heck..

I built models of all the WW-II planes in the mid to late 50's. I was 10 to 15 years old then. My father had gone to Emery-Riddle Flight School in the 20's and I used to have his Bearskin Flying Gloves. (lost them somehow during my homeless days).

By the mid 60's I was in college - and got my Private Ticket at Lane Aviation, Port Columbus International Air Port. Loved learning how to fly, and for the first few years it was affordable.

By the late 60's early 70's I was in the Air Force - and making something like $350.00 per month - the cost of private planes was just too high and I have to admit that having been there and done that, I wasn't as motivated as I used to be. A few friends had planes and I'd fly with them every one-in-awhile.

Funny thing was, by the mid 70's, 80's and 90's I was working on engineering programs for the F-14, F-16, AV8-B, F-18, F-22..(among other things).

By the 90's I was getting old, eyes going South and problems with my heart... so I was grounded for good.

Nonetheless, like you guys - I still love to see the war birds from WW-II. Personally I'd like to have an ME-109 or P-51... but it doesn't look like that's going happen.

If you had told me, when I was 49 that I'd be having kids again, I would have told you that you were nuts. Lucky that we never know what life will hold for us tomorrow.

At 50 I had my first Daughter - quite a surprise - and completely different than raising the boys (now 39 and 36). My wife was 41 and more surprised than me. My Daughter has been a complete joy.....

I have a Hobby Model balsa kit of an F4U from the '40's. (still in box) It was given to me by a girlfriends father years ago. Made a few plastic models when I was a kid but my paint jobs were God awful.

There was a fellow named George Cauthin (RIP) who made the first 1/2 scale F4U 30 years ago. He worked for Skunkwerks. Who knows? You may have met him!

Carl there's always ultralights. No license needed. Several of my friends who fly them have tried to get me to build one... Something to fly in the interim. Just look out for all of the traffic in your area. It's amazing how much Central FL has grown RE controlled airspace and traffic. Sadly I think we are seeing the end of general aviation. My generation is probably the last to truly enjoy it. The last time I flew the Stearman it was $180/hr. (7yrs ago) Now with aviation insurance rates/availability being what they are I might be able to get checked out in a Cub for that much $$/hr!! (It's probably closer to $150/hr)

There's a P-51 which is available for rides in Kissimee. http://www.stallion51.com/ Even though it's $1600+ per hour it would be well worth it.

RE Wifey.. She takes her "vitamins" regularily. Believe me I've really tried the few times she's slipped and forgot her prescription.

In the front shop, an '86 Daytona Turbo Z I'm piecing back together after being gutted for various reasons, also a bunch of odd car parts, '66 Poly 318, various 2.2/2.5 Chrysler engines (turbo and non-turbo), grond effects for my Chargers, SB Chrysler heads and blocks, and lots of other stuff. In the back shop is my '72 240Z and my '89 Lebaron project, along w/ a whole bunch of car parts, mostly Chrysler engine parts and engines. I can actually have at least 6 cars under a roof between the two shops if they are cleaned out properly, and there is another where I keep the mower that could house a 7th in a pinch

I've always loved aviation. In fact, I started college as an aero engineer in the mid 70's. Even TA'd the flight sim lab. After a year I saw the writing on the wall regarding job availability/security and moved over to major in MechEngr.

Never got my pilot's license, but have flown a number of aircraft, including some aerobatics in a Citabria and an AT-6. (It was a blast!). When I was younger, I never had the money to pursue my license and now the eyes are going south.

Did fly RC planes for about 5 years, but gave it up to have a sailboat. I have only so much free time and the boat requires a lot of maintenance. In fact, the boat has suffered from neglect over the last year because of the Z restoration and home projects. I'll pay for that in many additional hours of labor next Spring. Probably something like 100 hours... (arrrgg!)

Yes! You actually get to fly it! It's a bit cramped but there are a few 6'4" pilots who can squeeze in. The cockpit is 24" wide.

There are quite a few out here in Aus, most are rusty bombs or hacked up with different engines in them. There are a few nice original ones with old grandmas still crusing behind the wheel though.

I bought mine without the roof anyway so it was only fair to finishing the hacking up properly

Anyway it's been built so I can just change over the crossmember and a RB26/RB30 will bolt straight in with only a gearbox mount and tailshaft mods.

I bet you wouldn't complain if it had the RB motor in it.

Julio, Ttiger and Steve....Much as I like to dream - I do know the rules of life, and although I'll never admit it, my wife will likely get "her" garage space back... at least for the winter months.

My garage isn't insulated, so the likelhood of me doing any work is pretty slim...(see I've justified it already!!)

My garage is 42' by 24', the doors are oversize 18' in front and the rear is 16'. When the garage was empty of junk - I could easily get 7 cars in... But it was actually planned to be a 4 car garage. The 18' doors were intended to allow a couple extra feet between the cars...

You may have told this before, and I don't want to hijack the thread, but how'd you score the BRE Baja Z? What's the story behind how / where you found it, what condition, etc.

It's long been a dream of mine to own a significant racing vehicle with provenance (primarily a classic F1, IndyCar or 60's era slingshot dragster), so I am curious!

Long Story Made As Short As Possible:
I had been a fan of Peter Brock's designs since he pinned the Cobra Daytona Coupe. That admiration was farthered when I found out that he had pinned the original design at GM for the Corvette StingRay in 1957.

When he turned up with his own Racing Team/Shop BRE in California - I started following DATSUN in both SCCA and Off-Road events. Of course when I bought my first 240-Z in March of 1970 - BRE was already preparing a Z for C-Production

I knew that BRE had prepared 2 Datsun 240-Z's for SCCA's C-Production and that BRE had prepared one 240-Z for the Baja.

I knew that the #46 Car had been totalled, and that the #3 Car was restored and entered in Vintage Racing events... but was always keeping my eye out for the Baja Z. I thought that with the Internet sooner or later I'd hear something, from someone.

In 1998 Les Cannaday and I were discussing the beautiful restoration of the #3 C-Production car that Gerald Mason and his son had done, when the subject of the BRE Baja Z that Peter had built and drove himself came up. We were at the Induction Ceremony for Mr. K's induction to the Automobile Hall of Fame, standing around talking when one of the early Salesmanagers for DATSUN USA came up and joined the conversation. He remembered the Baja Z - and had helped Peter sell it when BRE shut its doors. He remembered that a Doctor had bought the car in the L.A. area - but couldn't remember his name. He said he'd check his files.. and get back with us.

Les and I kept looking, asking anyone that had been a Datsun racer if they knew anyone etc etc.

Les called me one night - to tell me that he had found the Baja Z. I thought he was calling to razz me and gloat... as good friends will do as the occasion calls for... Instead he was calling to tell me that his shop was completely FULL, and he was behind on too many customer projects - - Sooo if I wanted the car, he'd put me in touch with the owner. He did that, and he went to pick the car up for me and had it at his shop, to get it ready for it's trip to Florida...

We both looked actively for the Baja Z for several years - and in the end it found Les when the owner contacted him about selling it.

A side story as well - When Les called to tell me the car was for sale - and told me he'd put me in touch with the owner - I turned to my wife and said; " hey honey, do you have any cash?".. She said; "what for?"... I replied that Les had found the BRE Baja Z, and if I wanted it I needed to send a cashiers check to California the next day. She said; " yes, sure.. just tell me who to have it made out to and for now much, I'll stop by the bank in the morning".

I still haven't given her cash back.... so around here we refer to it as Vicki's Z.

It was actually in pretty good condition - only 13K original miles and completely rust free. The original owner had painted it Silver, put a stock interior back in it, put the stock gas tank back on - but left all the competition parts in place. He put a stock hood, and bumpers back on - to make it a street sleeper. He raced for a year, then street raced it for a couple more before storing it away..

The restoration took me about four years total... had to find the original CIBIE Super Oscars, had to duplicate the 26 gallon fuel cell, had to find the American LeMan's wheels - all of which the original owner didn't keep... they just took time and money.. Other than that, it was just a matter of rebuilding everything. Peter and Gayle were most helpful by sending photos and spec's from his personal archives.

I have to say that finding it, restoring it and owning it are for me - the pinnacle of Z Car-doom. The Baja and off road racing was Peter's favorite form of competition, the Baja Z is one of only two BRE Z's left in existence and it is the only one that Peter drove himself. Plus it is just unique enough to be really fun... one of a kind piece of Datsun Z History..

Currently there's a CSP311 and a Z31 2+2 Turbo. Hoping to get the Z31 done and back on the road in the next couple of weeks so I can get an S30 or C110 in its place.

Finally took 3 days to sell off a bunch of wood working tools (huge drill press, Grizzly table saw, Ryobi router table and a B&D Radial arm saw) Cleaned everything up and built a few shelves, tossed a bunch of crap, gave away my 300ZX B/W T-5 tranny and 79' ZX 5-speed and a few other things and found enough room to slide the 260Z in the garage, FINALLY!!

There's just no way in Hell that I'm leaving the 70' outside this winter when I start working on the 74'. I'll pull the 70 out on nice days when I got body work on the 260Z but other than that, it'll sit in a corner.

As you can tell from the pictures, Anything that can fit on the wall is shelved, nailed and bolted to the wall and out of the way. Parts on one side and tools on the other. It's cramped but it works.

My garage construction project began in earnest last fall, continued with the electrical this past winter, and ended with interior / exterior trim etc. this summer. Well, after spending all it's time in the garage, the 240 got moved to driveway, for the next week. I sold my X1/9 this past summer, for a "big" Fiat. Currently my Fiat 850 spyder and a new addition, a 1989 Ferrari 328. So that is what bumped the z outside. The Fiat goes to the warehouse next week, and the z goes back in the garage with the 328.
Daily drivers, 04 Grand Cherokee and 90 Cherokee remain out in the snow and weather all year, until I can build a shop behind the house.

By the way, after having the Ferrari for a bit, it has made me appreciate my 240z even more. I really thought I would start to lose interest, not true. I thought I would sell it, but I hope I don't have to.
Folks, keep those 240z's, they are very impressive sports car. If you don't have one yet......GET ONE NOW.

I've only got a single-wide garage and with Z parts all over and what not, I don't have room to put the car in.....even when I could put it in, I couldn't open the doors on the car.

So the 1972 240Z is in the driveway, the 1985 Audi 4000 Quattro (once I fix the clutch) will be parked on the grass, the 1973 Ford F250 is on the side of the house (and for sale), and the 1969 Volvo 1800S is under the tent in the back yard waiting for me to get $$ to paint it and put it back together.

Just in time for the predicted 4 degrees F low expected this coming Monday. I'm hoping to get some car projects done this winter, and this will sure make it easier crawling around on the floor.

2008 GTM also from Factory five. 400HP LS1 in the back with a Porsche transaxle even futher back. The GTM is 42 inches at the roof top. Crazy short, 4 inches shorter than a Ferrari 430 (had them side by side at a rally for charity). 2300 lbs 400 hp scary fast.

Woke up this morning and the temp was 7 below. I have cable heat in the garage floor. I keep the garage at 50 all winter long. Just warm enough to wear jeans and a flannel and still feel comfortable. Still hurts like he** when you bang a knuckle though
