Default 240z Gas Caps are Outrageous! Locking?

Why, why, why? $60+ for a simple OEM gas cap for a 1972 240Z! My after market locking one is 10 years old & really hard to open now. Can't seem to find another locking one at all. Any source for the locking type now? Photo is what I have now with locking mechanism sticking to where Iím worried the key will break.

I read that the BMW 1600 gas cap would work. I bought one, but it didn't fit. I haven't heard of any other alternatives.

Yeah, I could get an OEM for $60. But I really want a locking one for security. Some of my neighbors may not like the roar of my Chevy 350 V8 I run with duel Supertrapps & do something evil like sugar or water.

traveling man, if he dies not bite on that, let me know. Does it have that purdy cadmium finish on it? Mine is quite dull and ugly now.

you can always take it to a locksmith who gives a damn and can refresh your lock and cut new keys.

In the interim, spray a lot of PB blaster into the lock to flush and turn it for a few min then spray some lithium grease in it.
There is scarcely anything in the world that some man cannot make a little worse, and sell a little more cheaply.
The person who buys on price alone is this man's lawful prey.

Maybe you can take it to an old time locksmith and they can refresh the mechanisms.

Two words..............."Truck Stop"....................Pre '74 cars have a diesel style filler neck as does any vehicle not covered by the unleaded gas federal mandate. Matter of fact, my Bobcat fuel cap and hydraulic reservoir cap both fit my '73Z.

I think the fact that you have to worry about the neighbors screwing with your stuff is more of an issue than the car living outside. My neighbors and I watch each others backs like hawks, if anything happens at the ranch while I'm not around my phone will be ringing off the preverbal hook. Likewise, if I see something strange going on in the hood, I put my boots on and go check it out. Must be in an apartment complex where everyone "minds their own business" a pity really.

I suspect other reasons for mentioning "roar of my Chevy 350 V8 I run with duel ('dual'?) Supertrapps" besides the concern about vandalism but...I'll be nice....

My Z has only a 10 inch glass pack at the end of the 2 inch pipe that starts at the header, it is loud. But I drive with respect in populated areas. Perhaps respect is the key.

I have had to use locksmiths on more than one occassion. No offence to you but I had one that changed out my car lock tumblers to one key when the ignition, doors and hatch all were different. I figured if he could do that a gas cap would be a piece of cake. $3 that would be a deal but I suspect you would have to pay more.

Great news for those who love locking gas caps: I have 10 plus caps brand new in the plastic with keys. I will sell them for $25 per cap plus a modest shipping cost. The shipping will be cheap because I will use an envelope. Fire me a PM if you want one. All I need is your address and you can send me a check or cash, if you perfer PayPal I will ask for $30 plus shipping. Paypal fees tick me off.

Cool! Could you post a pic of a cap for a 240? Thanks for all your suggestions.
And yes, unfortunately I must keep the Z outside. Wish I could keep them all inside for sure as the weather is taking its toll.

I live in a small hood w/ mostly good neighbors but a few bad apples. I just had my mailbox bashed a couple months ago for no good reason. I haven't knowingly ticked anyone off but feel I need to take precautions & do simple things to keep my cars safe.

I have the same locking cap as OP! I also have the original cap but use the locking one as it seems to fit tighter so I don't get spills down the side of the car.

I will post up a picture of my collection of brand new caps and will sell them to whoever wants them. Paypal ok as long as it is the "personal transfer" as mentioned in the post above.

They are not, it is just packaging. Some are in clear packages and some in boxes.
