Just bought my dream car!

A long time ago I spotted a sexy beast of a car across the road from my apartment. Turned out it was a z... from that moment on I was sold. I used to be a '69 Mach 1 Mustang girl, but now I don't think I will ever find a car I like more than the old z's.

I have just purchased dream car - she's gorgeous. 1975 260z in electric blue.

The only thing is, now that I have her I am paranoid about losing her. She's been in my ownership for one day, but I keep reading on these forums about people losing their cars to rust. I am sure my old girl must have a fair bit.

Would love any advice on preventing it.
When I make loads of $$ would love to do a rotisserie as I have seen car owners on here do, but at the moment, well, money doesn't grow on trees!

Also, I don't have anywhere to dry store her, so off to buy a cover. Hopefully that will suffice. Can't believe I'm thinking I should move out the house I adore so she can have a garage. *Pathetic.

Wow she's beautiful, named her yet ? Get a car cover from Motor Sport Auto.com . They have the ones that repel water and keep moisture and mold from between the cover and car paint. If you really want a garage keep your home and get a barn shaped storage thing, like sic you see in backyards, and park your Z in that

Take your time and inspect your new car for rust.

Where to look? Everywhere. Make a chart and grade how bad and what size each area is.

Get the car on a lift, remove carpets, or anything that gets in the way (like the cowl). An awl or screwdriver can be used to find weak spots in frame rails, floors, under the doors, etc.

Then develop a plan to remove and repair each spot.

In the mean time keep it as dry as possible (rent a storage spot, cover with a breathable cover) and keep it away from any salt covered roads.

Let us know what you find in your "rust" inspection.

There isn't anyone on this forum who hasn't had to deal with this problem, so you're not alone.

Hi Z GRRL.Welcome.Your new toy looks stunning and well worth preserving. Where in NZ are you.? There are quite a number of Zedophiles old and new in NZ.Old and new cars ,and people.My wife and I own a 240z, and are mature!!!!.There are numerous people in the Zclub who would be willing to assist you. The GRRR in ZGRRRL sounds like a growl; ZGRRRL wouldn't make a
bad name for the car if the exhaust system emits that sound!!
We've never owned a 2+2, but I have to admit that one really
stands out. A real "keeper."

The car cover quoted above is an excellent choice, and in fact would
be a good first step until you could save enough $$$$$ for a shelter.
About $400-500 US for a 12'x20'. "Cover-It" (the brand name) is the
best I have found. Ours have lasted for years and being the heavier
grade, should continue. Be sure to put down a waterproof tarpaulin
on the ground to guard against ground moisture coming up and harming
the car from below. And then you could use the nice car cover you
already have for protection against dust and cobwebs while inside, or
even outside if you need to use the shelter for temporary storage of
something else.

I don't know how it is in NZ, but here, such a "garage," not being a
permanent structure, is not subject to annual property taxes!

Thanks everyone for all your advice - this is just awesome!
I bought a water resistant breathable cover, some rust converter stuff (sorry am new to all this!) and some fish oil spray. I absolutely said to hubby that I wanted to set up a marquee in the carpark to protect her, but he thinks the neighbours will not be impressed. We're apartment dwellers you see.
Yes, will def join the Auckland club as well.

As for naming her, I keep calling her sexy every time I see her (ha ha) but it's not an official name.

Am also going to phone the people at the building next door and see if I can pay to use their carpark. The things we do for our z's eh... life was simple when I was driving the company Suzuki and didn't give a rat's ass about it!

Olzed maybe it was your 240z that I saw in AK and got me going on these! :-)

at Motat back in Feb. Also at Ellerslie. Some of us are having a cruise up to Mangawhai and a lunch at a cafe there on 18th April. Bring hubby and meet other Zedders,You would be made MOST welcome even though not yet a member. Check it out under ZClub events.
We have owned our wee toy for 10 years now and would find it very hard to part with her. As you say sexy, so in my book its a her. The club has members all over, although the majority are in AK.

Oooh I like the look of those outdoor carcoons. Very pricey though, better start buying lotto tickets. My numbers are a bit annoying to be honest. We drove her through some of those roadworks last weekend 'Wash your car today', so when I came home I washed her straight away and they got annoyed at me using the hose as apparently I don't pay the water rates. *sigh. I used about 2cents worth of water!

Have done just a visual rust inspection so far - have yet to get her on a lift. Have fun rust in the centre of the floorpans on both sides, but it appears to just be surface. Also some rust underneath the back seats, not too much. She has a few small patches at the front of the bonnet and the odd speckle in the engine. I'll do what I can to tackle it until I have the budget to get her sorted professionally.

Hi ,yes it could have been my car on Mt Eden road.We stopped there for a coffee with some other people a couple of times,after a cruise to Piha, from memory..If you send your joining form ,it would'nt be approved until the next committe meeting,which is on the first Thursday of each month. If you don't make Mangawhai cruise, there is quite a bit coming up through the year.
