I'm about to install a ZX distributor in a '72 240Z and was reading that I need a ZX coil also. Is there one that's nicer to the old tachometer in my car or does it matter?
Thanks for any replies,
Cliff

Would a Flame Thrower like you have on your '77 be a good one?
Like this one with the lowest ohm 0.6, http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/p...m=flamethrower

It works fine but the chrome rusted. Maybe get black.

I have a brand new stock replacement that I will never use that I will just about give away if you are interested. I ran a flamethrower with mine

You mean that's some kind of "There is scarcely anything in the world that some man cannot make a little worse, and sell a little more cheaply.", chrome?
Thanks Blue. I watched Old School last night, thought of you and L'dOL when Frank the Tank screamed "Blue!, you're my boy!"

I'm sorry for posting so many questions on this but I can't find an answer about the Ohms needed for the Flamethrower coil. Do I want the higher Ohms or the lower Ohms for a 240Z with the ZX distributor. They go from 3 Ohms to 0.6 Ohms.
Thanks for the help,
Cliff

If you want to match the Nissan system specs. then about 08. - 1.0 is the range. You want to match the coil's resistance with the module's. Lower resistance might give a stronger spark but it will put more heat in to the ignition system since total resistance will be lower. Hotter coil and hotter module. There's probably room in the Nissan engineer's design safety margin for lower resistance. Your dice.

I believe Zed is right and you want around 1 ohm. My coil was for the stock ZX dizzy. I thought my flamethrower was giving me fits and I bought an OEM coil to troubleshoot. The problem was my carbs and I didn't need the coil at all.
No tach issues

77 EFI, Tach and 81 distributor all get along well.

You guys are great!
I went to check the junkyard distributor once more before I put it in. Took the vacuum advance dash pot set screw loose to see how easy it would push back and forth. Found a BB. Damn! I was already primed for auto maintenance too, I gave it a nice spa treatment instead. It was drinking wax like I was drinking beer. We both had a good time.

I am using a stock distributor for a 79 ZX and it works great. You are already bumping the voltage up dramatically from the points system, so the "performance" coils are not necessary.
Just my 2 cents...

I'm needing YOUR DICE, if it were your's what would you buy? 0.6 ohms, 1.5 ohms or 3.0 ohms? Amazon.com: pertronix coil
Mr Moore you make a good point. I was typing when you posted.

I ran a Crane PS20 on mine, after my hardly used Flamethrower died.
I tend to stick with stock parts on the highly engineered systems that contain multiple pieces, so I probably would have went to RockAuto and got a decent brand stock coil. Although in this case, I might use an E-core 300ZX ignition coil instead. ~1.0 ohms, so the module sees no difference, but with the newer, more robust E-core coil design technology. Although the oil-filled coils seem to last just fine, so who knows.
But, with your finding of a BB, you're kind of at a crossroad(s?). You can fix or replace the distributor breaker plate so that you can use the ZX distributor and module, or you could get a 280Z electronic distributor (like on your 77) and go with the GM HEI module, and an external HEI coil.
More stuff to think about. Maybe you'll get lucky and the BB came out with no other damage.

After some reading, I get the E-Core technology Zed Head suggest and the tried and true experience of Arne. It's 1.4 ohms too.
Crane Cams PS20 Performance Coil features performance ignition coils. They feature Crane's special E-core design, which loses less voltage, so more spark gets to the plugs. The coils also have large-gauge wire windings for maximum spark current and voltage, with better heat dissipation at high rpm. An insulated connector and high-tension tower protect against high-voltage arcin. They are solid-epoxy encapsulated for shock and vibration protection. These coils are specially designed for use with capacitive discharge (CD) ignition systems

I got lucky with the remanufactured distributor from amazon.com. From the spread sheet Walter Moore put together it's one of the better ones. Thank you Mr Moore. http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/e...reference.html

I have an MSD Blaster II Coil that I use with a 280ZX Distributor and it works great.
