Some foam and glue and a craft mood will get you these:
btw how do those 45mm horns mate to the SK's opening. Is there a step?
I just lucked into a deal on these air horns,
45mm choke, 57mm tall and 87mm wide at the lip. Big lip, I spent a few hours today hunting through sites that sell air filters for air stacks and haven't found anything.
Wondering if the Z collective (love that term, kinda like the borg collective) has any suggestions, foam socks or stainless steel mesh caps?
Worse case, I could have a few mm cut off the lip so a standard filter would fit but would rather not do that if I don't have to.
Thanks,
Chris

The air horn filter thing has been discussed recently on hybridz.
Weber Velocity Stacks Filters or No? - Nissan L6 Forum - HybridZ
Given what the advantages of using air horns do and how that works, ie the improvements in air pattern and flow at the lip of the horn, it seem intuitive to me that using those mesh filters that slip over that critical lip shape can do nothing but remove most if not all of the advantaged gained. Let alone the poor filtering they provide. Do they look cool? Yup.

Granny, check out the weber air specific filter that UNI has on the automotive page! Maybe these dont screw with the air patterns into the horn as much
Automotive | Uni Filter
I hope they mean $32 per pair, but I'm afraid not.

Jim, I thought those would work too until I saw the 3.25" is the O.D., there made for 2" wide stacks.
Micthell, I forgot about ITG, they have some very nice stuff. I have sent an inquiry about their JCS 12.
Thanks,

This may be the best route to take - I'm thinking seriously about one. I really like my horns showing, and the air flow around them but the micro dust is not very healthy for my engine.

Yeah, I have been looking at those for a while, this is the CAI box I would really like to get,
![]()
As far as I can tell these air boxes were made in Japan for their market and NA never got them.
Very slick looking. But in any case I would have to cut down my present air horns so they would fit so I think I'll try and build one out of filter foam first and see how that works before I spent the big money.
Thanks,
Chris

Im going to install Ramair in to mine (cause im cheap), i wonder do you just insert them over horns and thats it? The sucktion keeps them on place i guess.

Koalia, from what I gather, the two cut out holes on the back of the filters are fairly small so you get a good seal and the entire piece is light and stiff so there shouldn't be a lot of movement. The air horns should also limit up/down movement.
I purchased a set of 3 online as well, post some pics when they arrive and I'll do the same.

Just got my new RAMAIR filters from England so here they are,
![]()
![]()
Because the horn flare is so wide, 87mm I have to install the horns into the foam sock first then bolt to the carb body. I guess it looks okay, I was hoping for some of the horn showing but clean air is more important to me.
Ramair says the filter socks are ready to use and are treated but I can not feel any oil of any kind on them.
I rubbed them against glass and could see no film or smear. They feel like clean new foam, is there some kind of spray that is used now to attract dust?
I am tempted to treat them with the UNI filter oil I have, anyone have any advice?
And for no reason other then I think you guys will appreciate it I include a pic I found that I just think is beautiful,
JDM Fairlady I think with motorcycle carbs, an honest engine bay, not too fussy, no bling but all business, simple and clean.
Great shock tower brace.

Can you see any sunlight if held up to the sky on those? How dense are they? Did you order the 40 or 45 DCOE size?
Thanks for the pic's. This may be the way I go on longer trips.

Second pic (maroon Z) looks like an R-factory airbox, I just purchased one of these for my cold air setup. Max airhorn length I measured would be about 70mm with minimal clearance.
Re filters. I'd run them dry unless specified otherwise. I ran uni filter socks, I've tried them oiled, then dry and it's messier when they are oiled. The positive was the oil seemed to help keep the dirt more on the outside of the filter, when dry I found more grit imbedded in the foam material and cleaning was taking at lot longer. If you do oil them, do it very lightly.
Colinc 'JDM Fairlady' is my ride, it's just an AUS spec November 73 240. Pic was taken at a car show, filters were removed for asthetics, uni filter socks are not nearly as pretty as the ram air filters. It's a shame to hide the stacks under an airbox/filters but that's the trade off I guess.

Travel n man, these filters will work for 40 or 45 DCOE, the holes on the back are about 1" dia and do fit tightly around the base of the horn. Below is a pic with the lens of the camera stuck inside the filter looking up a florescent light and you can see a bit of light. There are two layers that make up the filter, dark grey is fairly coarse and the lighter grey much denser and similar to the UNI standard foam next to it.
![]()
I emailed Ramair and they assured me that the foam has been treated but will need oiling after cleaning,
I think I'm going to oil it anyway.

Chris -
Great info and pic's. I'll grab a set of these on ebay and run with. My car only travels in great weather for maybe 2000 miles yearly. I'll keep my screens but for my annual trip with my son in our Z's this filter will be perfect - easy on and easy off.

Hey, I'm hoping they are good too, I haven't had a chance to start up the engine with them yet, but they do breathe well. As I said before, I'm going to oil them first regardless of the treatment that Ramair has done. I'm not up on all the new stuff out there but it seems to me that they may have sprayed them with some kind of static spray that attracts dust, oil I know
and oil I trust.

Have you dyno'd yet - if you do let us know how they perform on and off - see if they make a difference. Do you have an AFR sensor? I have put my car up for the winter due to salt - if you still have yours out and know your stats let us know if these filters change anything

I have had ITG's
Those round metal wire that clip to the opening of the DCOE air horn
and Now I run the K&N Filter
One thing to note. There is an opening on the side of the DCOE that allows air into the system to mix with the fuel idle jets and emulsion tubes. That little circle lets in air, and most of the time all of these filters DO NOT filter that air. So you could still be letting dirt into your fuel bowl. After my 1000 mile rally there was DIRT inside my fuel bowl. NOt much, but I feel that little circular opening NEEDS to be covered up.

Excellent point Zedy. In fact, other than the dirt intake issue, the fuel bowl has to be at the SAME pressure as the inlet air going into the air horns. This is why that vent hole is right next to the intake, they are DESIGNED to be in the same air space, ie INSIDE the filter.
With rad fan and other "wind"while moving, racing past the exposed vent holes, and the pressure drop inside the filters, the vent and intake air will not be at the same pressure.
Now maybe, most of the time, the pressure difference is negligable, but not always....

An update. I'm still going to use these filters,
but I put together these filters from the UNI foam so I could get them on and off quickly for test and tuning.
They might also be good for going to car shows as the Ramair filters are much tighter. Unless...I cut larger holes in the back so they install and remove easier - hmmm, worth thinking about.

Not a bad idea. I like the look of open polished air horns for the Z, but also would never dream of operating like that for long drives. A quick pop off air cleaner would not be a bad idea for the bling factor.
