That's amazing! That only took "weeks"???
I didn't know the '76 had a 4 wire drivers side door switch, my 74 has 3. In all my searching for a replacement, I never saw a 4 wire version.
well, after weeks of working on it, i'm finally done. and you can reap the benefits of all my work! below i've made available my new, full-color version of the 1976 280z wiring diagram. it is vector-based, so it can be blown up as big as you'd like without losing legibility. the text is copyable and searchable.
i will warn you, i'm 110% sure that there are errors. you get a gold star if you point them out to me. a wire or object in hot pink denotes that i'm not sure of the true color of the item. i'll post updated versions on this thread as needed, so look at the most recent reply for the newest download.
enjoy!

edit: i thought i'd add an illustration that i just finished for Tim280z of his car. take a look at the thumb below...

thank youi hope it helps everyone as much as drawing it has helped me.
Weeks and weeks! Wow that is hard job, you have to sell it on ebay and make money out of it, your job is awesome, and you deserve the money.
I just bought a good full color laminated wiring diagram (14'' X 25") for $19, and that is for my 72 zcar (loved the colored diagram)
Thanks for sharing
Ronaldo
What program did you make the diagram with? It looks great.
Mike
Huge thanks for all your hard work on this! Now my tired old eyes won't have the strain to read a tiny little diagram in the service manual![]()
Datsun 280Z purchased new in 1977: $8088
Having my 5 year old Son (in 1995) claim it as "Devin's car": PRICELESS
Hello. I'm new here but I really could have used this two weeks ago. It looks fantastic, and I second the comment about eye strain. Mine are still sore from trying to figure out how the mechanical voltage regulator was wired.
The color coding is great, and you've gone better than the FSM also by adding color to the fusible links. But I see that you show two red links under the two covers instead of two brown ones. The labeling on the side of my 76 fusible link holders definitely says B, G, and two Br, and the manual says that B, G and Br are used also (page BE-6).
I've seen some discussion around the internet that maybe the brown is really red and you should just use red ones, but my reading leads me to believe that the brown links are real, at 0.3 mm ^2 in size, just not used on many models and not as readily available as the other ones.
Can anyone comment on this? And thanks again for the diagram and I'm glad I have the car it comes from.
Bob
Well, maybe that's how the red/brown confusion started. Nissan is giving out new red for old brown. Was there wire size information with the links? I have seen information on the web that shows the red links as being bigger than 0.3 mm^2. The atlanticz page for instance (although their diagram shows orange for the 76) - http://www.atlanticz.ca/zclub/techti...nks/index.html . The red seems designed for a much bigger load than the brown, based on wire size alone. If so, the red won't give the protection the brown was designed for.
I will have to go down to Nissan and see what they have for links. Maybe they'll let me measure some wires.
Thanks for the reply and the work on the schematic. It would make a cool poster for a garage or den.
i threw out the packages a while back, but here's some info on courtesy nissan's site: http://www.courtesyparts.com/kb_sear...utton=Go&cat=1
you could call them, they're fairly helpful.
Thanks very much. The Courtesy Nissan link seems to tell the story. Red is 0.3. Red is the new brown at Courtesy Nissan. I wonder why they did that.
But atlanticz still shows red at 0.69. So there is some dangerous information out there. If your red is not a Courtesy Nissan red you could have some burnt components. Or if you have a Courtesy Nissan 0.3 instead of red 0.69 you could have some mysterious fusible link burnouts.
Thanks again.

Thanks this will more than likely help me out down the road. The black and white ones get me confused pretty fast.
Thanks again. =)

Enigma,
When I bought my first 240Z someone had painted it a nice brown like your car. It looks good on your car and I liked it on the 240 I had.
Mike
Thanks, Saridout! I really wish you owned a '78, though!I'm really suffering because the schematic foldout has been torn out of my '78 FSM, and the schematic I printed out from the downloadable '78 FSM is missing an important sliver and is otherwise quite illegible.
If you do decide to sell the schematic, I can do high quality 17" wide roll printouts (i.e. "landscape" orientation -- 17" high by really, really wide) on my Epson SP4000 printer (sort of old, but a real trooper). The only caveat is that it is currently down, due to ink flow problems. I'm working on a modification to the printer that will fix this problem.

My last three sports cars while I still owned all three:
2001 BMW Z3 Roadster 3.0i soft/hard top (sold)
1966 Ford Mustang Coupe (sold)
1978 Datsun 280Z (enjoying very much)
have you bought the haynes manual? it's just about the crummiest haynes manual i've ever seen, but it does have the wiring diagrams in the back. also, there are a lot of similarities between the 76 wiring and the following years. though they're not identical, my color diagram could probably help you in some cases.
i'll keep your printer in mind, thanks![]()
I wonder how close the 76 diagram is to a 75?
Thanks for sharing all your hard work!!!
Sariout, Thank you very much. This diagram is awesome! You just saved me a trip to the mechanic..
