I wonder if the guys that write the sales pitch for the eBay ad know how sleazy they sound, or if they just can't resist? The more exclamation points and capital letters, the more suspicious things look.

Good catch on the urgency to sell the car quickly! Bill, thanks for posting the photos from January. It doesn't look like any work was done by the current owner and he just wants to flip the car. I found several other 240Z's he sold this year by searching the phone number provided in the ad. Despite the missing and damaged parts, this car looks like it's worth saving. However, I don't think it's worth over $5K as the bidding now stands. Hopefully someone that appreciates early Z's will buy this car and restore it.

It's probably going to take a minimum of $25-30k to get this one "right", on top of the purchase price. That assumes the new owner does the work him/herself at $0 cost of labor. It's probably more if there's an attempt at "stock" or "as delivered". Costs can be reduced IF the new owner does all their own body and paint work, engine re-build, ...etc. Even though it's a 3-digit VIN, a $ break-even is going to be a tough road. Current bid is $5,300 with a reserve not met.

That car looks very much like 27th. Does it run? Jim, I think your estimate for restoration is way low however I think that restored to that 'as delivered' condition would yield what the restoration ends up costing, (labor comment well taken) or, break even. I'm anxious to see what it sells for. Perhaps one would consider restoring it to 'barn find' condition!

I sent the seller a question and he/she actually responded. Looks like a texter.

"I don't see any pictures of the grill and lower front end. Is there damage there? "

"no damage... grille and front bumper are in the car...

There's a two party battle happening but the reserve is still not met.

If the headlight buckets,grill and the front bumper are in the car ,then why were they taken off. The Z looks to me to have sat in a field, then moved to the barn. Looks more like a parts car to me.

The hood is a different color also. Not primer, but gray/silver with pinstripes. Looks like an accident. replacement parts purchased, and still being assembled. No mention of the bottom corner fender pieces and the center section either.

Straight stories are hard to find with these old collectibles. The guy actually wrote the sentence below in the ad.

"Body is straight with almost no rust and no collision damage that I can see. "

Seems like when I ever see one of these I end up bashing the seller but they all seem to stretch the truth.

I don't know what it sold for, but when I talked to the gentleman in Colorado he was asking $7,000 back in January. With everything required for a restore it is way beyond my wallet. The owner at that time said the engine had an E88 head, but he had an E31 that he would include with the car. Sounds like he must have swapped heads as the ad says it has the E31 on it.The one thing the EBay photos don't show real clear is the chunk missing in the dash above the tach. Also the seat covering is not original as the ad says. Looks like velour material. As much as I want a low number I just couldn't jump on it. Hopefully it finds a good home and receives all the tender care it deserves.

Yea...I remember that car...January...yea. It appears as though the current seller cleaned the car up real well and is trying to flip it. I'm still curious. Does it run?

The bidding is now up to $7600 and it's definitely not worth that amount in its current condition. From the little that can be seen in the photos, this car is restorable and worth more than a parts car, but the bidding war is out of control! This car isn't worth as much as the '71 "barn find" we discussed a few days ago (Datsun Z Series Coupe | eBay). The second listing for that car was ended before the auction ran its course, so I don't know what it finally sold for. Like many here, I wish all of the 240Z could be saved, but that just isn't reality.

The eBay seller has other cars for sale, including a GNose Z. If you search his phone number on Google you'll find his shop downn Califormia. It's a Google world we live in now.

Crazy, stupid money being bid - now at $10,600 and the reserve not met. I guessed that the seller was looking for $10k but its clear he has his sights set on a bigger fleecing. Seven hours till its over.

The final bid ended at $17,600 with 34 bids and the reserve was not met! I guess with catch phrases like "incredibly rare", "collector's dream", and "amazing" how could you not want this "original vintage sports car at a great price"! At these prices, I'm going to start trolling the salvage yards for Z's to sell.

I've seen auctions where the reserve is set high and the seller colludes with a buyer to drive up the bids. If their fish take the bait the reserve is dropped at the last minute and the colluding buyer stops bidding, leaving the fish with the highest bid. I'm not saying that's what happened here.

The same little game happens at the big muscle car auctions.

He is a street broker selling Trucks and cars on Ebay.
