Default Dog riding in hatch, not good!

We went to the Tennessee line yesterday, enjoying the sunny weather. My dog loves to ride in the back so she climbed back there and took a nap. It was almost "The Big Nap". Cold weather had the windows up and the fumes got to her after a couple of hours. When I stopped to let her use the bathroom she was slow to get out and when she did she was as high as a kite, not from me it was the fumes, walking sideways and acting lethargic. Gotta remember to crack a window.

You should look after that as it can do the same to you on a late night when you are tired.

The dog experience could be a life saver.
There is scarcely anything in the world that some man cannot make a little worse, and sell a little more cheaply.
The person who buys on price alone is this man's lawful prey.

You've got a hole somewhere back there. The vacuum behind the car sucks exhaust fumes into the hatch area. Or maybe your hatch lid doesn't fit correctly. Or maybe you're talking about fuel fumes from a leaky fuel vent system? Either way, I agree with Blue. If you don't fix it, it'll probably fix you!

FAIW, I've made a habit of ALWAYS having the fresh air going in any vehicle. Whether heated or air conditioned, whether in an old vehicle or a brand new one, I always have the fan going and the selector on "fresh air."

On a lighter note, we had a little dog that died of old age a while ago. He LOVED the hatch of my Z. It was like the observation deck of a passenger train!

Did it look like this. I am dealing with a dog that has developed Vestibular disease from 8 years of ears, sinus and tooth infections.
And i found that driving in a car can cause symptoms to reappear after
    none for a long time.

How sad. Luckily she wasn't that bad and it only lasted for a minute or two. I really hope your dog gets better BGM.

Start her up and have someone hold a big thick rag up against your tailpipe. See if you can hear any leaks.

I find extending the tailpipe 8-10" beyond the rear of the car works wonders for both noise AND fumes getting sucked in, even ifyou catch your pants on it every time you open the hatch. But it allows you to have a louder exhaust system that gets quieter the faster you go.]

I just don't think you should be getting fumes in the cockpit. How's the rubber seal around your shifter? Hatch seal.

Whatever it takes, make it go away before it makes YOU go away!

Don't forget about the drain hole for the antenna. When the drain tube rots away, it no longer seals the hole in the body where the water drains out. It's hidden behind the trim panel, so not too many people think to look for it.

I am planning doing a 240z taillight mod on my 280z. After reading this thread, I think I need to spend a lot more time fitting the lights and make sure everything is sealed correctly.

The 240 came with a complete rubber seal kit from MSA. That's my springtime project for sure, the hatch seal is barely there and around the doors it's coming apart too. My Dad and step monster are on their 3rd Pug, names Milo, he's a black one instead of fawn. Faints like those goats do only he does it when he gets hot instead of startled like the goats. It doesn't sound too funny but the Vet says it's common so we laugh like hell when he does it then carry him inside to a cold tub of water, then he's back snorting! Love those dogs.

I've got another dog story for all the animal lovers out there. About a month ago this little red nosed bull dog shows up at my Mom's house, she lives in a dog dumping neighborhood- lots of houses with white picket fences and kids playing everywhere. I brought him home with me while she ran an add in the local paper, no response. I put him on a couple of Bully Rescue sites and made him a facebook page. After 3 weeks I got someone interested in him. Drove an hour and a half to meet them and noticed a BAMAZON tag on the husbands truck. They fell in love with the puppy so I started loading his crate and some toys he played with into his truck when I asked him if he knew the guys on the show BAMAZON, he says "I am one of the guys"! So that little puppy now lives with a TV star on 50 acres of land on Lake Martin in south Alabama with a little boy too. If you've ever seen the show it is Darrel's dog now. Good ending for everybody.

I found a huge reduction in the fumes entering the car, when i put sticky tape around the edge of the hatch lid inspection panel.

That's one of our little guys in my avatar. We have two.

Ah, gee... Sorry to hear about pete. He's a cute little guy. He looks like he was well loved.

My 16 year old kitty is a fixture in my lap right now. She's turning gray and can't jump anymore due to arthritis. She sends her best wishes to you and Pete, as do I.

I've never heard of "BAMAZON", not much of a reality TV fan and I felt compelled to google the show, ya know, to make sure the little guy wasn't gonna get eaten or something. Think O___________.

But seriously, I feel for you guys that have ever had to put down your best friend, I've had to go that route several times, and it hurts every time. You need to understand it going in when you are looking at that cute little pup, if you don't have the heart to end his misery when it can't be fixed, you have no business getting a dog (or cat) in the first place.Click image for larger version.

Euthanasia that was were Pete was headed. I am glad i didn't have to make that
Trip to the vet this time.
Pete's problems stem from years of ear infections and Antibiotics.
He was up and getting around on his own till the last night but stopped eating the last three days. I fed him baby food and water from a syringe that last day. Here is a video explaining vestibular Pete showed sings of this for years.
    "Treatment supportive care"

Vestibular Disease in Dogs: Symptoms and Proper Treatment

My pug before Pete was Bullit i had to put him down at 14 years.
For the last four years he was on insulin and went blind at 13.
He could get around the house and yard with no problem.
But diabetic seizures forced me to put him down.
    I still miss that dog.

If you care for a medium to large breed dog well enough to get a healthy teenager for any period of time, you have done well. I've mostly had Dobies and Rott's, the average life expectancy is around 8 years for these breeds. My last Dobie, Kato, made it 14 years before I had to put him down, I sobed like a bitch and held him on my lap for an hour after he passed, I wanna cry just thinking about it. Ruger will be 8 this summer and he's healthy as a horse.

I think the biggest key to a raising a healthy old dog is doing your homework when getting the pup. Look hard at the parents (and the parents litter mates if you can) if you can't meet with mom and dad, don't take the pup. Look at previous litters too if you can, most owners will be glad to have you visit. Stay away from pet stores and kennels, besides supporting puppy mills, those dogs are not as healthy as a private breeders stock. If you don't want to do all the leg work, adopt.

Not trying to jump the thread, just a hard core animal lover, currently have 1 dog, 1 cat, 2 birds and a horse. Food donations are appriciated.

I try to look at my pets age in human years and not calendar years - dogs and cats age approx. 1 human to 8 dog years. The last pet we put down was out cat - she was 16 years old and blind. The one before that was our dog (she was 14 and had eye cancer - we had to have that removed also but the cancer came back. We asked out vet how do you know when to put down a pet and she said when the pet stopped doing it's 3 favorite things it was time...............still hurts like a SOB but nobody wants a loved family member in pain or not living the life that is deserved. Of course we have a cat and a dog - we are animals lovers as well but I keep on telling myself this is our last pet.............I know I am kidding myself too...........

This is the best last will and testaments for a pet:

The sadist thing i have ever seen my neighbor moved and left the dog.
That dog hung out at the house for weeks roaming free then coming back and sitting on porch of empty house.
We finely got it in a kennel. Detroit is filled with unwanted dogs.
