My wife took my new Konig Rewinds to the tire store today to get tires mounted on them. I put the wheels on the 260Z this evening and swapped the Iron Cross wheels to the 240Z.
Rather than let these threads go on forever as they do in some other forums, I thought I'd start new ones for separate generations for the New Year. Use these threads for short, Twitter-like posts, things that may not be worth their own thread.
Since only the S30 threads got any use over the past couple of years, I've only created this one thread this year for all Zs.
Enjoy, and let's keep each other involved!

I got the splash pan from the 260Z blasted and coated. The place turned it around in one day for me. I lucked out in that they were coating a bunch of other things flat black, so they added the splash pan into the mix.
For the Atlanta area people, this is the place I went to: Professional Cryogenic Metallurgy & Coatings,Atlanta,Georgia,Cryogenic,REM Gears, powder coating, ceramic coating, sandblasting, metal polishing
Pete Thomas recommended them to me, and I can see why.

I watched the remainder of the snow melt. I will not be taking the Z out until we get a good rain to wash off the salt they (belatedly) put on the roads. I have a small inkling of how our northern brethren must feel every winter. I'll take Atlanta's once every few years winter problems over theirs.

Today I painted the 240z back floor "hunter green" a spray paint color from thrifty hardware similar to the original #907 green for my car. Last summer I scraped off the tar material that was back there so I painted it today so it would not be bare metal. I thought it was interesting that most of the metal was shiny and rust free underneath that tar stuff. I know it is like undercoat but I didn't think it was supposed to be much protection.
Layed on my back in the garage with hot water from the hose - washed / degreased / rinsed the entire underside of my car. Getting ready to re-freshen the undercoating with some 3M and get ready to put the rear suspension, diff, brake system back in..........a very wet job to say the least!

It's one of those "while I am at it" projects. What else would you do if the rear suspension, exhaust, diff, struts were out of your azz end? Yep, pull the tank, evap tank, return lines............"while I am at it"! Vapor hoses are a PITA - two parts are left from Nissan - 1 is formed - the other is not. All 5 lines different sizes for venting.......WTH!!
Break out the POR15 again.........might as well do the EVAP tank and the gas tank "while I am at it"..................let's see what else I can find back there. I've already checked all the rubber plugs to make sure I'm keeping exhast fumes out.....just ordered a new filler hose...."while I am at it".
Damn - I'm glad I've got an understanding wife!!![]()

Replaced most of the coolant hoses in my neighbor's 240Z, with exception of the under-dash heater hoses. No leaks, just preventative maintenance.
The original dealer installed A/C makes the interior hose connections very difficult to get at, and I had to remove the A/C evaporator. Her heater valve was completely frozen, so I have to order a new one before I can complete the job, probably next weekend. I think the heater hoses and valve had never been replaced!

Just got the 78 out of the shop and breaking it in after a rebuild. Used N42 block, head (gasket match porting), and intake. I went with flattop pistons for ~10.3:1 compression and the cam got a regrind from Elgin to a Stage 2-2.5, triple ground valves w/Isky springs, a 6-3-2 header, and 2.5" exhaust. I had already lowered it with Eibach progressively wound springs and KYBs. I've got the Koenig rewinds as well. Gotta get those bumpers off of there! This is my daily driver.

Travel'n Man, great looking car!
I spent my night with one victory and one defeat. I swapped out the shifter bushings which is night and day, mostly due to the bushings not being there in the first place! Here's a video to show the difference:
The defeat was swapping out my thermostat. It's stuck open so I picked up an $8 replacement and figured two bolts should only take 5 minutes of my time. That was until the bolt closest to the block sheared in half. >_< Spent an hour with a left hand thread bit trying to back it out to no avail. I've got it soaking in PB blaster hoping that'll help loosen it up for tomorrow's round 2.![]()
Keep us informed, I'm going to have to replace mine as soon as the weather warms up.

Finished installing all new cooling hoses in my neighbor's 72' 240Z, along with a new heater valve. Not hard, but not a "comfortable" job with your head down in the foot well. Her temp control wire was broken, so I had to replace it with music wire from the local hobby store.
Now I just need to troubleshoot why her fan hasn't worked for 15 years. Plan to start by testing if the blower fan operatess using my 12 VDC battery charger.

Pushed Z out of garage, flushed coolant and added DI water. Pressurized Accusump to check for leaks. Added 11 qts of oil, yeah that's correct. Turned over engine until oil pressure went up, then started engine. Run until water temp was 160, opened Accusump, closed and shut off engine. Added 2.5 more qts of oil, topped off radiator, restarted and put Z back in the garage.
if a little knowledge can make you dangerous, I'm a little dangerous
Connected the battery, removed the coil wire and cranked it to circulate the oil, connected coil and started her up. Backed the Z out of the garage. Turned on the hot & cold water in the garage (it was 50 degrees out), and washed all the dust off. My Son washed the Fairlady too, and he took some pics.

Finally got my Z outside this past Sunday for the first time since late October.
I changed the back panel color from a bright gold color to a more original gray color over the winter. I had the gold color on for over 30 years. The new color is a little warmer than the original color and I installed re chromed tail light surrounds that 9teen7t240z did for me. It all came together on Sunday. I thin I finally got my blown fuse problem fixed:
The marker lights would go out at random times while driving, usually at dusk. I noticed a smoke-smell occasionally when I have the outside lamps on, so I kept an eye open for the cause (probably a corroded connection.) Another symptom I saw was that the fusebox cover (the broken one I use while driving) was deformed in one place, over "Tail lamps," so I replaced it after a good spritzing with eOxit 100, and kept an eye on that too. Then finally while I had the glovebox out to service the firewall connectors I tried the lamps and actually saw the fuse burn! I replaced it again and tried the lamps again- burning tail lamp fuse!
With that and the smoke I saw earlier coming from the area last fall, I supposed the glovebox lamp had a corroded connector, so I unplugged it, replaced the fuse, and turned on the lamps- no burning fuse...
So now I'm testing the lamp to see if it's shorting somehow. The bulb has corrosion around the base, so I will installed a fresh bulb. I will test it with a sacrificial wire and the car's cattery, and if nothing lights up (burns/melts) I will presume the problem is fixed and put everything back together.
Now I just need a new supply of 15A fuses, and to grow some double-jointed arms, so I can unplug the stock ignition box and hook up the GM HEI module.
It's been raining already some, and with the shortage of salt during the last winter, there wasn't much used anyway, so the streets are ready for Z, albeit with an extra shirt or a jacket.

A month after putting Chevette springs on the front, I finally got around to installing them on the rears on the 260Z. I cut 3 coils from the springs for the front and 2.5 for the rear. I installed them with KYB Excel struts. Cornering is so much flatter than with the 40 year old springs. The tire rub on the left rear is gone. Compared to how it was, it feels like a slot car. Meanwhile, it still appears to have a stock stance.
Thank you to John Coffey, Phil, and all of the others here and at Hybridz for experimenting and posting the results. So far this appears to be a great cost-effective upgrade.

Went to my first car show of the year. Had a great day and nice weather for the Pittsburgh area. All was great until I got back from looking at the over 400 cars on Main street and the parking lots to discover that someone one had taken one of my new plastic fuse cover in the engine bay. So I ordered two new ones just in case. I have never had a problem or heard of any one having any problems at car shows.
I was the only early Z, one 370Z and only 12 foreign cars. I like shows where I am the only Z, lots of interest.

Went for a 3 hour ride today. Highway 101 South to Highway 92 West toward Half Moon Bay on the coast, without much traffic until close to Half Moon Bay.
South on Highway 1 with the ocean on our right to Highway 84 East. 84 is nice and twisty through the hills.
Turned North onto 280, then East on 380, to 101 South back home. Car ran great and cool, but temp gauge acted a bit strange.
We waved at nice looking 280Z going the opposite direction on Highway 84. Was than anybody from here? Sorry, no pics as I forgot my camera.

Washed and waxed the car.
Removed the leaking 3-qt accusump with a whole lot less mess than expected. Decided to repaint the passenger side floor while it was out. Tightened up the rest of the oil line connections and then safety wired the oil sender, oil pan plug, tranny fill and drain plugs along with the diff plugs.
Will reconnect accusump tomorrow but will need to wait for a better time to start the engine other than Mother's Day on a quiet street to verify there are no new oil leaks.

Checked and tighten the bolts after changing the diff a couple weeks ago. Everything looked good. Also took the rear bumper of and straighten the brackets (po got hit very light in passanger side before i bought the car). I got the car out and ready for this years events around the Burg about a 2 months a go and I started to hear a strange noise in the engine area. I could not pinpoint the exact location, so I purchase one of the mechanic stethoscope's and hunted and hunted. Still unable to find it. Was like a clicking noise every so often. Even my 89 year old mother said the car did not sound right.
Well the problem showed it's ugly head about 2 weeks ago with coolant leaking from some place in the front of the engine by the alternator. So from all the info I gleaned form this site I thought I would try a new water pump. So far the noise has stopped and it is not leaking at this point.
I purchased the pump (AISIN) from Rock Auto and new bolts form Motorsport Auto. All the bolts came out with no problems and the gasket was pretty easy to get off.
Attached is a picture of the new and old parts. I was wondering if the old water pump was original, it's a AMPCO. I don't remember it being changed when I had to replace the head gasket back in 1979/80 or when I had the car worked on back in 1999.
The old pump sounds and feels very rough when you spin it. Bad bearings.

Yesterday, on the way to do some work near LAX I saw this parked near the road.
So on the way back stopped at the "Proud Bird" and checked them out. I'd hoped the MIG was one of those that China sold for $150K back in the 90's, in flying condition with legal lights, etc. (shipping n.i.c.), but no. No engine etc., but still cool. When Col. Chuck Yeager tested the first one captured back in the fifties, he called it the best plane he ever flew. It out-flew the F-86 in almost every respect (according to an F-86 pilot I talked to), but the F-86 was the superior war machine due to it's guns, gunsights, pilot protection, and pilot training.
Also, that futuristic orange thing is the bell X-1, first supersonic plane, also piloted by Yeager. Also saw P-51's, WWI planes, etc.
Painted the right rear suspension piece, cleaned and waxed the Z,and attended a cruise-in.

Put a new 3 row brass and copper 280 radiator in my '72 240 and a full shroud. Radiator fit great just hangs lower because of the added transmission line cooler cavity. Dumb a## me didn't get all the parts before I started so I'll have to wait until Monday morning for the different shape lower hose, every chain store has the upper but no lowers. Beers are on me, literally.

I pulled off the intake and exhaust on the 260Z today.
After I pulled off the carburetors, I noticed this...
I knew I had an exhaust leak. I just didn't know the manifold was trying to snap in half.
I took my time and got the intake and exhaust taken off. The flash of the camera really emphasizes the magnitude of the leak.
After that I got the materials to make my redneck soda blasting cabinet. I'll let you guys know how it works out.

Wow, it looks like there was a fire or a bomb explosion.
I made on of those with your blower shoved inside clear tubing, it works but it uses ALOT of soda and a huge mess. My neighbors wouldn't even look at me for a few days, it covered everything. Can't wait to see what you come up with, it's gotta be better than mine.

I tried my hand at cleaning up the intake.
This is what it looked like before.
I cleaned it with degreaser and rinsed with denatured alcohol. (If I remember my chemistry correctly, the ethyl alcohol with mix well with any remaining water and help the water evaporate.)
Then I cleaned it with brake cleaner and a brass brush. I followed that with the redneck blasting cabinet and soda blasting. As Cliff mentioned, it takes a fair amount of baking soda, and it won't blast off too much.
I had to scrape off some of the excess grease with a razor scraper and picks. I followed that with some more brake cleaner and steel brush. Then finished with more blasting.
I use a brass wheel on the balance tube and blasted some of the other parts.
I rinsed all of the parts with water and sprayed again with denatured alcohol to remove the water quickly.

Cleaned and waxed the inner fender wells in the engine bay. Also started polishing the valve cover using a scorch brite pad. That didn't last long, the temperate here was 95.

Went to a car meet today. A guy in my age (34) started to ask me alot of questions about my 240z and then invites me to look at his car, a Ford GT he say. And Holy crap he realy got one. I had to put my ass in the drivers seat. The noise when you hit the throttle is the most angry engine/exhaust sound iv ever heard. Supercharged 950hp/1050nm. Would look great in my garage next to the Z

Raised the float bowls a little higher than stock a while back. Don't think it's overflowed since then but wanted to check. If all goes well (or wrong) a quick check of the Sriracha bottle will let me know if it has. Should still be plenty air for venting.
Had to swipe the bottle from the coolant overflow line though. If I eat enough burgers, should have another empty Sriracha bottle soon.
Pop'd on new side view mirrors on the 280z.
eBay; plastic; not quite a value buy; still looks decent. About a 15-30min job. At least I'm not worrying when my side view mirrors are gonna wobble out of sight. I did a full write up on my blog, DailyDatsun.com

1977 Datsun 280z, 4/77, 81k original miles. Been stored under a tree, just waiting for me.
Now a daily driver, see its progress at www.DailyDatsun.com
Removed the original, non-functioning A/C compressor, compressor mount and hoses from my neighbor's 240Z. Next step will be to get a new A/C kit and install it.

Actually two days ago, took the 240Z to a local car show at an excellent venue. Of 144 registered cars three were Japanese, mine, a very nicely restored '74 260Z and a very nice '74 Toyota Celica GT.
Here is a link to a youtube presentation posted by the event organizers, if you like history you will enjoy it. You will see me arriving at 3:59, there was a wide variety of vehicles.

I got the new 2.5" exhaust run to the headers today. Now the 260Z runs smooth and has no complaints pulling north of 5,000 RPM (on a ZX distributor). Next come the new needles for the SUs.

Cleaned on a spare valve cover with 1000 grit sandpaper for about 3.5 hrs. Going to try 1500 grit next then go back with the scorch brite pad. Also sanded and polished on two taillights on my 93 chevy Z-71. They look brand new. Don't see why this wouldn't work on some Z taillights.

I displayed my car today at Burlingame's "Cars in the Park", along side my neighbors 240Z. _ Our 240Z's got lots of attention and compliments. _ It was a great time, though there were fewer cars on the field this year, about 235.
Also displayed was a 2004 Ford GT 40 in Gulf Oil color scheme, a Lamborghini, a sweet BRG XKE and a very nice convertible Karman-Gia.
The rest of the field was mostly american pre-war classics, various corvettes, including two 1963 split window coupes, lot's of 60's Novas, Mopar muscle, custom cars and hot rods. _ Chrome abounded everywhere you looked.
My 72' 240Z won a small "sponsor's choice" award plaque. That's the third time in 3 years... _ Not too bad considering all the small nicks in the paint and windshield from being driven. Even had a couple people inquire about my selling it. _ There was another, fairly original looking, 1971 Series 1 240Z at the show. _ A pristine, limited edition, "cream-sickle" 914 got the best foreign car award.
