I was cleaning mine and it broke. Then I found out you can order them from Nissan for less than €1.50.
Also helps if you fit the breather before you mount the diff under the car. They can be a tight fit and not much roomto move.

Matt, Have you rolled the car forward or backwards yet? If not, the tires will grab the floor and keep it from settling.

Yea I rolled it about a car length back and forth. Also the control arm bushings and spindle nuts are still loose. The only thing I can think of is that I tightened the sway bar while it was still up on jacks. Not sure if that would matter? ?
i believe the sway bar should rotate freely in its bushings, so it wouldn't present any resistance to the car settling.
are you sure the springs are set correctly in the perches? also, are you sure you have the correct springs (front in front, rear in rear)?

This is incredible. I am very, very jealous! Thanks for sharing your re-build. Looking forward to seeing how this goes
The car looks great.
I wouldn't worry about the height yet.
No glass or seats or anything else in the interior for that matter. What about gas tank and differential? Spare tire?
I'm thinking you're going to be adding hundreds of pounds before your done, so I wouldn't worry until you have it loaded and then see where you're at.
I'm running Eibachs and my car isn't sitting anywhere that high. Like others have said, check the part numbers, fully assemble the car, then see where you're sitting. I installed mine, then checked the part numbers and realized I had them in backwards.

Hazmatt, you are doing great work, don't worry about the height of the wheel arches. Once the engine/tranny are in things will even out more and you will be surprised how much the weight of the interior fittings affect the stance.
The detail is superb! But with that white engine bay I can see how your weekends are going to be spent once she is on the road.

Yep had them powder coated.
Been busy with family the last couple weeks so I havent had the time to work on the Z till now.
I covered the floor pans, headliner, door panels, and a few other inner panels with Dynamat. I used the 34 sq ft kit and worked out pretty well. Should be nice and quiet now.
Also installed the door handles and hinge hardware.
Hazmatt, love this resto thread, you are doing awesome work. I'm in the middle of my own restoration, and am actually putting in Fatmat Rattletrap these days. I've been wondering about how much coverage I should do, reading all the other posts about this I can find (this club is such a good resource!) but getting confused about how extensively I need to cover everything. Some posts show every square inch covered with this stuff, others not so much. It seems to me that this material really only serves its purpose on the "flimsier" panels, like the floorpans, left rear quarter panel, headliner, and door panels, since it is meant to reduce or deaden vibrations, and slapping it on every square inch isn't necessary. That said, I find myself nodding at your placement scheme. Are you also going to put it on your tranny tunnel and on the rear deck? What is your thinking on how much to use and where to put it? Finally, do you also plan on putting down any kind of padding or foam for sound reduction? Thanks for any advice!
for sound deadening you can do the tap test to hear what vibrates.
Another way would be to mount a speaker on a location then use a software tool to do a frequency sweep. You should hear the points were resonance occurs (excitation of the metal). The speaker's magnets and steel car shell make this easy to do but a super magnet may also help couple the speaker to the metal. If you use a magnetic parts bowl to couple the speaker, remove the rubber base as you do not want isolation of the speaker from the body.

Hi 240tom!
Thanks for the compliment. Ive heard good things about the Fatmat as well. In my opinion, you can go as far as you want with sound deadening. The sky is the limit. I think going all out is a little unnecessary unless you are doing a stereo competition car. For me, I am mainly concerned with replacing the factory sound deadening that I removed on the floor pans. Along with taking care of some trouble areas like the doors, roof, and rear hatch area. I don't want to add too much because this stuff is actually pretty heavy. I have a little leftover so I will wait until I start driving it and i'm sure ill find a few more areas to put it. I'll probably wait till then to see if I need the padding or not as well.
Any idea how much weight the Dynamat added?

Hello, Im back. It ended up being an expensive weekend for me. I just bought my first brand new vehicle, a '14 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I really like it so far.
Ok back to the Z....
I also purchased this bad boy.
A 5 speed close ratio out of an 80 ZX. Now all I need is a new rear diff with some 3.90 gears and I'll be good to go. I may run the original diff for awhile but I think the gearing will make it sluggish on the low end. Maybe the torque of the 3.1 might make up for it, we will have to wait and see. I couldn't pass up the deal on craigslist for the tranny.
I also installed my firewall insulator I got from Black Dragon. Its good quality material but the fit isnt the greatest. It required some trimming.
I then spent most of my weekend rebuilding my heater box. The entire box was disassembled and cleaned. Replaced heater core, hoses, blower motor, foam seals, and re-greased all moving parts. It should work like new now.
This was nasty.
Clean blower fan and new blower motor.
New heater core on the right.
Hoses were brittle and leaking.
New hoses and reassembled.
Then I went to work on the wiring harness. Just scrubbed it down with degreaser and re-wrapped it with new harness tape. It turned out really good.
I hope to have the motor back from Rebello soon!![]()
First off, you are making awesome progress with your build. I love the attention to detail! Keep the pics coming.
I have a ZX 5spd in my '71 240z and it still has the stock R180 diff in it. I don't know what gears are in it but I know its not anywhere near 3.90. However, cruising around town and even fast sprints on to highway on-ramps are no problem whatsoever. The car makes plenty of power and doesn't strain the motor. I personally like it as it lets me take advantage of the full power range of the engine.

Restoration thread of my old '72 240z -> http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/o...1972-240z.html
FWIW, I used a 4:11 rear from a 200sx to replace my stock 3:36 R180. The difference is amazing. For long highway trips the 3:36 was great, very "long-legged", but for canyon carving which is what I mostly use the car for the 4:11 is terrific. I have taken the car on long road trips to SW Colorado on the beautiful twisty roads we have here ( the north side of the Black Canyon comes to mind) and I feel the 4:11 was the way to go. I turn about 3200 rpms @ 70 mph. The front diffy on Nissan 4X4 trucks is an R180 3:90, and they are also great. I started with the stock diffy, but changed after I had to shift down to first in some of the tighter corners. Enjoy the ride...I really like your resto.
Cheers, Mike

Really enjoying this thread! Lot of quality work being done quickly! Great color choice on the car too!
I work in Sedalia, and wondered if I could get the name and number of your painter since he's local and you seem to be pretty happy with his work?
I need some minor repair done on the z I just picked up.
Also, are you staying fuel injected with the rebello rebuild?
Also curious where you get your sem products? I need to repair my dash as well!

Funny, we just got back from eating down at Palmer Lake tonight.
Palmer Lake is a nice, quiet place to live! I haven't had a chance to really try the restaurants out since I bought my place here in July. It's on the to do list for this weekend though!
Thanks for the tips on the SEM products.
If you ever need a hand with your car, let me know. I get off work from IREA every day at 4:30 and would be glad to lend a hand just to meet a fellow z owner!
Always interesting to check in on this thread...
Great attention to detail.

The flywheel is 10.5 lbs. I will weigh the clutch and pressure plate for you and post it.
According to my bathroom scale.... the flywheel is about 10.3 lbs and the pressure plate is about the same. The clutch disc is only 2 or 3 lbs.
Thanks. I can't remember what the 280Z pressure plates weigh. I think a bit under 10kg, but I might be thinking of the thinner 240Z early model.
Its a nice looking set-up you have.

Hey guys, I bought a 240Z steering wheel and i'm in need of a horn pad and the pieces that mount it to the wheel. If anyone has one laying around let me know how much.
Haz, you are doing an amazing job!! You should bring up to my place for the "Aspen changing" would love to see the ride in person. Sorry, can't help you with the steering wheel, I replaced mine with a 14" wheel, but I can't remember the name of the company(old timers disease kicked in). Anyway, my wheel looks very nice and I love the finger grips on it. Keep up the great work.

I used the 260/280 horn on the 240 wheel I put it my car, it required making a little mount bracket and was overall a horrible experience where I convinced all my neighbors that I'm a psycho who honks at everyone that drives by, but it works great now.

Just finished a few more things on the list.
Installed the vinyl trim on my pillars and did my headliner. I followed this link from Blue and worked great. Only difference is I bought the kit from Motorsport.
http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/i...tallation.html
The glue they send with their headliner kit is garbage, throw it away or give it to your wife to do crafts and stuff.
I went to Autozone and bought this:
Its pricey ($25 a can) but its the real deal. This is the same stuff they use at Automotive upholstery shops. (I used to work at an upholstery shop).
I also put in the dash and finished most of the wiring.

Really nice work on the headliner, good tip on the glue, too.

looking great - love watching the progress.
btw - i also bought the headliner kit from msa but used their spray glue. it seems to be holding up just fine for me. i put sound mat on the ceiling and used pretty much the whole can. the only issue i ran into was my lack of experience doing a headliner (it's tricky and in a cramped car working upside down i made a couple of mistakes)
maybe i'll be re-doing it in a few years if the glue doesn't hold, but it's been almost a year, through a winter and a hot summer and so far so good...

just the headliner - glue sticks to the foam headliner backing and foil faced sound mat.
my pillars are not vinyl-wrapped, they are integral color plastic. (1978)

The dash looks fantastic! Wish I took pics of mine before I covered it with the full face dash cover. I don't think mine is repairable, that's how bad it looked!
Yea I have a cover too, if I didnt like the way it turned out I was going to just slap on the cover. Try it you may be surprised how well it turns out.
Matt
Does a new set of hardware, bolts come with the Fidanza flywheel to prevent embedment of the bolts?
Hope your motor gets to you soon.

HaZmatt,
When you worked on the rubber parts, what product did you use for the degreasing?
Thanks, Charles
Thanks
C
Keep up the good work and keep posting pictures! I love it!
I took my gas tank to a local radiator shop and had them hot tank and seal it. They also painted it black for me.
Installed new rubber insulators on the straps
Cleaned up the filler hose and installed it.
And finally got my tank in.
Now I just need to figure out where all of these fuel lines go
Also bought a new side mirror from a 240Z
Holes dont line up so I had to drill a new hole and make the other one larger
And installed pic
Much better than the plastic 280Z mirrors I think.
Started assembling my door glass. Polished them up a little to take some of the fine scratches out.
Smooth as.... well, glass.
Freshly plated hardware
Now I need to source some new window regulators because I had mine plated and it destroyed the plastic rollers and the crank mechanism in the process
On a happier note I talked to Dave Rebello and he told me my motor was finished and he just needs to do the dyno testing on it. So if all goes well it should be shipping out soon!
Looks great!

Specialty Plating here in Denver
Specialty Plating Services | Denver, Auora, Boulder, CO
After a much needed week long vacay in Maui, I'm back to work on the Z. I focused my attention on the lights and the rear area of the car.
Pretty rough shape.
Repainted the taillight panel in factory gunmetal
Disassembled
Cleaned housings
Then polished the lenses.
New foam gaskets.
Installed new bulbs.
Purchased some cleaner chrome bezels off Ebay. I still may get mine replated in the future.
And.......Walahhh!
On to the front turn signals. I purchased the 240Z turn signals off Ebay as well. I got them fairly cheap but they were rough. The lenses were in decent shape though.
First I disassembled them and soaked everything in degreaser overnight.
As you can see, it stripped the chrome off of reflector piece. So I got some chrome vinyl wrap and covered it.
Turned out pretty good I think. Hopefully it holds up to the heat.
Cleaned everything up and reassembled.
Also polished up the lenses.
![]()
Amazing job Haz! Did you use the gunmetal spray from SEM? Its what I used and then I sprayed them with a satin clear also from SEM.
Amazing what a little polish and a buffing wheel will do! Those lenses look awesome!
Oh, what was wrong with the precision hatch seal....I need a new one.

Your project is coming along nicly. Really looking good. Nice job on the lenses. My taillights were just as bad and the chrome bezels were painted black by the po. I have a set of 240Z lenses for the front, just haven't got around to doing the air dam yet. Ended up cleaning up the 280 units in the grill. http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/e...l-refresh.html

Thank you sir. I actually ended up using a wheel paint that I had. The color matched pretty good. The seal from the kit seemed like it was too thick and the hatch didnt want to close very well. The OEM one is still a little thick but its better. I think it just needs to be broken in.
Haz, that is some amazing work, can't wait to see it completed. If I can help let me know. I live up in Divide but don't mind a road trip every so often but I don't take the Z out in the winter I've put in way to much work to end up in a ditch if you know what I mean, scheesh Colorado drivers!

Yes, I have the MSA fibre glass bumper already fitted, but still using the 280Z valance. The problem with that combination is it leaves a rather large air gap between the bottom two row grille and the bumper. The 240Z valance wont fit because the front frame section drops down to low for the larger 280Z radiator.
I had two options:
1- Fit the 240Z bumper with the 280Z valance or 280Z air-dam and make a new lower grille (parts out of a 240Z grille) to fill the gap.
2- go full 240Z look with the indicators under the bumper, 240Z grille and a 240Z air-dam.
I found a 240Z grille in good condition, but then decided to go with option 2. Now I have a 240Z air-dam and plan on fitting it in the next months.
