I need help with the early 70-71 choke cable grommet reproduction, if anyone could let me know the length of the two nipples which the wires come out and if the nipples are coming straight out or are they angled up?
This is a pic of what I need a measurement of, the two nipples that are joined.
Any help would be great or even pictures.
thanks Steve
I have the nipples machined out, just need the length and angle.

I have taken some photos next to tape measure on my 9/70 but can't upload them from ipad to this site so will do it when next in the office.
It appears the nipples are angled up but mine is also slightly split so it is hard to say what was the original angle.

thanks for all the input, I machined the rest of the parts today for a test sample.
Steve
I might have an NOS set but I won't be able to check until next week. PM me if you need my help.

Very nice as always. Steve, do you know up to what number car these would have been on?

Steve, just a couple of observations. Looking at webmanic70s picture, it looks like the nipples have split from the angular stress of the cables, and,
it doesn't appear to have a lip molded into the ends of each nipple as you did with your sample. Are you sure the originals were molded with the
upward slant of the nipples like the more recent grommet style?
I'm probably not seeing this correctly, but just needed to ask. Too bad that someone doesn't have a good, original, example for comparison. If
I can source one, I'll certainly post any helpful information.
Many thanks for all of your work in providing a much needed source for important, original parts.

Dan, very good questions. I could not tell if straight or angled myself. If you look at the very first picture in this thread it looks like they are angled up in that picture. As far as the molded lip, every other grommet has a molded lip on the 240, even the choke cable grommet for the 510 have a molded lip, so I could not tell if after 40+ years the rubber deteriorated and lost the molded lip from a swelling effect? That is why I went molded lip. I have a lead on a early 70 choke grommet that should be coming my way in the next week or so. It will be much easier to reproduce if the nipples are straight and no lip.
or if anyone want to ship me their worn out one, I will provide you with a new reproduction plus send your old one back.
thanks for the input.
Steve
I will have a closer look at mine and let you know if I think the angle was there at the outset. It would make sense if it was because the cables arc up and over to the connectors on the carbs.
I was also going comment on the moulded lip. If I bought one similar to the sample shown, I would cut the lip off to make it look more authentic. The length also appears too long. I will therefore post another pic in the morning with the tape measure showing the exact length along the angled part.
It will no doubt be another part added to the shopping list. Very impressed.

Hi Steve,
I had a closer look at this grommet. It originally appears that there was no angle on this item. I pulled the cables to give them more slack and squeezed the end to close up the 'split' on mine and it seemed to be fairly straight. However I believe if you built them this way then it would only split again because the cables really need the angle which is probably why they changed the design. Below is a picture showing the length of the feeders for your reference.

I'm just going to have to chime in. The later, angled version is probably still available, or can be found without too much difficulty, I am sure, in NOS
condition. The only reason to want one of the early grommets, without the angular modeling and flared end of the nipple, as it seems to appear in
Webmasinic70's photos, is because that is what it was "originally" for early cars.
Forty year old rubber is going to dry rot and split. I can wait for the sake of acquiring a good reproduction of the authentic item. New rubber bends.

Your stuff is awesome! Do you have a master list of everthing with prices? I need everything you got for a 71. I've own'd it since 85 and now I'm going to make it right.
Have you made a speedo cable firewall grommet? They are NLA and typically are not furnished with replacement cables. I still have my original cable but the grommet has gone the way of most old rubber!

Steve,
I am working on a couple of other Datsun/Nissan projects. Do you have an interest on reproducing some other rubber (neoprene) small parts?
