Made in the '70s and '80s by several different companies. They will all be 14" wheels ranging from 5.5" to 7" wide. None of them are still made anymore, so your only option is to watch for a used set that can be cleaned up nicely. Try craigslist for starters.

These are "Western" wheels. I have them on my '76 and they do look good...

Western is only one makers of this 'turbine' style wheel. They were also made by Superior, ET and others. Every brand differed slightly, in the width and number of spokes. Lots were made, so do a bit of hunting, they are out there.

There are several examples of wheels for our cars, including some Western wheels of this type on the first page. I didn't review the whole thread but I remember more "turbine" - style wheels are pictured. I have similar wheels on my parts car, but they'd need to be cleaned up. I'll try and get some photos tomorrow. Gary D.

Just so you know, the Westerns are 30 spokers

when you do find some, you can brighten them up like i did by sandblasting with glass beads.
it takes off the oxidized aluminum and leaves kind of a matte gray surface.
but doesn't take off to much and weaken the rims.
i think you can also use a walnut media to clean them up, but i found glass beads were cheaper (at least here they were).
the picture is before they were blasted, about 2 years ago, next time i get home I'll take some pictures and post what they look like. (might be a while though)

Great choice of wheels! I will keep my eyes open for you with respect to getting a set. They are around.
There are several different versions of them out there. Here's a picture of a set of Western (I think they are the "Cyclone" or "Cyclone II", and have 30 'spokes'). These are 14 X 5.5 - I've just removed them from my '71 & will be putting new rubber on them to use on my '72 driver, that is of course after I clean them up and detail them with some black paint between the vanes.... Anyway, in your search, you can be assured that the one pictured here is a Western manufacture (likely about 25+ years ago).

....now, if I could only decide the size and brand of the new tires....

They are nice! I've got the same style on mine (westerns) but a slightly different style. They had been painted an orange which was pealing off all over the place so I ended up taking a wire wheel to them to get the old paint off, getting them sandblasting then painted them with PPG. I'd check Craigslist and check Ebay as they are on there every so often.

Another 'kinda nice' variant of these rims would be the turbine-style rims that came on the Datsun 200SX (80-83).

14x5.5, I think, and there were variants with 16 spokes and 32 spokes.....

Everytime I go by one of those MPH Rader signs in a School Zone, which shows how fast your going, the Rader speed and the Speedo seam to match up

215/60/R14's are hard to find in H rated speed which is good up to 138MPH
but you can find them in S and T rated easy though.
Seems like 225/60/14 is more popular which is the size I going to use on the rears.

Thanks, I think the brand of these wheels were Western as that's what the original center caps said on them and they aren't made any more. It's pretty easy (and fun) to restore these old wheels and make them look new again. Ebay and Craigslist are again probably the best places to look along with posting your question on other sites and you might be surprised to find a set in your area. I bought the center caps along with the "Z" logo from MSA. Just make sure you get the right size caps! I've also seen this same set listed on Ebay before. http://www.thezstore.com/page/TZS/CTGY/WCC

American Racing also sells this same style in their "vintage collection" of old style wheels which is pretty cool. The picture on their site shows them in a 5 lug, but would imagine they sell them in 4 too. http://americanracing.com/wheels/det...heel&section=V

(I must say that the CD version of the catalog takes away the joy of picking up a paper catalog and paging through it - I'm 'old school', huh?) Now there is actually a "choice" available to me.
This site is great for that. The willingness to share information has in just two days likely set Darbji up with a set of wheels, and found me some center caps for mine (not to mention the tire discussion). I think I will soon start another thread on suggestions for restoring or refreshing a set of these. Several of us can now probably benefit from your suggestions on cleaning, polishing and detailing! I'll try to post something soon on that (new thread).

Friar-Tuck- Check DHL freight. I just had a set of steel rims shipped to me by them for a fraction of what USPS or UPS was demanding... From NJ to PA. Also had them carry an E-88 head to me from Michigan for $35.00.... most cost effective shipper that I've found, especially if you 'have an account' with them.

If I recal I saw a set on Ebay some where and they were correct 10 spokers

I don't see a problem DeesZ with 5.5" width rim for the tires.
Come to think of it I don't know width of mine but was told they are inset rims.
My rims are Per Spec also known as Performance Specialties and member Goose52 in SoCal hipped me to 'em saying they were dealer installed on his Z.
My friend Shawn who works at the machine shop which rebuilt my engine in the past said he used to see them on 240z and 260z's as a dealer installed option aswell (around this area anyway).
But to see them on a 280z he said was cool

The Rims in the 1st photo you posted have circles in the center and has Spokes that arch smoothly all the way to the edge just like the pics in post #23 and #25 (seen below).
Where as the ones in Friar-Tuck's photo have spokes which stop at a Lip Ring on the edge of the rim with no circle in the middle (also seen below).
Also note how the Spokes extend slightly out from center then cut sharply at an angle to the outside of the rim.

There are another type of wheels in existance I have fallen in love with but I have no idea how to describe them. I was driving through good old Cedar Lake, IN when I saw a 280ZX parked in some dudes front yard. I wipped my Z around and stopped at the guys house to talk to him. It wasn't in great shape but it was still a Z and I hadn't seen one in person since I bought mine. Anyway, I digress. The wheels he had were amazing (although, he would not sell them to me). Maybe I'll go back and take some pictures if I can catch him home. But I still think I am leaning towards those turbine wheels. I love them on the Delorean, and although they are totally different cars, I would love them on the Z. Thanks again for the input and information. I don't know where I would be without you guys.

i have found a set of those turbine wheels off of a z, plan on having bead blasted and painted. i have not decided on the color yet, but leaning towards black or maybe silver since my car is going to be red one day. they do look good, but the spindle cap sticking out on the front wheels doesn't look good imo,is there anything to go over that?

the 280ZX had spindle cup that don't stick out as far. They were on my 6-spoke ZX wheels. You may be able to use those. But on my Z, I cut off only the ends and glued them to the wheels for a flat look. The downside is that the spare will need the longer cap, or you need to carry one, in case you need to put the spare on the front. Otherwise the spare has a flat cap too.

Only 4 luggers at all I've seen was a NICE looking set of a previously posted style in a Z bolt pattern advertised for a VW.

They appear to be 5.5x14, assuming I read the tire information correctly. They are currently shod with p215/70r14 tires, though they are definitely shot.

Junk/scrap yard. As I was talking to the owner about these two, he told me that just last week he sold a complete 280z. When asked about the condition of this now gone item, he said the buyer was able to start it up and drive it away.

He is many Zs and many parts so he said he would do his part....but to date she has not contacted me or him about the wheels. They are exactly the ones she wanted, they are on a 280Z and they have 32 fins like Steve pointed out. The seller Lenny is a nice guy, president of the local Z club and willing to sell what more can she ask for?

I was watching Back to the Future yesterday and I think she should put her Delorean wheels on her Z. Just get four fronts and have her hubs and axles reworked for the bolt pattern if different and if the backspacing is close enough. Or use a full set then it will have that shelby daytona coupe look mmm......nice!

Darbji, let us know how the search is going.

They might make Stephen happy at first glance, since they ARE the style that Darb is after. But they are also the wrong bolt pattern and won't fit a Z. Unlike the early four-lug Mustangs and Falcons which used the same 4-4.5" pattern as our Zs, the later Pinto/Mustang II cars used a 4-4.25" pattern instead.

Sorry about that. I knew that the earlier Mustangs had a 4x114.3mm lug pattern and I assumed that all of the four-lug Mustangs were the same pattern.
