    Default 71 Hatch strut

Can I or should I put 2 shock struts on the hatch? 1 on each side. I saw other posts on replacement struts, but I didn't see any on putting 2 struts on. Any info. 71 Thank you very much, TimsZ

Why go through the trouble of installing two new struts, when you can get a single universal strut that works great at a local parts store? I've heard of people putting two struts on the 240z, and although it can be done, it is more power than needed to lift the hatch, possibly making it more of a struggle to close. Some members on here have done that before, and will eventually chime in with a response.

Not sure is you have Pep Boys around you, but they stock a strut that will work.

I tried it. The downsides are, getting a mounting bracket from another Z, one from a 240 will be backward for the passenger side so placement will be a little off from the other side. Placement is critical for full extentsion & compression. Drill holes and make a bracket to mount on the hatch. The plastic trim will need to be trimmed to fit. The 240Z struts have more pressure than the 260/280, installed it is very hard to close and rises so fast you have to watch it. It was all removed after the first few tries and went back to stock.

The reason for wanting to try 2 was that the bracket came un-welded from the body, upon examination only 1 1/2 spot welds were there instead of 4. I have seen several posts of this happening on the late 73's.

This is what happened to me, so try if you want to.
