I often worry about this as well. During the rally we just got back from, there were about 20 cars, that were absolutely blazing around on public roads. However, I will say this. We obeyed every law inside all the city limits when we came to a town, but when we got out side, it was pedal down. Granted we hardly every saw a single car, but at times we did get held up, and some 'creative' passing took place.
I hardly ever speed out side of a track environment, but when you get a bunch of guys together, something just takes over and you throw caution to the wind. Funny how that happens.

I like an occasional thrash along a country road, when alone, but when we travel in a group on club outings, we always remind each other of our strict speed limits, and the safety of other road users. My wife always reminds me as well.![]()
On a "just sports car guys" gathering last year, some of the guys drove like idiots. Don't get me wrong, I like to carve a corner from time-to-time as much as the next guy, but not like that. I just let them go on ahead. They had to wait for us "sane" guys in the back to arrive at our destination before they could order lunch anyway!![]()

I experienced this riding motorcycles. With a couple of different clubs. There were always guys with LESS skill than I had riding faster and closer to the limits. Some with no skill at all, attempting to corner their bikes upright. Middle aged men who bought big motorcycles far beyond their abilities. Unable to recognize they needed riding lessons. Or unwilling to admit it.
Thereby endangering the entire group.
I don't ride with groups anymore. Maybe a few friends, safely spaced out.
If I misjudge a corner, enter it too fast, I don't mind wrecking myself and suffering the consequences. But I don't do it with passengers in the car or in tight packs of other cars. That's for professional drivers with roll cages and safety gear.
I guess I've gotten old.
Don't you hate it when the Twin-turbo "sprinters" get way up ahead of you, and then call on the CB for you to pick up the pace? You think to yourself, "I thought this was supposed to be a scenic cruise to a restaurant" and these people want to pretend they doing the Targa Floria? Isn't it enough that the speed limit on these twisty country roads is 55 and you're already going 55 or so, and 70+ on the straights?
It's tough being the sensible guy in a group of "sports car owners," isn't it? Apparently, if you own a "sports car" it means you have the abilities of Mario Andretti, and never look to the sides at the green blur going by...![]()

Actually, it's the cars at the back of these organized drives that 'kick-up-their-heels' so to speak. I have led a number of club drives and because the cars at the back get spaced out from the group and sometimes caught behind lights, these are the ones that are moving along at a vigorous pace.

We have found that by getting into groups or 'pods' of three or four, you can get through traffic lights, highway traffic, and such without having to use excessive speed to catch up. The problem was that the 'leaders' insist on traveling as a "club," or one large group, so they want everyone to drive fast to make it through the lights, and what looks like enough room for a bunch of cars to pull out into traffic, is really only enough for a few cars.
