Online Z Car registry

Many of you have already noticed that I started an online Z car registry using a public spreadsheet called EditGrid. It can be found here:

The good news is that anyone can add or update this list at any time. The bad news is that anyone can update this list at any time. I just had to roll it back to an older revision; it looks like someone might have tried to sort the list and it didn't work properly. I knew there was a problem because my VIN no longer was right; it had shifted in the list. I just added instructions at the top to help prevent that problem in the future.

I apologize for any inconvenience this will cause; some recent entries may be lost. Those who have already entered data may want to verify that it is still correct. All previous revisions should be available so it's always possible to view old data.

Mike, do you want just our cars, or would you like us to post cars that we know of (i.e. parted out cars/shells, etc.), assuming we have a good amount of info?

I say the more the better. The only question would be how to differentiate such cars. I suppose for now just use "reported by zbane" for the "Member" field. We could always create a separate sheet for them in the future.

I added a couple cars that I know of that should be considered DOA or Parts cars, including the city located, in the comment/misc area. This might help people search for parts in their area.

Mike, In the future when a separate sheet is made for parts cars and such, it would be nice to include a column for engines. I have a few spares and I'm sure many others do also. It would be interesting to see if a matching engine turns up for someone's car. Just a thought.

Done. I just added an extra tab called "Spare Engines" and columns for Block, Block Serial #, and Head, i.e.,

L24, 058003, E88

Any other columns you can think of?

On a side note, thanks to everyone who's entered data. Someone even managed to hide the first rows on the 240Z page. I'm not sure if that was intended so I undid it and "froze" them instead so that you'll always be able to see the instructions and column headers.

So far no one has added anything to the "Other S30" page but I just renamed it to "Other S30/S31". I certainly don't want to offend anyone by leaving them out. I'd love to see cars from around the world included.

Please, anyone, feel free to make changes like this yourself as warranted. As long as no information is lost it doesn't bother me. I would like to limit it to Z cars, however.

I havent been back to this registry in quite a while but it appears the data is screwed up again. Some how none of the columns match for my car anymore.

OK, so I added my car to the registry. Here's an oddity, my car a 1972 240Z s/n HLS30-91415 lands smack in the middle of the 1973 cars, yet its build date of 07/72 clearly places it amongst the 1072 cars. I wonder what the delay was between the build date and the serial number.

See the prior two posts. The spreadsheet is currently messed up again, so the data is not correct. Your VIN HLS30-91415 falls in the range for 7/72 cars on the Zhome registry, which is not directly user editable.

You are right--this is incorrect. The 73 cars do not show up until September of that year. My build date is after yours (August)--and it's still listed as an 72 model.

Well, according to Carl's website (zhome), the last '72 built was -100155 in 8/72. Series IV cars (1973) start at s/n -120000.

There are a number of cars in the registry with sub-120000 vins listed as '73's.

Actually, the Zhome site shows HLS30-100262 as the last 72 model reported. There may be others that Carl knows of with VINs later than that, but not on the list.

There are three cars listed as 73 models with VINs below 120000 (which is when Nissan says the 1973 model year VIN range began). All are listed as being located in Australia or New Zealand. The HS30 model was sold in those markets, not the HLS30 model. One of the VINs on the list says it is a HS30 and one is a partial VIN number - 11955?. That makes all three of these reported VINs questionable in my opinion.

Also, I'm not sure why you posted a picture of your door tag. I don't think anyone was questioning the accuracy of the VIN/build date you stated. I think Rich1 was just agreeing that Mike W's spreadsheet data was incorrect in his opinion.

I just restored the on-line spreadsheet to 8/29/10. This was the first correct version I could find in the history.

If you have made changes recently you might want to make sure they are in there.

You can save a copy for yourself by clicking on File>Export As> (choose your format here. I chose .xls because I have excel installed but you could choose .csv and open it in notepad.)

I am kind of confused by the other entries. Mine is a 4/77 car with VIN 384896, yet there is a 3/77 car with VIN 385737 and a 6/77 car with 381610.

This sort of thing has happened a number of times over the past few years to the 240Z tab. I hope someone has a back up.

Unfortunately, I think even the back up's are corrupted. It was a good plan, but when people who did not know what they were doing started messing with sorting it, etc. it became a big, inaccurate mess.

The original link works again, but unfortunately someone messed up the data again in the 280 section. The VIN column is shifted.

Yeah, a while back I thought it was lost too. Then I started downloading backups to my desktop and found a restore feature on the website itself. Easy to restore but we lose any good changes since our last good backup.

I moved #979 to the correct spot. Just needed to insert a new row. Can you verify the build date though? 08/70 seems awfully late for such a low vin#.

Has anyone checked Mike's registry lately? This Bring a Trailer post has a link to it. I followed the link and noticed that the names on the spreadsheet have been sorted alphabetically, but the other columns are still in vin order. My #4642 now has someone else's name next to it and my name is next to someone's '72. I don't know if this can be resolved or not. This registry is such a nice tool. I hate to see it corrupted.

Having a registry seemed like such a good idea at the time but the fact is that it was just a public spreadsheet that anyone could edit, and worse, break either unintentionally or not. It would have been much better to have a form that people could fill out and submit their own data to a list that others could only read and not modify. I'd hoped that this site could offer a feature like that but however it's done it would require someone with web development experience which I don't have. Perhaps there are better tools out there these days that would make something like this easier.

I don't have anything newer than that date, but that version was fairly recent. I just saved the file onto my computer, so if it ever gets lost hit me up. I also need to add the last '73 I bought to the list.

I'd hoped that this site could offer a feature like that but however it's done it would require someone with web development experience which I don't have. Perhaps there are better tools out there these days that would make something like this easier.

I believe one could create a form that feeds a spreadsheet in Google Apps. Might be able to keep the actual spreadsheet locked, only accepting changes from the form.

That link worked this morning for me I didn't see the tabs at the bottom at first as they were black.
I feel like an idiot uploading this copy of the z car registry because I can't figure out the date on it. It does have the tabs across the bottom so has a fair amount of data. I don't know if the attached is copyrighted. Moderators, save my ass if this is copyrighted and delete it. Thanks!

I've been researching some VIN's and tried to load the Z Car Registry from Edit Grid. From the previous discussion here, it sounds like Edit Grid may be down? I was able to get the information I needed from the saved copies supplied above, but wondered if there are any status updates to the registry? This has certainly been a valuable tool.
