    Default My Z Build

after thinking. i donti have a official build thread for me. until now =D

The donor car. salvage title and out of state. floor boards where gone and interior was infested with rats. the car had more rust than i wanted to deal with it even smell seemed deadly.

than a 280z popped up for sale and it was in pretty good shape for only 100bux. clean title and pretty rust free.

some goodies that i got for the car

some of the work thus far.

That 280Z body looks like a good find, especially for $100! A much better starting point than a rat infested 280ZX.

What type of material/substance is that you used on the dash?

the blue stuff is just soft styrofoam. than i used body filler to full the cracks and the missing chunk. the filler came in a blue canister its suppose to be half the weight of bondo. after that i put a layer of woven fiberglass to make sure the cracks dont reform. i dont like the vinyl paint though its way to glossy. thought it tone down once it dried but it barely did.

I don't know if you've seen this post on dash repair already, but there are some good product recommendations judging by the the end results.

I think im going to give that paint he used a try. the texture came out nice. i think they miss labeled the can i bought because that **** was glossy as hell for flat black. as far as material, i just used what i had. i have alot of fiberglass weave that my brother bought to "repair a boat" he bought.

hard to say. Just by looking at it, I would not put any stock in that comparison. But can you bounce the car. The old bounce trick will tell you something. Get it bouncing and then stop, and it should stop immediately. If it does, then the shocks still have some damping left in them.

i looked at the spring gap in the rear and its still has a good gap. its easy to bounce the rear compared to the front. i guess the rear strut mounts sit lower on a 240. maybe i can make some 1inch shims to raise it in the rear. and cut half a coil in the front to bring it down about an inch in front.

    Nice looking engine bay!!

I just noticed that it appears the reason it turned out so glossy on the dash is b/t the coats of paint are way too thick. You need to do many light coats not fewer wet coats. If I were trying to replicate the dash finish, I would use satin or semi-gloss and maybe shoot 5-8 extremely light coats. Dust coats at first. I don't think you ever want to see a wet coat as you see in the previous photos.
