Hoi Bart,
I changed mine a while back too. The right side coupling on the rack also had some play in it. You have to cut the tack weld to adjust it. Took me a while to get the pre-load right. After those two repairs, nearly all play in the steering is gone.
Any luck with your vibration?

Chas,
I found the bearings closer to home than I thought. LemmTech in Zevenaar has them also the oil seals.. Around 25/30 euro for a bearing.

Okay... I got the rear wheel bearings in ! Also replaced the prop shaft and the 2 short shafts. I didn't take pictures when changing the bearings, but here are some of the result. I've made a home made puller to get the shaft out with a 15 kg weight but it didn't came loose. After I tried almost everything, I heated up the housing with a propane torch and voila one whack and it came out instantly ! So I'd recommend anyone who is going to do this, just use heat.. to make the job easier and save alot of time.
The locking nut came of pretty easy, I used an impact wrench. First I used a chisel to whack off the flat spots on the security ring on the nut before loosening it.
I found the grease reservoir to be completely dry on both sides ! Those bearings must have been in there a long time
I found while replacing the prop shaft that the 4 bolts connecting the prop shaft flange to the differential flange where not original, but US size bolts. I found this may cause an alignment problem, Lucky I had the original metric bolts..
I also freshed up the fuel cap/housing area, there was some rust there. And put some extra sealant between the gaskets to prevent leaking of fumes.
Also a pic of the new original gearknob in the car.

After going to 3 wheel " specialists " , finally found one who found the following:
2 bent rims
and the holes will be drilled conical, so I can use conical lug nuts to center it just right.
Fingers crossed !

Well.. problem is still there...to bad
I even cleaned the inside of the wheels, so they could balance it properly.
What could be it ? It start's at 50 mph.. steering wheel wobble ( left to right )and vibration, also vibration on the chassis noticable. Could it still be the rims, or tires ? They are Dunlop..
It's driving me nuts lol , but I will keep searching for the problem.
Edit: I notice engine movement shaking the car a bit when running stationairy in the car, when parked or waiting in front of a traffic light. Not sure if this got anything to do with it. All mounts are replaced.

Could be a bump on the tire(s) itself or another issue with the tire itself, rather than the wheels.

Bart,
I thought you had it beat with the wheel runout. It could be something like a blister in the tyre that start to play up at higher speeds.
You can try my wheels. I don't have any vibrations up to 80mph. That way you can eliminate the wheels or identify it as a wheel problem. Let me know and we can arrange something.

Okay... I had another look and found a " knock '' sound in the steering housing ( rack ), when turning fast left to right on the steering wheel when parked. Als found play in the right side in the steering housing ( rack ). So I took the steering housing(rack) out for rebuild ( I guess it was never done since 1971. Hopefully this solves the problem. If not it should be the wheels or a hub that is bent I guess. I checked the brake discs and they are not warped.

Hi Bart,
The vibration problem is one hell of away to fast track your restoration.
All jokes aside. If another set of wheels (mine) don't fix it, then I have no idea what will. It can't be in the engine or gearbox because you would feel that at lower speeds in the lower gears with the same revs and you have changed just about everthing that rotates.

Hey Bart, I was just reading a blog at White Head performance and it mentioned `typical brass bushing wear``at either end of the steering rack which can cause wheel shimmy at highway speeds, perhaps this is your problemÉ FWIW
mark
If you feel it in the seat then it is coming from the drive train. Check drive shaft, half shafts, diff, mounts, etc. While cruising at highway speed when the vibration is there take it out of gear and see if it goes away or lessens.

I allready tested yesterday with the new rebuild steering rack, slight difference but not much. I also read their site, and thought that could be it, that's why I let a shop rebuild the steering rack..it had to be done anyhow.

Those vibrations / shimmy's are a PITA to find sometimes. Mine is about 95 percent gone and is one of those shimmy's that come and go. I'm just living with it for now. Went through the "rim repair" scenario etc, and nothing completely fixed it. Am curious to see what you find.

Hey Bart. I once had an annoying bouncing in my 240, and the tyre shop traced it to four poor quality tyres which were impossible to balance. The inside bead of the tyre was not true with the tread area, resulting in a tyre that moved up and down when rotated. Tyre brand FALKEN. I could have named them something more appropriate.lol
I kicked myself for buying cheap.

See if you can get a new set of American Racing Ansen Sprint wheels. They are one of the makers of the "original" dealer add on wheels (like on your car), but now they make them in 15" instead of 14". They were reasonably priced over here in the US at least.
I've had them on my Z for a number of years now and they are great.

Bart,
It sounds like you and I might have the same problem. To solve my vibration problems I put on new tires. I took it around to a few tire shops and most said the same thing: Putting new tires on it should take the shaking out of it. And it did! I was amazed!
I'm only saying this after reading so many of the above posts... as I remember, your tires are older? 2002 if I remember correctly. It might be something to consider, especially if they are older and you would be replacing them at some point anyway. Hope this helps...
SoCal-280zx
Bart, Take the wheels to a tyre speacialist and ask them to remove the tyre and check the wheel for run-out on a tyre dalancer. You can rotate it by and check it against a dial indicator or screwdriver. Something to give you an idea if its bent or out of shape. If he doesn't see any run-out, remove all the weights and let him check the balance. If the balancer reads perfect, and I mean perfect because the balancer not so accurate on a light wheel. He will need to set it up for a 12" wheel to compensate a little for no tyre.
I would then try a new set of tyres.
You are looking for another set of 14" rims so if this doesn't work you can use the new tyres on them. I think its worth the gamble, if you can test the rim first.
Goodluck

Thanks for the info/help guys. I couldn't find any 14 inch wheels for now...damn hard to find here. Today I was able to pick up 15 inch 280zx turbo wheels with the original nuts with them ( just have to put new tires on them, these have a flat spot from sitting over 10 years and are old). So this should fix my vibration problem. I will keep looking out for 14 inch wheels.
The problem with my current wheels is that 1 wheel has a different ET, the wheel is not the same as the others and it's some immitation brand, I'm not sure if it's worth fixing these, or just looking for a genuine wolfrace 14 inch set ? At least I have these 15 inch wheels for now, they don't look badI picked them up fearly cheap, the guy was quitting his Datsun hobby. He had a solid euro 280zx turbo for sale !

I'm thinking what to do, like said above it's some immitation brand, and one wheels has a different ET.. if the wheel goes on the balancer machine they use the center hole, but if the mounting is somewhere out, the rim could balance fine but it doesn't center on the axle..

Hi Doug, If I can't get them here, I will order them in the USA for sure..
It seems many brands make this kind of wheel, but the original ones seem to be the " wolfrace " brand ? I'm not sure. It's a pain anyhow to find classic car aluminium wheels in 14 inch here..

While waiting for the tires, started refurbing the turbo wheels today. I am sandblasting them, and giving them the silver finish ( no gloss ), motip wheelspray. I think it looks great..standard look, makes the wheel stand out more, then when it's polished, and I hate polishing by the way :P

Bart,
There were a few different manufacturers of the "original" dealer add on 5 slot wheels - American Racing is one of those as mentioned, I think there is a thread somewhere that lists some of the others as well.
The challenge with the 14' wheels is that no one makes them anymore so you're always stuck with used wheels and as you've seen, it's hard to know you're buying a good set

I was digging some information, and found what I think is the original color code of the car on the warranty card, if correct it should be 901 Silver.
The other number is 954, but according to zhome.com that's not a 240z color code.

Bart,
I was looking at the photos of your Z from the start of your thread again and noticed the inside of your doors are silver. So yes, the original color of your car is 901 Silver. The original warranty card for my car also has an extra number next to the date, but the 5 digits don't seem to have any meaning. I'm still working on your request.

Well... look what I got in the mailbox today:
I was indeed the first owner of the car in question. It was one of the first in Kansas City and was purchased from Overland Park Datsun. I traded in my 1969 440 RT Dodge Charger for it. Car was never wrecked. We moved in the Spring after purchase to New Rochelle \., New York. There we had to have the 3rd gear synchro repaired under warranty. That was the only mechanical issue with the car. Rust along the rocker panels soon appeared, but we had it repaired and dar fully repainted after moving back to Kansas City in 1976 then sold the car to a dealer friend of mine in Leavenworth, Kansas ROUND 1978 - 79. Guess my friend drove it until 1987 or Mr. Campbell is not the second buyer.
In New York the car was maintained by Bob Sharp Datsun. Sharp was an amazing race car driver and won the C production class of SCCA in the Z cars for many years. Hos son is Scott Sharp that races the Patron car in the Rolex series.
Hope this info helps? Regards, Bob

Only thing I have to do next week or the week after is to drop the gas tank, and replace the filler neck and fuel lines, also paint the tank. I have ordered these parts last week in the US.

Jay Leno : You know one week after the Americans have walked on the moon, the Japanese introduced this sports car, and…if you’re a car guy pretty equal. I mean walking on the moon was pretty good, but how many times you’d gonna walk on the moon? But here was an affordable sports car that had real performance and looked like it cost a lot more than it did.
Last time I still had a knocking sound when braking coming from the rear, I allready had replaced both the shoes and drums. I found that I had to clean the glide surfaces on the backing plate, and put some copper grease. No more knocking since then. So if you have this problem, your brake shoes might nog be sliding properly on the backing plate.

Finally made some time to take the gas tank out and replace all the fuel lines including the filler neck. Cleaned the tank from all dirt and resprayed it black. Also put in a new float.

Yeah.. sandblasting them was most of the work. Painting went pretty quick. Yes the ride is so much more enjoyable without those vibrations !
They are all under the car now with the Dunlop tires that I allready had bought and where on the old rims. No vibrations with these aswell ! Personally I think these look better on the 240Z with the fatter tiresBut now I have 2 sets so I can change them from time to time..
Here's some pictures, the car in the back is the Chevrolet Caprice from 73 from my brother.

I went to Japan Classic Sunday 2014 today. Only 2 other 240Z's showed up. One Dutch " Euro " 240Z from late 73 I guess ( registery date showed april 74 ) with a 5 speed. And another 71 Z with a 4 speed imported from the US.
Here's a few pictures I found on the facebook page.

The center caps on the 280ZX wheels where all gone, I bought new ones from total z parts, after some bargaining I got them for a good price.

Bart, I'm curious to know the street price for your car in Euros if you were to sell it in Europe?
Also, would you know if Z's are priced higher in other western European countries?

I really have no idea, Japanese classic cars still don't seem to hold much value here, maybe the same situation as in the US ?
I see Mustangs and Corvette's going for much higher prices, even a " project " will go for 8 to 10 k euro. I went to Stolze last time, and they asked 16k for a '' project '' C3 corvette from 1972 :S
Don't know about othern Western countries, but I don't think much of a difference.
It's going to get the roof removed and new paint this winter, which is now a minus factor if I would sell it, which I won't haha.
We do have a new classic car rule here since last year, anything over 40 years old doesn't pay road tax, so cars from 1974 or earlier will be worth more here.

I often see Z's that are not as nice as yours go listed at 20 to 25,000 Euros in Portugal. I'm not sure if they actually sell for this amount.

Last saturday I went to another classic car event in the village of Borculo. ( I can't seem to find pictures of it so far ). Also saw a Nissan GTR and ended up talking with the director of Nissan, Herwers Group. He said he also had some classic Z's in the past, his thought's where that Nissan should go back to making an affordable sports car like the 240Z's goal was back in the time.
On the way back I found the 240Z was running strange it would not go past 4.5 k rpm. Back home on Sunday I checked the ignition, and found the timing was shifted because the bolt that holds the distributor was worn out, when I tried to fasten it broke of. ( see picture ).
Lucky a friend who has alot of 240Z parts had one laying around, and the problem was fixed in the evening.

Today I went to a radiator repair shop to check about my temp meter, I thought the car was running to hot when pushed. But we checked with a heat gun, when the meter on the dash was showing 3/4 the car measured only 76 to 78c , according to the shop that was normal even a bit to low. So that's good news, I know now the meter is not that accurate.

I seen this 240Z 72 today when I was at the Nissan dealer next to them. http://www.erclassics.com/Datsun-240...-sale-931.phpn
I don't think there is not a panel without a dint in it of some kind. Maybe the roof. Seats have been recovered and all the rubber is old and brittle. Might of been a Cal car before it came to Europe. At €9900 he is asking a lot imo.

I don't know EU values, but that car seems like it is way overpriced. That would be a $2000 car in the states.

Thanks to a little help from Robert ( EhlersRS ) I managed to buy another classic car for restoration. It's a 1971 Ford Mustang Mach 1 with 302 ( not the biggest engine, but I will give it some upgrades for more power ). Car is located at Orlando Mustang in Florida. Currently arranging payment with them, and it will be shipped to The Netherlands later on.
It's an original Mach 1 by VIN, the VIN : 1F05F217955
Bought it for 3000 USD. Engine has water damage, but it will get a rebuild.
The 240Z is mostly done and I need a new challenge, and always wanted an American muscle car !
This is going to be fun !

Dropped the original steel wheels of at the tire shop to get balanced. I want to try them on the car see if the ride is smoother. You won't believe it but I still have little vibration in the steering wheel and trough the car above 70 mph, not as bad as before, but it's still there and I find it annoying on the highway.
On the car now are the 280ZX 15 inch turbo wheels with the original lug nuts, you would think it centered fine.. but this system does not use the conical lug nut like the original steel wheel of the 240z does. Now that I have the original lug nuts with the original wheels I wan't to try them out, who knows the ride if finally smooth as it should be..
If this doesn't cure it, I will live with the little vibration and the turbo wheels will go back on.

Tried the stock steel wheels and the vibration at higher speeds above 70 mph was much less id say 40% less. So it must be in the tire/wheel combo...
The turbo wheels are now back on.
I want to try one last thing: road force balancing on the hunter machine. I booked an appointment tomorrow morning, fingers crossed. This is the last thing I will try, if not cured I will live with it.

Okay this morning the wheels where balanced with the hunter road force machine. 1 rim needed a tire rotation on the rim ( high/low spot matching ), the other 3 only weights. I have to say it's much better now only a small amount left ! But that's okay I can't expect a 100% steady steering wheel at higher speeds.

The world seems to work at 70% and "good enough". These days it seems you have to do it yourself to get it done right.
Artisans, pride, and care are long gone..... except in a few isolated places.
So if you want balanced tires the first time you need to buy a machine or you have to settle for the 20th attempt.
A good friend had the same problem getting his suspension set.

The 240Z is heading to the painter tomorrow. I removed the bumpers and the headliner ( for sunroof removal ). The painter will remove all the windows/lights etc and replace all the rubber seals. ( all the seals are in the carton box in the rear of the 240z )
I also managed to buy an original 1971 owners manual from Ebay. The owner said the following: Nissan Motor Corp. reprinted these in 1997 for the Nissan Z-Store- to put in the glove box of the Restored 1970-72 240Z's. I was part of that program restoring Z's. I got these direct from Nissan Motor Corp. So these are NOS of Nissan's reprint.
