Just measured my Series I:
The metal base is positioned 0.5" vertically below the ss metal window trim, and 27.25" anterior to the rear lip of the door skin horizontally.

Good question...The 1971 Series 1 owners manual (page 24) recommends '95 and higher'. From that it would appear the higher, the better, and that of course depends on local availability....
